The problem with Merle luring the zombies back to camp is his brother might have been there. He didnt know the brother left to go to Atlanta.

Wait...if Merle saw the van, couldn't he have deduced that at the very least, his brother was out looking for him? If so, then why didn't he wait by the van?

Don't forget that everyone was converging on Atlanta because it was supposed to be safe there, so the pool of zombies isn't the people who lived in Atlanta pre-zombification -- it's those people, plus whatever other people from the southeast made it to Atlanta before things went to hell.

Finally caught this episode last night and was underwhelmed. Didn't really care for the near "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral" scene only to have them become near BFFs. Here's hoping the final 3 episodes improve a bit.

Anyway, who cares about the minor plot points. I am totally enjoying this show.

I wouldn't see how Merle would know what the van looked like as he was on the roof even when they came up with the plan. Unless he was somewhere that he was able to see them come back. Especially since it seemed like it was the first time a group went.

While Merle might have wanted revenge, it would have been against Rick & the black guy. Neither were at the camp.
I think it was just chance that the zombies found the camp. Its like they were walking that direction & just found them. The fire light/smell of food being cooked or noises (car alarm the previous day) from the camp might have sent them in that direction.

It's not enough of a stretch that he'd find the fan that I'd call it a plot hole. I suppose they could have shown him hitting the train tracks and finding it to lessen the coincidence feeling, but I think they were letting the audience find out things at the same time the characters were.
My only real issue with the episode was the directing... they should have cut out about half a second of footage before each zombie bite; it looked too much like people were sticking out limbs to get eaten.

I didn't put the zombies showing up and the van together until I saw this thread. How can Merle drive the van to the camp, unleash the zombies without the campers knowing it? they were just chatting around the fire so I assumed they could have heard the van driving up close... since this is in the comic, I guess I shouldn't think too much about it

One handed Merle did all of that? C'mon, people... unless he strapped a chainsaw to his hand Ash-style.

Zombies attacking the camp is in the comic, Merle (and everyone attached to him) was not in the comic. All Merle had to do was get to camp, disarm the tin-can alarm system and get the attention of a few straggling zombies.
If it is anything like the comics, the zombies will march in the direction they last saw movement until they find something to eat or until they're forced to walk around something (they'll also follow each other). All he needed to do is wave his arms and run in the direction of camp two miles away and they'd follow in that direction like those little mechanical dog toys.
But that's just a guess. I suspect the next episode intro will be a breakdown of the events as the piece together what exactly happened. Since we only know what our characters know, I'm sure we are missing several key pieces to the puzzle.

According to EW the show's first season (all six episodes) was filmed last summer. So whatever you see in TV wasn't influenced by comments from viewers or the press.
A couple of spoilers about things that WON'T happen in the last two episodes:

I'd rather see Morgan and his son again than Merle. I hope Darabont finds a way to write Morgan back into the show in season 2.

I read an interview with Darabont where the talked about adapting the comic to the screen and one thing he mentioned that I didn't like was basically "In TV you can't kill off the characters as easily." It makes sense, but it's really too bad because one of the comic's greatest strengths was the number of characters they developed and then just mercilessly killed off, seemingly at random. It really sold the violent, chaotic nature of the world they found themselves in.

Anyone know why'd that be?

I did find this interview Q/A with Kirkman. It's not the one I'm thinking of though.
There must be a big difference for you between killing someone in a comic book and killing someone on TV, because you’re essentially ending an actor’s involvement with the show. Is that a tough thing to do?
Screw those people! No, in all seriousness, it’s something that’s very difficult for me. Because it is lines on paper when I do it in the comic book series. It’s like, “Oh, okay, Charlie [Adlard, Walking Dead illustrator] doesn’t have to draw that arrangement of lines anymore, that person is dead.” But it’s very uncomfortable for me to be on set, because I see these actors that are there and, in the source material, I have killed all but two of them. I walk through the set and I’m like, “Yep, killed that one, killed that one, killed that one.” And it is firing those people. I feel really bad for Emma Bell, just because she was great and I would have liked to have had her in the show. But, you know, this is the Walking Dead, characters have got to die. Thankfully, Emma was brought onto the show with the understanding that she was only going to be in a certain number of episodes and she knew that she was going to die from the very beginning. But it doesn’t really make it any easier. When they were shooting those scenes, I had to fly to Comic-Con and so I wasn’t actually there for when she died. But it was very emotional on set and I know that she was very upset about having to leave the crew and the actors. You kind of become a family when you’re doing a TV show and it’s a little upsetting to have to get rid of somebody.

I can sum up my problem with the show and its writing in one word. "No naked zombie chicks"
NO one got turned while they were in the process of changing? No cheerleaders, sorority girls, hot cops, strippers, or nurses? No girls dressed slutty for Halloween or their ilk, with hot zombie boobies that are not quite rotting yet?
come on writer dudes. this is just sloppy exposition.
