Re: Lost -- "Across the Sea" -- 05/11/10
Here's another thought. The women claimed that she made 'it so they couldnt kill each other'. These are her rules, IMO. Later, we hear the MiB tell Jacob he can change the game "when he makes his own rules". Jacob takes over the women's job protecting the island. Perhaps the person in charge of the island is the one making the rules?
Consider Ben and Widmore in S4:
Are you here to kill me Benjamin? - Charles
You and I both know I can't do that. - Ben
Ben and Widmore know SOMETHING that they have been keeping to themselves IMO.

I'd really like to know what some people were expecting. It's been established that Jacob/the other guy have been on the island a long time, and that they are the center of something larger than they are.
It's been established that the Island seems to use people and discard them when it's done with them. There have been metaphysical phenomena on the island from the very first episode.
Introducing the light thing is the only real cop-out I see, and by the end, it may make more sense than it does now. Did anyone really expect that a show that features a smoke monster was going to have a tidy, all inclusive explanation of every little detail and it would make perfect sense and be totally plausible in the real world?
I do agree that this wasn't the best episode ever, but I don't think it took a giant shit on the entire series either. I think a lot of this would have gone over better if they had flashbacked to this storyline throughout the season and hit us with LAX tonight.
But I still like the Battlestar Galactica finale, so what do I know?

I did enjoy the kid that played MiB. He had some truly unique expressions. Also some of the MiB's expressions and mannerisms reminded me a lot of Gregory Itzen (Charles Logan, 24).
I was thinking the same thing. The music was it's own character in this episode. The annoying neighbor that just won't go away. That's what I thought at first. "Adam & Eve" are the remains of Jacob's family. They're long gone. So if Smokey is only wearing the form of Jacob's brother, then any sympathy this episode created for Jacob's brother wouldn't necessarily carry over to Smokey. But then again, MiB/Smokey has demonstrated qualities (wanting to go home) that can now be attributed to Jacob's brother. So Smokey still has to have some remnants of Jacob's brother in him. Right?
MiB (his soul?) was released in the cave and he was reborn as Smokey. That's the best I can make of it. Like Fmom said, you don't die but something much worse. Not to mention she mentioned 'rebirth' when describing what the cave is.
No shit. I can't recall a single post theorizing that. We should have seen that coming a mile away.

This might be the whiskey talking, but I think this episode may have convinced me to never again watch a television show until it's ended. I've watched seasons 1, 2 and 4 three times each. I've watched seasons 3 & 5 twice. I'll finish this season. That comes to approximately 174 hours, or 7.26 days, spent watching Lost. At present, that means I've spent .06% of my life on this, a show about a bunch of people stuck on an island because a crazy magic lady stole twin babies who got supernatural powers from one of them drinking an elixir and then throwing his brother into Marcellus Wallace's soul. What. The. Fuck.
Aaaahahahhahahhahhahahaha.

Perhaps they're both her replacements? She obviously wasn't pure like Jacob and killed with ease like MiB and had the smoke powers (maybe?)

The episode was poorly placed at the end of the season. After six seasons I should want to see the show complete the losties character arcs. Instead, I want to see the poor MiB kill everyone and go home!

"Answers" that actually include answers? You bet, particularly when that's what they've been insisting they're going to give us. Questions like who built the statue and the lighthouse and for what specific purpose are absolutely ones we can reasonably expect will be answered by any competent writer who actually does have a plan.

I was reading some of the comments on Lostpedia and someone mentioned that in the Adam and Eve episode that Jack thought the corpses were about 50 years old. So I guess he was WAY off on his projection.

During S1, Darlton stated that the corpses "were the slowly decomposing evidence that there were going to do this all along".

Did Mom say in this episode that MIB can't leave the island? If she did, then we still don't know 100% why, right? I thought the reason we assume is MIB leaving would destroy life. It would have been nice if they gave us some reason in this episode.
I remember her saying he was special. She never said that to Jacob, but we know he had powers too. Curious why she only told MIB that.

My first thought was that it was just a bit dull, but after reading some online discussions and recaps, I think I enjoyed it more, think it has really explained how the island and MIB work.

She also told Jacob he 'really didnt have a choice' about drinking the kool-aid and taking charge of the island, protecting it from evil humans. The Jacob we know from the future is all about people making choices on their own and bringing people to the island. Big difference in attitudes.

The really insulting thing about Adam and Eve is that they're expecting us to buy that as evidence that they're executing a plan when Adam and Eve were the first couple from which life springs forth. Their "Adam and Eve" are clearly not that. A finer example of Orwellian tactics in entertainment I am hard pressed to find.

I hate saying it, but I thought this episode was kind of disappointing as well. It was far from perfect. However, I did enjoy it and I think it's a lot better than many people are saying. But it was also frustrating, and I couldn't stand some of the answers and also the lack thereof. The Adam and Eve reveal was fine but there was a lot of other stuff bugging me from this episode. I think this may be the first time since the S4 finale (which I now hold in high regard) that I've complained about a Damon and Carlton penned episode.
