I wish you guys would start using spoilers when discussing all this Christianity stuff. I still haven't finished the Bible.

this shit is more mythology than religion
i was watching the OG Clash of the Titans yesterday, and i'm pretty sure LOST has *borrowed* some elements from it
think i know where they are going w/ the story Jacob/MIB wise

The part that bothered me the most this episode was the scene where Richard couldn't reach the nail. If he was able to get that close to it with his face, all he had to do was turn around and get it with his feet. I was yelling at the screen, but I don't speak Spanish so he probably didn't understand.
Other than that it was one of my favorite episodes yet.

And yes, still one of the top episodes.

I was thinking more about the third "smoke monster" at work today... who I theorized may be appearing as Christian on the island and was living in the cabin. I scratch my theory of the "holy trinity" of the island. We have an apparent representation of God on the island, an apparent representation of the Devil on the island, so what third party does that leave? Some kind of Antichrist figure. (And, no, the devil and the Antichrist are not the same in the Bible.) Just throwing the idea out there to see what you all think about it.

I don't think it's perfectly clear at all. Supposedly, the MIB is trapped on the island. Yet Christian has made appearances off of the island. Once on the freighter to Michael and another to Jack in the hospital.
Plus, Claire made a clear distinction between her father (Christian) and her friend (MIB).

I don't think Hurley can actually see the dead people. He can see Jacob in the same way he saw Charlie and others which suggests to me that he can see the physical manifestations of these island spirit whatever they ares when others cannot. Jacob appeared to be stuck in one form, MIB can take on the form of somebody who dies and is brought back to the island and appears to be stuck in that form until a new dead person is brought back to the island, and this supposed third smoke monster can appear as people he pulls from the memories of people who come to the island. And, for whatever reason, MIB is trapped and Jacob and the Christian smoke monster entity can get off the island.

Jacob crashed the plane? I thought it was because Desmond didn't push the button.
If Jacob did it, why did the creators go to all the trouble of showing how important the button pressing was? Couldn't they have just introduced Jacob/MIB to us earlier?
And Jacob/MIB caused a tsunami to bring the Black Rock? I didn't get that at all, that they have the power to control those kinds of forces. If they are that powerful, couldn't they have caused a storm or tornado to bring the plane down? Why the theatrics with the hatch, Desmond, the numbers, etc?
Of course, the real reason is probably that Jacob/MIB didn't really exist as these characters until last season, so any "influence" they have on the show is merely a big retcon. After all, you don't have to actually SEE Jacob/MIB to see their influences, so it's pretty easy to just shoehorn them in to every major moment in LOST since the pilot.

Here is one thing I don't understand about the button pushing hatch... I don't know if this has been covered before or if somebody could just summarize an explanation...
So we learned the island is the cork. I take it that the "evil" is the electomagnetic energy that they tapped into in 1977. They seal it off but have to build the hatch with the button to control the energy. Desmond doesn't hit the button one time and the plane crashes and when Locke refuses to hit it at all it destroys the hatch. Apparently the seal is broken...so was the "bottle broken" at that point? And if it wasn't and MIB has a plan to break the "bottle" then how did the energy get sealed back up to the point that no button had to be constructed again and pushed?

I don't think it's retconning or shoehorning. The story is not done being told. It's one thing to finish the series and then go back and make everything fit, but until it's finished, and as long as they can justify how it develops, it's perfectly fine. If you look at the themes of the show they have been incredibly consistent from episode 1.
You really just have to look at King's The Stand for a template. That's a book that became more and more supernatural as it developed. So has Lost.
Now if Lost it hasn't developed the way you wanted, that's something else, and no one can really argue that. Which is fine, you don't have to like the show, but that doesn't make it bad.

Yep probably right.
