So he shot someone outside of the gate. They told us of the incident rather than show us. Honestly, if this is a mystery to you I don't see how you're ever going to be happy with the finale.

Re: LOST -- "What Kate Does" -- 02.09.2010
As of right now, the earliest we've seen the physical Smoke Monster on screen is in 1988 when the French team is attacked at The Temple. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't believe we ever saw the Smoke Monster at all during 1974-1977. I'm sure it's been around for a long time (as suggested by its hieroglyphs) but maybe it was dormant and then woken up and supercharged by the electromagnetic energy released from the Incident in 1977 hence the lightning and electrical sparks that we see within the smoke.
Maybe the ultimate goal is to get the Monster back into dormancy and only the Losties can do that since they were also ultimately brought there by the Incident but didn't prevent it from happening. This is why they need to be protected so they can changed the past. Only they have the knowledge of this info to stop the Incident.
If they stop the Incident and the bomb from being dropped then the timeline is fixed and they never crash and the Monster is dormant. The End...but it's open for a future story if someone unleashes the Monster again.
Like through Ben's backdoor toilet plug. If that was put there before 1977 (which I'm guessing it was) then anyone who knows it's there or happens upon it and opens it could unleash the Monster again.

One last thing about the Monster. I've always wondered what that ratcheting sound was. When I see the Incident footage and all the metallic objects flying down the shaft including the chain that gets wrapped up in Juliet and the crane I can't help but think that's the noise we're hearing each time the Monster attacks. Basically, all the things that made it what it is fused together with electromagnetism.

The idea that the incident unleashed the monster by allowing an overload of electromagnetic energy is an interesting one. I think that the smoke monster allowed Ben to believe that he had some control of it, summoning it, to at least make him feel somewhat comfortable of it. If this were not the case there is no way in hell he goes down into the underground temple surroundings to be judged by it. I would rather swim back to the real world than face that.

Speaking of the monster... didn't it appear to Ben back in the 1970s when he was a child in the form of his mother? That would have been before "The Incident" and she was presumably properly buried, so that would seem to quash two theories -- that the monster wasn't around in the early DHARMA period and that it can only take the form of unburied dead.
Unless that wasn't the monster, or the writers have changed their master plan since then.

I still think the Monster was around way before 1977. Thousands of years before. The Incident just changed its DNA. The drill was like sticking a fist into a hornet's nest and waking it up.

He was in the premiere talking to Sun wondering what Richard and Ilana were talking about, and then when Smokey Locke comes out and walks by he said "I'm seeing it but I'm not believing it." Wasn't in this episode because they didn't show that side of the island.

Sorry dude. There's a HUGE difference between "a little mystery" and Lost. They havent really answered anything and are creating even more mysteries. People can want to have some questions answered and at the same time NOT want to be "spoon-fed" everything.

Same here. Some people, I guess, just love to
We get it: you want "answers". Here's a thought: let the rest of the season play out, and if after the finale you're still not happy I'm sure there will be a thread for that. Until then, relax and enjoy the ride.

If you were to look at what we knew from the first season, to these past episodes, they've answered a lot of questions. They have brought new questions to light, but that's how things work in real life too.
And there will be plenty of people unsatisfied with the ending, but with a show this deep in mythology and characters it has to dissatisfy people. There are too many ideas floating around in every viewer's head to meet expectations.
As long as the writers do what they want to do and explain the biggest things, and bring arcs to a reasonable conclusion, I will be happy. But I don't want to have every answer. Speculation is a great component of Lost, and for that series to remain interesting for years to come, some mysteries need to exist.

I get it -- let it play out -- and I plan to do that. I'm just hoping to not to be led down the blind path that Sopranos did where the screen turns black and you're left to figure it out for yourself.

I think they'll give us better then that but again I'm not one that needs everything laid out and tied up in a nice neat bow.

But I like your theory as well. I really kind of expected for last season's finale to end with Smokey being released after the Incident.

But we'll have the answer to that mystery tomorrow. Unlike Lost that only answer questions with more questions. I wonder if they'll answer the question tomorrow. I like answers to questions. Answers are heroes, questions are zeroes. Questions? Answers. What was that? Answer
