I believe he was the last living member of the Bonanza cast. I mostly remember him from the Trapper John, M.D. series though.

I just found out about this today. That's too bad. Bonanza really went downhill after he left (it wasn't bad, but it just wasn't as good as when he was on the show).

One by one all the actors I grew up watching are dying off. That's a shame.

Wow. Bonanza is now officially extinct. This makes me think of a comedy bit I heard on the radio a few years back where there were "advertising" a Bonanza reunion, and it was basically just Pernell walking in going, "Pa? Hoss? Little Joe? Helloooooo!"

Sadly another actor who I thought had passed away a couple decades ago.

Yeah, he plays twins on All My Children. Really good characters.
I really liked Trapper John MD and watched it regularly. RIP.

How did the series explain why he left?
And was he ever mentioned any later episodes like what he was doing?
Did the producers ever try to bring him back?

Trapper John was the last show I would watch before going to bed on Sunday nights when I was a kid. RIP.

Roberts originally planned to leave at the end of the fifth season. They introduced two new characters at the same time. A female character was introduced for Roberts to fall in love with, marry, and move away. This was about a half dozen episodes from the end of the season. At the same time they introduced his replacement, Will Cartwright played by Guy Williams(Zorro/Lost In Space). He was a cousin or something. Roberts changed his mind and decided to stay on for the sixth season so there is a 5-6 episode storyline at end of fifth season with a love triangle. Nobody knows if the woman will choose Adam or Will. In the last Will Cartwright episode she chooses Will and they go off together and the show continues as before with Adam for one more season.
The remaining seasons would have been better if he had left after the fifth season and Williams was around as Will for the remaider of the show's run. But then we never would of had Williams as John Robinson on Lost in Space, which premiered the same year as Bonanza's sixth, which would have been the first with Will Cartwright.
