I don't think this is any shock if you follow the ratings on a regular basis. It's held it's own and actually increased in viewership as the season has gone along. Glad to hear the news.

I wonder if sales of Heat Wave had any influence on this decision.

I just hope that the odd rumors about Fillion and Katic actually disliking each other are just that, because it would be tragic to let on-set bull affect the series. Of course that's something we'll likely never really know the truth about. This is what I call my "have a great time" show, because that's exactly what happens when it's on. It's an all-around great show.

I tried to get the book from my library and it's not there. Apparently if you want it from Amazon there is a wait, so it must be popular.

I would consider him a major part of Two Guys and a Girl and that got renewed twice after they added him to the cast.

Great news on Castle, though.

Wow, so even in its second season it was on probation? ABC is a trip with all of this half season crap.

Re: Castle gets a full season pickup! Woo hoo!

Castle got another book deal for 3 more books in the series so maybe we can get at least 3 more years. A guy can dream.

Nearly ever show works on 13 episode seasons (back 9 ordered later) until
Season 4. This is very true for atleast the first two
seasons the third depends on the network/studio.

This is still more recent isn't it (say since 2004 and later)? Or maybe I can attribute it to my not keeping up with tv news back then. Networks are so quick to pull the trigger nowadays.

I think it's something that's been standard for probably decades, although most people didn't notice or care, and it seems a fairly rare occurrence to be canceled mid-second season.

However, Get a Life only had a 13 episode 2nd season after a full first season, back in 1990:

I'm racking my brain trying to think of a show that had an abbreviated 3rd season due to cancellation, with no luck.

Does Arrested Development count? FOX cut their second season short to 18 episodes then canceled the show making them wrap season 3 at 13.

Anybody know who actually wrote the Heat Wave book?

Nobody knows for sure. However, speculation is that it's crime novelist Stephen J. Cannell, who has appeared on the show a few times as Castle's poker buddy, is friends with Nathan Fillion, and has also written for TV in the past.

I'd count a 13 episode season 3 as a mid-season cancellation.
