The HISTORY Channel is officially not airing ANYTHING good...

I use to watch History all the time: Digging for the Truth, Histories Mysteries, Battles BC, Cities of the Underworld, Monsterquest, etc. I was always recording something and watching something. I noticed the other day that this is the first time theyre not airing anything good. Lat thing I saw was WWII HD, but that wasnt a series.

I dont care for shit like Axemen, Pawn Stars (are you fucking kidding me?), Modern Marvels, nothing.... this is truly sad.

I hated Pawn Stars at first but they ran a marathon around Christmastime and I got kind of hooked. It's not like they show crap on the show. I like a lot of the really old antiques brought in with the back stories.

Unfortunately the History Channel is a shell of its former self but they do show some good historical stuff on there. I've seen a lot of good specials in the past couple of months about Hitler & WWII, Lincoln, and some neat special on Presidential face masks. Good stuff.

Battles BC and Monsterquest were pop culture schlock.

Ax Men is a guilty pleasure...though Swamp Loggers is my favorite logging reality show (and how fucked up is TV now that there is a logging reality sub-genre?).

I always hated when History got on their Nostradamus "end of the world" kicks. I've heard they've been doing the "Mayan 2012" thing to death.

History International & Science Channel usually had better stuff on them. Discovery Health Channel was a blast to watch at night, they had almost always had some shows covering some of the rarer genetic disorders/weirder things to human body does.

Yeah... History Channel is weird. About fifteen years ago it was basically the Hitler Channel.

Then they started doing all of this stuff about conspiracies (probably from the DaVinci Code), UFOs. Loch Ness, Bigfoot, and Nostradamus.

Now it's like lumberjacks, truckers, and pawn shops. It's like the White Trash Channel.

(I do like Universe, and Amy Mainzer is fucking hot in a scientist kind of way.)

I'm with you. I couldn't stand the History Channel like 12 years ago because it was the hitler channel, 90% of their stuff was about hitler and WWII which is cool but the channel's name is History not the WWII History Channel. Once they started getting History International there was a bit more diversity with the 2 channels but now is as bad as any other. They should show repeats of History Detectives from PBS which is a show I love. I just wished they showed a bit more of the research process.

Clash of the Gods has to be the best series ever. I hope they have a second season.

That's because it was "Armageddon Week" recently. Seemingly non-stop 2012/Nostradamus/end of days kind of stuff, most of which yakked about the same vague notions while bad re-enactments abounded. There was a good one - the name escapes me - that used comic book artwork to tell about Earth in the future. I enjoyed that one.

I just can't watch anything "live" on that channel - it's DVR or nothing. Too many loooong commercial breaks.

Sadly, this isn't the first channel to be a shadow of its former self (TLC springs to mind along, of course, with MTV and VH1, I could go on...)

However, I really enjoy The Universe but I'll watch any channel doing anything on that topic as it interests me to no end.

I kind of enjoy Ax Men. Sure, it's not terribly intellectually stimulating, but I do find it interesting. It's also really entertaining in a guilty pleasure way, especially the segments that feature that "S&S Aqua Logging" father and son team. Those two are so fucking hapless that I can't wait to see how they will fuck something up next, and the old man yelling and getting all worked up over every little thing is quite comical.

People have different opinions on what is good or not.

Usually the arguement is people hate that History channel has programs that have nothing to do with history..but then I don't think that is what you are upset with.

Time after People is actually fairly interesting if you really want to see what kind of effect we've had on the planet. The one last night about Toxins was highly informative.

I wish they'd run more about pre-1939 stuff. I believe it was the military channel that had an excellent series about WWI. They also need to run more on the Reconstruction and Prohibition periods. It feels like they go from 1776 to Lincoln and then skip past everything until Hitler.

You're telling me.

One time I was up really late/early (depends on your view) and History Channel (I think) ran an entire program on Teddy Roosevelt with *no* commercial breaks. It was only 45 min long, but it was awesome to not have to sit through 750 "Video Professor" commercials.

BBC America has better shows in this vein. There's Bargain Hunt where contestants are given a hundred pounds and set loose at a flea market. The stuff they buy is then placed in an auction, and if they turn a profit they can keep the money. Nobody ever wins. Then there's Cash in the Attic, where people who need some money invite appraisers into their homes to find collectibles that can go on auction.

Here's why they switched.

History had its best ratings in 2009, averaging 1.18 million viewers in prime time (3 percent higher than the record viewership of 2008).

History Channel Article

Pawn Stars ratings
History Channel's
premiere of the second season of the "Pawn Stars" TV show up against the second hour of Raw averaged 3.5 million viewers. It was a record for the History Channel.

I like History just fine. It's not a destination channel, but they have enough stuff on that is interesting to me. I do think that, overall, the Science channel is a better place to go, but even they're getting bitten by the "extreme show" bug.
