Re: Report: NBC to Cancel LENO?
Saw it coming from a mile away. It's a shame that Conan is getting the boot but it's probably best for NBC. I hope Fox or whomever picks Conan up and he succeeds. I only watch Craig Ferguson but I liked Conan the best before I discovered Craig. His writer's strike episodes were fantastic. Wasn't a huge fan of the post-writer's strike episodes... made me realize how much his writer's were holding him back. I was severely disappointed he stuck with them for the Tonight Show... just awful.
BTW - I can't remember the 10PM shows last year other than SVU and ER (final season) that did better than Leno in the ratings. Help me out here...

I can almost hear Leno spinning it right now... "my show and humor was just too edgy for 10pm"

This better not be true. If so, I hope Conan goes to a competing network and fucks NBC right in the ass. He's been as loyal as it comes and now he's getting screwed.

Jay Leno fans, you can breathe again - those reports about NBC pulling the late-night mainstay from their lineup aren't accurate, an NBC spokeswoman said in a statement.
"Jay Leno is one of the most compelling entertainers in the world today," NBC representative Rebecca Marks said. "As we have said all along, Jay's show has performed exactly as we anticipated on the network."
But, Marks added, the show has represented some issues for NBC's affiliates - issues she declined to comment on.
However, "both Jay and the show are committed to working closely with them to find ways to improve the performance."
This statement came after FTVLive.com posted a story about NBC possibly pulling Leno because of low ratings, a fear that has hovered over the show ever since he was moved to the 10 p.m. slot in September.
The show was a risk for NBC because it put a talk show up against scripted prime-time shows, and also ran it five days a week. Since the beginning, Leno has been open about the low ratings expectations, noting the network's poor performance.
"NBC's in fourth place," Leno told CNN in September. "You can't do any worse."
But according to Adweek, Leno has indeed stayed on par with ratings expectations.
"Leno is performing at about the ratings NBC sold it," the industry trade reported, "so there were no overblown expectations."

That is exactly the same statement that was issued earlier today. It neither confirms or denys anything.

he didn't drive it into the ground. Leno got strong ratings in the beginning because NBC was a powerhouse network. most people don't switch to the other guy after they've watched it for so long. Conan came into a cluster fuck of a situation.

Oh, I don't believe he did either. But that's the spin that's going to come out of this, because NBC can't come out and say that they made a stupid decision that hurt their affiliates.

What I highlighted in red will be the main reason that they move Leno back to 11:30 pm.

NBC says committed to improving Leno performance
By Sue Zeidler and Steve Gorman

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – General Electric Co's NBC Universal said on Thursday it would try to improve the performance of Jay Leno's prime-time show after an Internet report said the network was planning to yank the program.
"Jay Leno is one of the most compelling entertainers in the world today. As we have said all along, Jay's show has performed exactly as we anticipated on the network," NBC Universal said in response to the report on website FTVLive.
FTVLive said NBC was going to pull the plug on "The Jay Leno Show," which has drawn lackluster ratings and upset local affiliates since it debuted in September following the network's controversial decision to move Leno to prime time.
Celebrity news website TMZ.com reported separately that NBC was planning to move Leno back to his 11:30 p.m. late-night slot, possibly splitting the hour with his successor Conan O'Brien or entirely replacing O'Brien.
Privately, NBC executives denied the reports. The network in a statement admitted there have been challenges but said it was working to shore up the beleaguered host's performance.
"It has, however, presented some issues for our affiliates. Both Jay and the show are committed to working closely with them to find ways to improve the performance," NBC said.
Leno has averaged a little over 5 million viewers in the 10 p.m. slot nightly, compared with the 6.8 million viewers for that slot before his move, according to Nielsen.
NBC has said the show was a commercial success because its ratings, though lower, are in line with what advertisers were promised and the show is cheaper to make than scripted dramas.
But it has hurt NBC's affiliates, whose local newscasts had counted on a bigger "lead-in" audience before the switch.
NBC's overhaul has had major ratings consequences for the network as well. It lost its No. 1 ranking at the 11:30 p.m. hour as Leno's longtime rival, David Letterman on CBS Corp's CBS, beat out his new late-night competitor O'Brien in ratings.
Letterman's show has gone from trailing his NBC competition by 20 percent in the fourth quarter of 2008, to commanding a 65 percent lead in the fourth quarter 2009.
Nevertheless, Robert Thompson, professor of pop culture at Syracuse University, said he'd be surprised if NBC threw in the towel so fast. "They'd have to find five hours of prime-time programing. It's not like they have that stuff sitting around on the bench," he said.
Thompson noted that while the Leno show may not pan out, the idea of running a prime-time show five days a week seemed viable.
"It's less expensive, and when you do have a hit, you get one five days week," he said.

Also from NBC:
We have the best comedy team in the business. We remain committed to keeping Conan O'Brien on NBC. He is a valued part of our late-night lineup, as he has been for more than 16 years, and is one of the most respected entertainers on television."

I loved Leno when he hosted the tonight show, but I think it would be awkward to move him back to 11:30. I think it would of been better to give Leno a hour show once a week, and make it just a weekly show. I still like Leno, bu the Leno show is boring, awkward, chessey.

11:35 - Leno
12:05 - Conan
1:05 - Fallon
Can the Leno interviews and bring back the masturbating bear... Win/win for all.

wonder how that is going to work here in AZ. Leno starts at 9pm, followed by 30 mins of news, Conan then more news, then Fallon.

I love the "work closely with affiliates" garbage. What are they going to work on? Making a show people want to watch? This has nothing to do with the affiliates and they know it.

Re: Report: NBC to Cancel LENO?
This is what NBC apparently has available to fill the 5 hours of timeslots available for the rest of this season as was posted by someone on The Hollywood Reporter:
() Number of episodes
· BREAKTHROUGH WITH TONY ROBBINS (8)
· DAY ONE (4)
· LOSING IT WITH JILLIAN (8)
· PERFECT 10 (8)
· PERSONS UNKNOWN (13)
· UNITED PLATES OF AMERICA
· WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? (6)
There is also Friday Night Lights 4th season with 13 episodes as well. But, that isn't a 10pm show so something would need to be bumped to 10pm so FNL could take an 8 or 9pm timeslot.

Re: Report: NBC to Cancel LENO?
I just don't get this. How on Earth is this going to help anything?
I think the only prayer at getting anything out of Leno would be converting his show into a weekly 3-hour variety show on Fridays.

Re: Report: NBC to Cancel LENO?
NY TIMES has the following on its website:
Pressed by affiliates and shrinking ratings, NBC has a plan in the works to radically alter its late-night television lineup, restoring Jay Leno to his old spot at 11:35 each weeknight, while pushing the man who replaced him, Conan O’Brien, to a starting time of 12:05 a.m.
NBC executives held extensive discussions with both Mr. Leno and Mr. O’Brien Thursday about the future of the network’s late-night lineup.
And while NBC officially said no final decision on the plan has been made, two senior NBC executives who have talked to NBC’s top management about the moves said that under the plan being discussed Mr. Leno would definitely shift back to 11:35 but in a half-hour format, while Mr. O’Brien would slide back his start time by a half hour and then produce an hour-long show.
And what, exactly, do they think they're going to dump into the 10PM slots???

Day One, Persons Unknown and Friday Night Lights are the only ones that are scripted...the rest are reality shows.
