They fear him. It's the Sarah Pahlin factor. They know what Jay can do at the 11:35 timeslot. So they are all making fun of him and trying to make him look like the bad guy. Where as Pahlin they attacked her be making fun of her and saying she is stupid. It comes from that playbook of make your oppenet look bad by telling the public that he is. Doesn't matter if not true.

I agree with something wm lopez posted

Re: Report: NBC to Cancel LENO?
I don't see why everyone is hating Jay for all this. All he's done is agree to move to the 11:30pm slot with his show being cut down in half its time. He hasn't agreed to take over The Tonight Show or anything yet. If he does, then he deserves the hate.
NBC is the one to blame for this mess. At the same time, Conan is whining like a little girl about this. Throughout the history of TV, countless shows have been moved to different timeslots. Did the cast members, writers, etc whine and complain as much as Conan has? They accepted it because it was the network's decision. Conan is whining about getting moved to around 12AM. So what? He still has his show, and it wasn't in his contract that his show would be at a specified time. Do what countless of other employees in TV programs have done, and obey your boss.
How is this any different than any other show that has moved to a different timeslot?

Isn't the big difference here versus Letterman-Leno that Letterman was seen as a bit of a dick himself, so some people actually saw what happened as him getting his comeuppance and the nice guy winning? Conan doesn't really have a reputation as being mean, an asshole, a dick, whatever.

I can understand people not liking Leno's show, but I really don't understand why Jay is being blamed by anyone for this mess.
Like him or not, he was still the reigning king of late night when he left. He lost none of his viewers in the move to 10, and delivered EXACTLY what NBC said he would deliver. Again, NBC made this mess, not Leno.

Dude, Conan wasn't even given a chance on "The Tonight Show". Both Jay and Conan had so so ratings when they took over their respective shows. Jay didn't beat Letterman until Hugh Grant's interview after the Prostitution arrest. Granted, he stayed ahead of Letterman from that point on. But still, it didn't help that Leno's show was seemingly draggin' everyone's rating down that followed him including Conan's. Add Jay's shit show plus being the "new guy" on TTS and it really looks like Conan was fighting an uphill battle.
"king of late night" or not, Jay laid a big turd in the 10p slot. It didn't even feel like Jay or anyone on the show tried anything truly new or good. They just tried to rehash TTS's shit.
Fail because you tried to do something great, not because you gave a half-assed effort.

why the fuck would Kimmel go on Leno's show for anything other than an obvious grab for ratings?

It's also that Leno was himself the recipient of far more patience in the face of terrible ratings at a much stronger time in NBC's history. He had it easier than Conan does, yet they stuck with him a lot longer before his show was in any sense successful.

Jay's counter-letter:

(should make this clear that it isn't real)

The start time was 11:15 pm ET. Affiliates local news at that time ran 15 minutes.
In 1966, when 75% of the affiliates had expanded their late local news broadcast to 30 minutes, The Tonight Show moved its official start time to 11:30 pm ET.
In 1991, The Tonight Show moved its start time back by 5 minutes to 11:35 pm ET to accommodate the request by affiliates to lengthen their late local news broadcast to 35 minutes.
It is 2009. For 55 years, The Tonight Show has been the program that NBC broadcasts, five nights a week, immediately after its affiliates late local news shows.
You can decide for yourself if NBC changing the timeslot of The Tonight Show is different from any other timeslot changes that a network has made.

I haven't seen Leno consistently in ages, but holy shit did Kimmel have Leno's horrible jokes and verbal ticks down pat. I'm watching Leno and every time he says "did you hear about this" before he says what the hell he's talking about it cracks me up.

Re: Report: NBC to Cancel LENO?
I love Conan but the reality is he has tanked in the ratings.
Before anyone brings up that his numbers are better in the 18 to 49 demographic take another look at the numbers. Leno as host of the Tonight Show was out performing Conan in that demographic also.
Now someone is going to bring up his lead in as the reason. Conan was on for three months before Leno’s show started at 10pm. Was Conan beating Lettermen then?
How about the “he needed more time” excuse? Conan has been the host of a talk show for 16 years; his style is what it is and his staff has been in place for years. He and his staff know how to put on a show and they have been doing it for years. At this point it appears that the only way he would beat Lettermen is if Lettermen were to retire.
The reality is Conan isn’t cutting it and NBC has decided it would rather have Leno then Conan. They should have just cancelled him, after all his ratings are worthy of such an action but they didn’t want to pay him off.
When it is all said and done NBC now probably figures if Conan goes to Fox so be it, he’ll be third or fourth in the ratings and not really a concern.

He isn't doing better than Leno, obviously, but it's entirely ignorant to expect him to set the world on fire. He is taking over a show, it doesn't matter that he had his own show for 16 years prior, it's still a new audience, and everyone expected growing pains.
Leno was a regular guest host on Carson's show for years before he took it over, and a pretty big comedian in the 80s, so it's not like he was unfamiliar to America either. It took him quite a while to be the late night king.
Conan was beating Letterman in ratings before Leno showed actually. He was slowly sinking, but things turned worse come September. It also didn't help that Letterman had some nice controversial bits that helped him take a nice uptick.

None of the changes NBC has announced are going to take place until after the Olympics are over.
Leno will continue to do his 10pm show until it is time for him to move to 11:35pm.
Conan will continue to show up and do his 11:35pm show be cause he does not want to breach his contract with NBC.
When it comes time for Conan to start doing a show that airs at 12:05am, he will refuse and maintain that by changing The Tonight Show's timeslot, NBC has breached their contract with him.
NBC won't take Conan off the air because they don't want to fire him, and then have to pay him off.
