Actually, that was probably one of the biggest problems i've had with the show. In earlier seasons, Jim was portrayed as having a life outside the office, which is why he doesn't descend to the level of despair and inadequacy that his coworkers did. But it's sad to see that he has almost no life outside the office.

The Michael storyline was the best part of the episode. It was cringe-worthy throughout, but him leading the kids on about laptops and then providing batteries, then painfully writing checks for textbooks was great, as was the interaction of Erin. And it's his fault that Kevin's an accountant!

The Jim part had some moments, but I agree that Jim really was dumbed down. I also didn't really completely understand what was going on with the award, the bonus, and the rankings. Where did the bonus come from, I thought Dwight was getting 20 bucks from everyone, but at the end it was for a parking spot and thousands of dollars? It also seemed like it was implemented really, really quickly. He trusted Dwight with the stats, and then it didn't dawn on him that it was a setup, even after the cake arrived? And making fake complaint calls to corporate? You'd think part of Dwights master plan was to get the people so upset that they'd make their own calls, faking it was just too much.

The big logic gap in Jim's storyline is that one of the first things he tells Michael is that managers are excluded. But then he includes himself?

I don't think he included himself, he just took Dwight's list and didn't look at the names corresponding to the different numbers, right?

Jim didn't use Dwight's list -- he handed it off to somebody else to do (Toby?). At some point, you'd think he would have pointed out that he and Michael were excluded and/or that person would have figured it out on their own.

It's already been mentioned. Not the promise itself, but the notion that over ten years not one parent or student who was promised tuition looked up who Michael Scott is and learned he's not a millionaire.

Still, it was a funny storyline.

I thought he took Dwight's list and then went to review the results that he was given himself to pick the winner.

It's a little hard to buy, yeah, but you can fanwank around it (corporate donations, the whole thing being funded by some kind of foundation, a deal made with a particular school...)

If anything, I think it would've drummed up some attention in the press, and that would've been a question someone would've asked. On the other hand, I've seen first-hand how the local press will swallow a line without checking their facts, so maybe not...

Same here. This was suppose to be funny? Not by a longshot.

Finally watched the episode. Michael is an asshole who should be beaten to death with a lead pipe. I liked the show better when Michael's naivete only hurt himself. Though I do have to admit that his promise to the kids didn't seem out of character to me.

As for the Jim storyline, how the hell did he not realize something was going on? He's not an idiot and in fact has proven himself to be much, much smarter than Dwight in the past. But the thing I really don't understand about Dwight's evil plot is how Jim was assigning rankings to people anonymously. Was the idea that the winner would be absolutely random? Dwight faking the phone calls to David Wallace was pretty ridiculous as well.

No the idea was that everyone was assigned a number, and then their performance was ranked. But it didn't have their names on the sheet, just the number. Dwight had done the randomization but Jim was "picking" the winner. But Dwight rigged it so Jim and Pam would be the top two.

The only scene that I really liked was the car ride at the end.

Oh, so Dwight had done all the work in rating all the employees and Jim was just picking the anonymous person based on Dwight's ratings? That makes the whole situation even less believable.

Episode was so-so. I did enjoy getting to see a bit more of Erin though.

I thought they made a comment that Toby would be putting together the ratings (and Dwight either did them himself or changed them after Toby put them together).

This show is getting unwatchable to me. Jim has no life! Dwight never talks about beets anymore! We never see his brother! Did Jan die? What about her candle business??

I loved this episode. Michael's character has worn out his welcome with me but the cringeworthy factor was high this episode and worked very well. It seemed very possible that Michael would do such a thing. I don't like that Jim is a buffoon once Michael leaves the office, but I thought it worked okay here. No one would let him get a word in to actually explain.

Loved the quick cut of Pam's "Yup" about doubling her sales from 2 to 4.

I'm not at the level of it being unwatchable... but it's certainly become hokey. I've not missed an episode since day 1 and the first few seasons were sheer genius -- complete with ridiculous play on words, misuse of grammar, stereotypes, racial jokes, etc.
Now the stories are ridiculous and pander more to Michael being a complete moron (the episode where he gets invited to attend the board meeting was way over the top) rather than him trying to fit in and get his team to like him.
