How can that channel air a touchdown as it happens if they aren't showing the game already? I need to discover how they know to cut to a live feed just as it happens.

I'm not all that familiar with Quantum Leap, but wasn't it set in the present in the premiere when he stepped into the leap machine? Then he hopped around in the past.

Actually, Sam was from like 1999, which was then the future, but at any rate, the primary setting of the show is not 1999.

The pilot episode. In 1995, Sam Beckett, desperate to prove his time travel theory before the project runs out of funds, leaps before the kinks are worked out of the machine

Any time a team is in the red zone (20 yard line to end zone) they cut to the game live. If they miss a touchdown off a long play, they show the replay.

They cut to a game when a team moves into the red zone meaning that there is a strong possibility that a TD is coming up.
