TV ratings: Good start for 'Lost' as 'Idol' tops Tuesday
By Rick Porter
February 3, 2010 8:44 AM
Fast National ratings for Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010
The final season of "Lost" opened to bigger ratings across the board than last year's season 5 premiere, helping ABC to a solid second-place finish in adults 18-49 Tuesday. The Alphabet still trailed FOX and CBS overall, though.
FOX led the night with 16.9 million viewers and a 9.3 rating/14 share in households. CBS was close second with 16.1 million viewers and had a slightly better household rating, 9.9/16. ABC (11.4 million, 6.4/10) came in third. NBC (7.9 million, 4.9/9) took fourth as its gambit of putting "The Biggest Loser" directly opposite "Lost" didn't really work. The CW (767,000, 0.5/1) was barely in the picture with a night of reruns.
FOX's 6.4 rating took the top spot among adults 18-49, beating ABC's 5.1. CBS, 3.5, finished third, followed by NBC at 3.0. The CW managed only a 0.3.
Tuesday hour by hour:
8 p.m.
FOX: "American Idol" (24.4 million viewers, 13.3/20 households)
CBS: "NCIS" (19.1 million, 11.4/17)
ABC: Clip show - "Lost: The Final Chapter" (9.9 million, 5.8/9)
NBC: "The Biggest Loser" rerun (5 million, 3.2/5)
The CW: "90210" rerun (873,000, 0.6/1)
18-49 leader: "American Idol" (8.9)
9 p.m.
CBS: "NCIS: Los Angeles" (16.4 million, 10.0/15)
ABC: "Lost" season premiere (12.4 million, 6.9/11)
NBC: "The Biggest Loser" (9.6 million, 5.8/9)
FOX: "Kitchen Nightmares" (9.3 million, 5.4/8)

Wow! Human Target took a hit. The moving around and lack of an Idol lead-in finally hurt it.

Re: Primetime TV Ratings - Part IV (2009-2010 Season)
Hey Chris just curious why you don't use the tvbythenumbers info instead of zap2it. I use to always use this thread to find out ratings but the zap2it posts don't seem to mention all of the 18-49 demos and that's all that matters. I stopped looking at these threads for about a year and just came back today to see if things finally changed, but they haven't.
The total number of viewers and the household shares are absolutely meaningless and give indication to a shows survival. For instance the chart for last night has the NBC shows in 4th place from 8-10 but in reality they were in 2nd and 3rd. The Deep End however is listed as 3rd place but actually finished dead last and well below the CW. They seem to list the 18-49 averages for the night and the winner in the hour, but not individually for each show. I'm not trying to be a dick or anything but it just seems pointless to even look at total viewers since it tells us absolutely nothing about how well a show is doing. Anyway here's the chart with 18-49 demos.

Re: Primetime TV Ratings - Part IV (2009-2010 Season)
I'm not saying to stop posting, just that there's a better source for the information. Zap2it is misleading because it leads to people thinking shows are doing better or worse than they really are. Total viewers give no indication to a shows success. I'll keep going to tvbythenumbers regardless of what you do, but was just curious why you don't use their info since its more accurate, and if you were unaware of that site now you know it exists so you can get better information.

Seriously? Care to enlighten us why your source is so much "better"? I'm sure it will come down to execs looking at "key" demographics. I'd be more interested if they stopped using some form of data collection that doesn't take full advantage of technological advances developed over the past 20 years.

Re: Primetime TV Ratings - Part IV (2009-2010 Season)
I post every once and a while at tvbythenumbers.com, which esc24 is talking about and It's a great site for daily ratings information, but most of the people there are really snobbish about the demo numbers.
Since the start of the TV season, almost everyone there was predicting that The Good Wife would get cancelled because in their view the demos were too low even though it was probably one of the highest rated and critically acclaimed new dramas this year. And look where it is now, already got renewed for a 2nd season.

In recent CBS ads they claim that like 90 millions people watch the NCIS shows every week but looking at the ratings it only seems like 35 million combined. How do they come up with that number?

I think they count the initial airings, airings in other countries, streaming off CBS.com and maybe even downloads off Itunes.

Re: Primetime TV Ratings - Part IV (2009-2010 Season)
I don't think there is any reason to worry about Chuck getting another season. With the mess that is NBC right now, I just can't see them canceling it. I've been reading that even Heroes is fairly safe from the Network's perspective.

The start of the Hollywood round on "American Idol" Tuesday gave the show's ratings a boost over last week, but that didn't help FOX's new series "Past Life" much, which lost a good two-thirds of its lead-in.
That fade allowed CBS to stay close in the night's overall ratings. FOX (18.4 million viewers, 10.1/15 households) still led the night, but CBS (17.4 million, 10.7/17) was a close second. NBC (8 million, 5.0/8) edged ABC (7.3 million, 4.5/7) for third, although "Lost" stayed fairly solid at 9 p.m. The CW's reruns were barely in the picture with a scant 820,000 viewers and a 0.6/1.
FOX easily won the adults 18-49 demographic with a 6.6 rating. CBS, 3.8, came in second. NBC's 3.0 narrowly beat ABC's 2.9 for third. The CW drew a 0.3.
Tuesday hour by hour:
8 p.m.
FOX: "American Idol" (27.7 million viewers, 15.0/22 households)
CBS: "NCIS" (19.7 million, 11.8/17)
NBC: "The Biggest Loser" (7.9 million, 4.9/7)
ABC: "Lost" rerun (4.9 million, 3.2/5)
The CW: "90210" rerun (910,000, 0.6/1)
18-49 leader: "American Idol" (10.1)
9 p.m.
CBS: "NCIS: Los Angeles" (17.8 million, 10.8/16)
ABC: "Lost" (11 million, 6.4/10)
NBC: "The Biggest Loser" (10.2 million, 6.3/10)
FOX: "Past Life" premiere (9 million, 5.2/8)
The CW: "Melrose Place" rerun (731,000, 0.5/1)
18-49 leader: "Lost" (4.9)
10 p.m.
CBS: "The Good Wife" (14.7 million, 9.5/16)
ABC: "The Forgotten" (5.93 million, 3.8/6)
NBC: "The Jay Leno Show" final episode (5.86 million, 3.8/6)
18-49 leader: "The Good Wife" (3.1)

TV ratings: 'American Idol' wins Wednesday, 'Modern Family' strong
By Rick Porter
February 11, 2010 8:46 AM
Fast National ratings for Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2010
"American Idol" took its usual spot at the top of Wednesday's ratings, but ABC's comedy "Modern Family" posted some of its best ratings of the season opposite "Idol" -- though that didn't carry over to its companion show, "Cougar Town."
"The Middle" also had a better-than-average night for ABC, while FOX's "Human Target" held up reasonably well without an "Idol" lead-in. And NBC began its post-Jay Leno era at 10 o'clock with a "Law & Order: SVU" rerun that outdrew Leno's average Wednesday performance.
FOX drew 17 million viewers and a 9.4 rating/14 share for the night, beating CBS (12.15 million, 7.4/12) by a comfortable margin. ABC (7 million, 4.2/7) came in third. NBC's 5.7 million viewers and 3.9/6 was good for fourth, while another night of reruns on The CW (1.1 million, 0.7/1) trailed. (Note: Some stations pre-empted programming for coverage of the blizzard on the East Coast, which could affect final numbers.)
In the adults 18-49 demographic, FOX's 6.0 rating almost doubled the 3.3 for second-place CBS. ABC, 2.6, took third, followed by NBC, 1.6, and The CW, 0.6.
Wednesday hour by hour:
8 p.m.

CBS: "The New Adventures of Old Christine" (8.3 million, 5.1/8)/"Gary Unmarried" (7.7 million, 4.7/7)
ABC: Special - "A Charlie Brown Valentine" (7.5 million, 4.2/7)/"The Middle" (8.25 million, 4.7/7)
NBC: "Mercy" (6.8 million, 4.5/7)
The CW: "Life Unexpected" rerun (1.6 million, 1.0/2)
18-49 leader: "The Middle" (3.0)
9 p.m.
FOX: "American Idol" (25 million, 13.5/20)
CBS: "Criminal Minds" (14.8 million, 9.0/13)
ABC: "Modern Family" (10.1 million, 5.9/9)/"Cougar Town" (6.7 million, 4.1/6)
NBC: "Law & Order: SVU" rerun (4.45 million, 3.2/5)
The CW: "Gossip Girl" rerun (655,000, 0.5/1)
18-49 leader: "American Idol" (9.5)
10 p.m.
CBS: "CSI: NY" (13.7 million, 8.4/14)
