The easiest way to do that would be to not respond with such irrational hostility and venom to the comparisons (which are only natural given their similarities and overlapping airdates).

Funny being it was DS9 that came out first. So Babylon 5 was trying to be DS9 if you ask me. Besides I liked DS9 but it's hardly what everyone tries to make it out to be. Better than Next Gen.....please. Yeah maybe if you're a soap opera fan.

Re: Favorite STAR TREK show!

I'm a B5 guy (my favorite TV show, period) but I'd say

TNG
DS9
TOS

DS9 got good once they got with the arcing storylines (my Trekkie buddy loaned me the seasons since I'd never seen past S3 or so). But TNG had Picard, Data, Geordi...all interesting at times. Of course some of the Data eps are pretty cheesy.

I never got the love for TOS. I've been rewatching it occasionally via Tivo or Netflix. For every good episode there's 2 that are just super cheesy. The characters are good and have a good dynamic (at least, Bones, Kirk and Spock do) but some of the episodes are just too silly. And some of the of the funky pop-psychology in the era... just weird.

TNG suffers from this but less so after seasons 1-2 or so. And its biggest weakness is problems solved via technobabble.

Lastly...
I watched a hunk of Enterprise on HDNET. Not bad but not great. I hated Voyager.

By about a month (comparing the release of the pilot of B5 compared to DS9) so both were in production about the same time.

WRT DS9 v TNG... I would say it really comes down to whether you prefer serial or episodic TV. TNG had a couple of arcs that ran through the entire run, but very little to tie it all together (and don't even talk to me about the final let's make the first relate to the last "trial of humanity" or whatever it was ). DS9, once it found it's stride, did a good job of telling and overall story. Same w/ Bab5, it was a well thought out plan from the beginning mucked up by executives and the question as to whether or not there would be a 5th season.

Both DS9 and the Babylon 5 pilot premiered the exact same month in 1993, so "which one came first" is a poor frame of reference. Plus the fact that JMS pitched B5 to Paramount in 1991, talking about his concepts of a Space Station located next to a planet of immense universal interest, warring factions on said station, his 5-year serialized plan, everything that Paramount said "Thanks but no thanks to"... and then out of the blue Berman & his buddies suddenly had this TOTALLY ORIGINAL idea of another Star Trek series... on a space station... next to a wormhole of immense universal interest... with warring factions on said station... etc.

B5 wasn't a perfect show, but Seasons 2-4 were better than anything Star Trek ever produced. All IMHO, of course.

Re: Favorite STAR TREK show!

1. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Took a little while to hit it's stride, but when it did, it was fantastic.

2. Star Trek: The Next Generation - TNG and DS9 were always my favorites, since age 4, and I did think TNG was the best for many years, but as I got older, I thought/think DS9 is *slightly* better. Trek usually has great cast's, but TNG had an exceptional one. And the Enterprise D was probably the absolute best set of any scifi show.

3. Star Trek: Voyager - I don't get all the hate. Back in my day - the '90s, lol, I remember a lot of people loving the show, even non-Trekkers. I even remember the DS9 vs. Voyager fan wars.

4. Star Trek - Ok, but overrated....

5. Enterprise/Star Trek: Enterprise - I only watched most of the first season when it was originally on. Again, it was ok, but I didn't love it, no matter how hard I tried. I heard it got better in the last two or so years though. Maybe I'll eventually watch the entire show.

6. Star Trek: The Animated Series - Eh....I never really gave it a chance.

You're missing out, then. Both DS9 and B5 were fantastic.

That's just the thing a Herbert would say.

People readily mention the awkwardness of the first season or two of TNG, but I think the last season had some lame episodes. Masks? Sub Rosa? When I was watching Genesis where the de-evolving crew was cured because of a pregnant cat, I was expecting Graham Chapman, dressed as a Brigadier, to interrupt the scene saying that "it's entirely too silly." Maybe since it was the last season, they were using previously rejected scripts, weren't trying too hard or just wanted to pull some weird shit. Maybe some of all those reasons.

Voyager is an ok show but in retrospect not as good as some thought. Great start, some interesting characters and then they didn't do much with the premise. It didn't explore the conflict like it could of or the idea that they just may run out of food like the people on Farscape or Battlestar.

Re: Favorite STAR TREK show!

TNG sucked. The first two seasons are completely unwatchable. The third and fourth season are decent and have a couple good episodes, but then the final three seasons was nothing but soapy B-stories and people having reunions with long-lost relatives -- don't get me started on Crusher getting jiggy with her grandma's ghost-lover who stepped out of an Anne Rice novel.

Kirk and Sisko would kick Picard's ass and steal his women.

Nobody thought V'ger was good even when it was on. You should've seen some of the Usenet threads at the time -- for example some of the old Cynics Corner reviews.

Re: Favorite STAR TREK show!

I've actually just started rewatching Voyager because my boyfriend really likes it and has the complete series on DVD.

The early episodes are decently entertaining Star Trek-by-the-numbers, but we'll see what happens the more I get into it.

I'm most likely to enjoy re-watching TOS, but I still hold Deep Space Nine in high regard.

Re: Favorite STAR TREK show!

I just finished the Voyager first-season episode "The Cloud", where they encounter a nebula that sucks 20% of the ship's energy reserves. So how do the senior officers (including the captain) spend their evening at the end of the episode?

Just wait until you get to the episode where space cheese cripples the ship.
