What should I expect from DEADWOOD ?

It's even more distracting now that Garret Dillahunt is more well-known. That said, he does a good job in both roles.

Just started watching DEADWOOD
I couldn't get into the show when it originally aired. Every other word being cocksucker just seemed over the top and took me out of the show. Well, after everyone telling me I missed out on a great show I decided to give it another chance. The deciding factor being I was also late coming into watching Breaking Bad. And that turned out to be a great show once I really got into it.
Anyway, I convinced myself all this time that I had only seen two episodes. But, I must have watched at least 4 or stopped to watch some of the later episodes flipping through the channels. I noticed a lot of scenes from the later episodes.
I read an article recently that was published at the time of the first season where the show creator said they decided to use more common curse words instead of historically accurate cursing because it would have been comical. Example, using God dammit instead of gosh darn. I still feel the cursing is over the top and they could have achieved the same effect with less, but I allowed myself to concentrate on the storylines.
I haven't like everything in Season 1, but it's a decent show. I'm going to continue with the series to the end in order to give it a fair shake.
I'm a big Brad Dourif fan so I like his character the best, but there are others I enjoy. Hopefully, they explain more why Timothy Olyphant's character is so mad all the time. Or maybe they have and I just missed it. Is it just that he detests having to live among sleazy people like Swearengen?
Anyway, after one season in, I'm liking the show, but not loving it. What say all of you hardcore fans? If I'm not loving it by now, will I? Does Season 2 take it to a higher level?

I dunno. I loved it. In my top 10 TV series. It may have taken me a couple of episodes originally to get into it but I'm sure I knew I loved it by the time season 1 was over.

You probably won't ever LOVE it, if you're not thrilled by the end of Season 1. I thought the first two seasons were nearly perfect... still one of the best Dramas ever on TV IMO. (If they don't botch the final season, Breaking Bad is about to shoot up to #1 with a bullet on that list).

Thanks for the replies. I'm really trying to keep an open mind. I tried to get into Babylon 5 and it never was appealing to me. So, I stopped watching that. I watched the entire LOST series in 2 months. Thought it was awful.
Anyway, I'll start Season 2 today. I am interested in seeing if any of the main characters get killed off because it seems like several could be heading that way.

I wouldn't put it anywhere near my top 10 (I think that hyperbole gets thrown around a little too easily) but I definitely enjoyed it, and wish there had been more seasons. I do agree the language went unnecessarily overboard to the point where it was comical just the same, despite the reasoning given in the article you mentioned.

Overall I enjoyed the show. What I found the most distracting was Timothy Olyphant's acting ... he always looks like a constantly constipated beauty queen trying to smile while a video crew walks in on her having sex with a politician ... do I smile? Do I hide? Why can't I just poop? He just looks weird all the time.

I suspect you will never love it, or really even like it. Deadwood is largely ABOUT language and the use of words, and their relation to body language, including and particularly curse words. It is the fabric of the show. NO ONE talks like they do in Deadwood, but the language used in the show is what for many people (myself included) elevated the show to a completely different level. It is almost a little like Shakespeare, and the language and extremely adult dialogue provided the texture and momentum of the show that gave it so much vibrancy. If curse words bother you that much and pull you out of the experience than you will never really get the show. The language is what gave the show so much depth and infinite shadings of character that made the show what it is.

I never thought about the show in the way you're describing it. I'll definitely think about that now. This is why i started this thread. So, I could get some keen insight to this show. Thanks.

Re: Just started watching DEADWOOD
I thought it would get better plus I wanted to know the "secret" of the island. Hell, i stuck with Heroes for the same reason.
I watched the first two episodes of season 2 last night. I enjoyed it a lot more than any episodes in the first season. Al imitating E.B. was priceless. The fight and all the tensions around the camp were great. I really took to heart the idea of the dialogue being like a play. I enjoyed the show more.
I love serialized shows. Twin Peaks is my favorite show. I like most of HBO shows. Hell, i even like The Killing.

Alright, I'm 5 episodes into Season 2 and I'm loving it. Crazy, right? I don't know what it is, but Season 2 has just clicked for me. I'm a lot more interested in the storyline of what is going to happen with the camp being annexed. I think it ties in with my fascination with how the United States was formed.

Re: Just started watching DEADWOOD
I have the Season 1 DVD on tap to watch at some point. Is the language not historically accurate? Is that what I'm hearing in post #1? I don't know if I want to watch it then.
