Re: Doctor Who Series 5 Discussion (BBC)

If anyone is interested, the Doctor Who adventure games that have been available for UK residents is now available on Direct2Drive for $4.95 total: http://www.direct2drive.com/3/9642/p...and-2-Download

It uses the voices of Matt Smith and Karen Gillan and was written by series writers. I'm downloading them now.

Re: Doctor Who Series 5 Discussion (BBC)

So, I finished Series 5 last night. I warmed to Matt Smith pretty quickly. I cracked up every time he said something is cool. I liked the running jokes about bow ties too. My wife refuses to like him and still wishes Tenant had not left. Unless he changes substantially, that will always be her view. I liked that the cracks where clearly visible throughout the show (even though they were a little too in your face sometimes).

I warmed to him quite quickly and find him to be a worthy Doctor Who. Any word on when the next season is?

I believe it'll be the same schedule as usual: Christmas special in December, with the new series starting in the Spring.

It looks like the 2011 series will be split in two:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...leventh_Doctor
A new series is scheduled for broadcast in 2011 and will have thirteen episodes in total, split between spring and autumn, with a "game changing" mid-season finale.
Hmm...

Interesting. So, I suppose we'll see a "shocking" cliffhanger at the end of episode 6, and come back in autumn for the reset button to be pushed in episode 7.

I would like to have a series closer w/o that button getting pushed again.

Re: Doctor Who Series 5 Discussion (BBC)

I'd hope that Moffat has something better up his sleeve than another reset button.

I've been rewatching this series with a friend of mine (he watched series 1-4 on his own) and I've been appreciating it more. Karen Gillan is the real draw for me, though. She sells Amy so perfectly.

Re: Doctor Who Series 5 Discussion (BBC)

According to Dr. Who mythology, isn't there only a limited number of "regenerations" the Dr. can go through? How close are we to that and has that been addressed by the show runners recently?

Re: Doctor Who Series 5 Discussion (BBC)

13 is the number of regenerations a Time Lord has. Matt Smith is the 11th. The Master got around it using some weird body-stealing scheme, but I'm sure they'll come up with some loophole as to why the Doctor can regenerate more. Or maybe they'll just ignore that little tidbit entirely.

How were the games?

It's been implied that the limit on regenerations was at least partially imposed by the Time Lords High Council. The High Council actually forced the third regeneration on The Doctor as part of a punishment, and they granted additional regenerations to The Master on two occasions.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regener...#In_the_series
The BBC's Series 4 FAQ suggests that now the Time Lord social order has been destroyed, the Doctor may be able to circumvent the limit on regenerations; it says: "Now that his people are gone, who knows? Time Lords used to have 13 lives."

Re: Doctor Who Series 5 Discussion (BBC)

The games were pretty simplistic and were clearly made as an educational tool for children. Also, they ran like crap on my computer, which could play far more complex games easily, so I'm guessing they're just poorly made. I wouldn't recommend them.

Interesting to note about the High Council. You'd think it would be a biological thing and not something that could be enforced, but I suppose if Time Lords had unlimited regenerations naturally it would be necessary to limit it for the continual growth of the society. I do know the Master chose not to regenerate at the end of season 3, so I suppose it could be a conscious choice.

Stephen Moffat has said in interviews that a friend of his has come up with a way around the regeneration limit that will be worked into dialogue. There's some suspicion that he might be talking about Russell T. Davies and that the dialogue in question might actually occur in the two-parter of "The Sarah Jane Adventures" that Matt Smith will be guest-starring in.

It's twelve regenerations, which means thirteen incarnations. We're on the eleventh doctor, so he still has two regenerations in him.

This was first introduced in, I think, "Deadly Assassin," where they had The Master dying from a botched attempt at a thirteenth regeneration. It's never been outright explained how it works, though in "Five Doctors" the Time Lords offered The Master a new regeneration cycle, which might imply this is somehow imposed by the Time Lords and not a biologicial limit.

Either way, it shouldn't be too difficult to work around it when the time comes... just say that the rules changed after the Time War, or something and forget about it. Or the "Eye of Harmony" or the TARDIS or something could just keep him going.

You're right, 13 incarnations. One birth and 12 regenerations. My bad.

And I still need to see the Sarah Jane Smith Adventures.

Completely off the top of my head musings...

I always figured that the "half human" thing was a mandate from Fox, believing that audiences wouldn't sympathize with a protagonist that wasn't human.
I think they could do another film with McGann showing part of the Time Wars and with him regenerating to Ecclestone either towards the end or midway. If Moffatt was involved, the narrative most likely would hop around anyway.

River Song could also be the female clone of the Doctor that we saw regenerate at the end of an episode a couple of years back.

Maybe he could merge with his clone and gain further generations that way!

They're not bad if you remember that, more so than the main show, they are deliberately youth-centric.

Makes sense. Sarah Jane is youth-centric, Doctor Who is a balance, and Torchwood is completely for adults.

Re: Doctor Who Series 5 Discussion (BBC)

Last I read, Sarah Jane S4 is set to start on BBC1 on Monday, October 11, with new episodes airing on Mondays (Part 1 of the story) and Tuesdays (Part 2 of the story) for six weeks.

Keep in mind that the BBC do not usually officially announce exact start date and time until about two weeks before premiere (which means there might be official news sometime next week).

I am looking forward to seeing the return of Jo, The Doctors previous companion. RTD is writing.

SJA premiered October 11th. This week's two episodes (The Death of the Doctor) will be the 5th and 6th episodes for this season. Then again, these are probably the only two episodes that really matter.
