We've noticed this too. But, I'm guessing the random shots of a full shop are taken when they aren't really shooting. Looks like they clear out the shop when they shoot a segment. The only constant between the two is that really big guy sitting by the door.

I had a friend that was in Vegas not too long ago, and her friend wanted to go by the shop and take some pics. Seems there was a huge line and a charge to get in (they didn't really investigate much, they just assumed that's what it was for). Wonder if that was actually a "casting call" to find people with the more interesting things to pawn.

Wasn't that the same guy who pawned an NBA championship ring that rejected Rick's offer, then came back later and took it??

I am associated with a non-profit & we put up two storage buildings as an investment. The people who stop paying rent & disappear are typically storing household crap often due to a location move or an eviction or a relative dying and no place to put their goods. Or they have moved from a house to an apartment and the leftover junk goes into storage. When we have auctions we're lucky if we recover the back rent and expenses for the sale.

Those who store valuables typically pull the stuff out before they stop paying the rent, and we double lock their door, unless they are in jail, which is rare (but does happen).

One has to remember by law, which varies by state, the building owner must send a certified letter to the renter and usually buy a newspaper ad stating same before an auction so they usually decide whether it's worth it for them to retreive the items. That said, there are occasions these people cannot be reached and those units could hold treasures. (i.e. the Paris Hiltons)

Always a crap shoot!

My father-in-law stopped by the shop a few months back. There is a long line to get in, and they do clear everyone out to shoot, but he said there was no charge to get in, and people like Rick, and Chumlee were talking to people, signing autographs and posing for pictures with kids.

He said some people from History channel were asking if people wanted to be on TV.

I have bought/bid on items from them long before they where on TV. I was the one who won the Tron disc. They are nice people from a buyers stand point. One other thing is after they went on TV I have seen some odd priced items showing up.

How come when people bring in guns, they just carry it in over their shoulder like it's a t-shirt or something and no one gets scared that they may be getting held up or something?

I dunno. I go to the gun shop all of the time. Never been held up there.

What you don't usually see is there is a security guard at the door who checks everything as it comes in. Plus, they don't deal with guns prior to 1898 (which allows them to not have a gun license) so there probably isn't too much danger of someone bringing in a gun that can cause too much damage.

That makes sense, thanks. It's just strange seeing a dude desperate for cash walk into an establishment filled with it while holding a fire arm out in the open.

guns werent lethal before 1898?
anyways the show is staged. the producers have the guy waiting outside until they are ready for his scene. its not like they are filming all day. they close the store for a few hours, scatter some random customers inside then film some scenes.

of course they were lethal. but i'd say it's highly unlikely some dude is going to come storming into the pawn shop with a musket and try to rob the place.

That is so true. Maybe they're getting free weekly lunches (and now breakfasts) at their locale.

No kidding. Pisses me off. I used to love the show but the staged stuff and ridiculous product placement for Subway has gotten out of control.

Last night's episode with the guys working out in the gym was a new low. It's obvious that the writers put in the whole "let's get in shape" bit just so they could equate overall health with the "healthy new breakfast options now available at Subway."

Won't be long until somebody strolls into the shop looking to sell something really cool and Rick says, "Wow, this is really cool...(turns to face camera)...almost as cool as Subway's new Chipotle Turkey Club."

Re: Pawn Stars on History Channel

All 3 Harrisons pull their info from Wiki or the like. The items are set ups. For example the Houdini straight jacket, they knew they weren't buying it but it made for good TV.

As to Rick gouging people I've see at least one example where he knew what was being sold was worth more than the guy was asking and he told him. Les Gold of Hardcore Pawn probably would have taken the item at the under price. He did that to one guy and before the guy even got his money from the window Les had sold the item for twice the price he paid.

Auction Hunters is also faked to an extent. They only show the lockers that have good junk in them. I'd love to see how much they actually make. I don't know if the lockers are "salted" to make for good TV but I wouldn't doubt it.

Re: Pawn Stars on History Channel

I went to the store in Vegas just under a year ago. It was pretty packed for a Thursday afternoon and it was basically partitioned so you had to walk by all the stuff like a line of cows. The place is full of marketing items to buy (t-shirts, coffee mugs, etc) and they were not filming that week. We got to meet the Old Man but he was pretty much a dick who wouldn't speak to anyone and looked completely annoyed by his "fame". This show has run it's course with me and the attitudes they displayed didn't help.

He addresses this in his NPR interview: http://www.npr.org/2011/06/09/137033...als-and-steals

It's stupid, but who cares? Shows like AI force Coke, ATT and Ford down people's throats. At least this show is far more entertaining than crap like AI.

Re: Pawn Stars on History Channel

Honestly who cares if they advertise Subway on the show? I mean it isn't like they're advertising with big ads plastered all over the place or anything they just mention that they're eating it. It hasn't gone overboard in my opinion or not to the extent where it's bothersome. As far as the show being set up I kind of figured it was to some extent anyways. I guess the show is still fun to watch and entertains me so I don't really mind.

Yes it has.

"Oh boy...whatcha eating? A Steak Egg Flatbread sandwhich? Yum! What about you? You got that cookie one sale for 2 for $1?". It's really sad.

Meh..it's not that bad though. I guess to me it's not really a bother. The way you act it's like they mention it a bunch of times every episode and have Subway signs plastered all around the store or something, I've seen shows with much worse product placement than this.

Seems that the Subway diet really did help: http://www.cnn.com/2011/SHOWBIZ/TV/0...html?hpt=hp_t2

By the way, how did they sell that antique crapper chair the same day it was purchased? I thought you have to wait a month to sell things at a pawn shop after it's been bought from someone?
