Re: Why don't the late night talk shows have guest hosts
The problem with Stewart is that he would allienate 1/2 of a national audience with his politics. He has every right to express his political views, but I wonder if a network like NBC or CBS be scared off because he would essentially be geared towards a more liberal audience.
That was what made Carson so great is you never knew his politics, as he ripped on both political parties (whoever was President at the time), so he never allienated anyone.

I just wish that they would stop looking for names in late night to take over shows. Who thought Craig Ferguson would be a great host when he got the job? Who heard of Conan before his show? Jimmy Kimmel had a respectable career in radio and was a game show host, but who outside of avid sports fans and Comedy Central viewers knew who he was?
That's why I am starting to get sick of Loren Michaels turning Late Night into an after SNL job for his favorite cast members. I think he's a great producer, but I don't think Seth Meyers has the vibe that's right for that show. I don't know...I kind of wish they had tried to find an unknown. Any more it's all about trying to land the name, not the talent.

Sure, he does. I do think Stewart has his biases...he tried to stick up for Anthony Weiner when the sexting scandal first broke, but once he realized his buddy was guilty, he was eating crow and joining in on the jabs. So he may have his favorites he likes to perch up, but if they do something stupid, he'll go after them.

Stewart also hosted a late night talk show that replaced Arsenio in 1994 for a whole season (plus had a similar talk show on MTV before that).

Martin Short is ok in small doses but if he was a full time host it would be torture and he is not that funny where everything he says the audience laughs
