You took it entirely out of context. Men are more likely to watch sports than arc based dramas ... you are right. Thanks for illustrating my point.

I think it's entirely dependent on the type of serial. If you're talking Desperate Housewives or Grey's Anatomy, sure they aren't as likely to watch because those type of shows are soap operaish and geared toward women. If it's Lost, Heroes, Friday Night Lights or many of the grittier cable serials, then men will be attracted to it.

Sorry, I deleted my post rewrite it.

And the ratings of each type of show you described illustrates what I am trying to say. Heroes, Terminator, FNL numbers don't come close to DH, PP or GH. Sitcoms, Reality TV, Episodic and sports are easier to program.
Shows like Lost and House pull both demographics.

It is tough to create successful arc based dramas for men.

I'm not going to pretend to be sad over this. Dollhouse has been painful for me and my wife to watch. I loved Angel and Firefly, liked most of Buffy except the last season, but this show is just terrible. I really don't get the "it's getting better" crowd since I just can't see it. It's already come off my weekly recording schedule and I was happy to do so.

If it gets cancelled this time, I'll fully understand why - I really wanted to see Eliza in a new show (loved Tru Calling), but she just can't carry this kind of show where she isn't REALLY a character - I have no way to root for her since all of her actions are programmed by someone else. And her acting chops just aren't up to that.

Well, this whole thing started out like this:

Eliza: Hey Joss, I have a development deal at the Fox network!

Joss: Fox? What is this Fox you speak of?

Eliza: you know, the ones who fucked you over with that show about the giant bug?

Joss: Oh....I suppressed those painful memories. What are you gonna do there?

Eliza: I don't know....stuff? I can do anything I want!

Joss: Yes you can. You can play anyone you want too. You ooze much range-y goodness...hey! I think I have an idea for a new show!

Eliza: Do tell!

Joss: A show where you literally play anyone you want - A cop one day, a whore the next, a saint another day, a mental patient another....think of the range!

Eliza: Wow, that sounds awesome! Think of the super hottie outfits I can wear!

Joss: Or not wear!

Eliza: ;)

Joss: If only it wasn't for Fox....any chance of weaseling out of that? No? Damn. I've been burned, and Tim's been burned, probably more than I've been. And now we're about to go crawling back for more....yay!

Buffy and Firefly are my two favorite shows of all time, and Angel is in my top 10. That being said, this show isn't very good at all. I get the "it's getting better" viewpoint because it's true-- the show hasn't, however, gotten SIGNIFICANTLY better.

Funny. To be fair, the FOX regime has changed since Firefly. This time, perhaps the new lesson Joss will learn is to avoid FOX no matter who is in charge!

i sort of hope they do cancel it. i mean, i'm only about 4 episodes in and not really sure i want to continue. this would make it so easy to just delete the rest.

What the hell is with networks not finishing out a series ! hell if they aren't gonna air it primetime and already paid for it, why not air it at 3am ???

From E! Online:

Epitaph One:
Spoiler:
UPDATE, 3:38 p.m.: Spoiler alert! Just snagged ya'll some exclusive new info on "Epitaph One." A source whispers to me that "Epitaph One" comes from the writerly brains of Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen. It's a totally non-finale-ish stand-alone episode, and—here's the crazy part—it's apparently set in the future, after the apocalypse, amidst total anarchy. And yes, I am describing an episode of Dollhouse, not a scene from Terminator. No word yet on where, when or how we might be able to see it if not on Fox, but just off the top of my head, Hulu, DVD/Blu-Ray and/or a special Comic-Con screening all come to mind. What sounds good to you?

I think he said that after this show he will not do TV again.

He said this after Firefly, too, didn't he?

It's pretty clear that Firefly was pretty much the pinnacle of Whedon's talent and the story he cared about the most. I doubt he's got much left in him (see: Dr. Horrible, aptly named). Dollhouse has gotten to be pretty entertaining, but it's a half-baked concept that he developed because someone else wanted a job.

well, a better move would be to wait until there's SyFy, then move it there because it would be a much cooler channel.

I really like the show, but I'm also a Buffy/Angel nut, but the time slot is horrendous. I normally have to wait to catch it on Tivo or Hulu the next day. A show like this should probably be on earlier in the week, not when people are out on Fridays or Saturdays.

Tahmoh is already cast in another pilot, Riverworld so who knows.

Come again? As in Philip José Farmer's Riverworld?

Any more info?

It's a miniseries adapted by "Deep Space Nine" writer Robert Hewitt Wolfe, and if successful could become a regular series.

I'll watch anything Whedon does, love Eliza, and have kind of enjoyed the show but I've always thought the premise is weak. I kept waiting for some explanation as to why this would even be something anyone would do except to make sex slaves. I mean if you can add skills and stuff to people, wouldn't that make more sense as a military application or spy stuff? Soldiers would totally volunteer to have expert skills implanted. Why would you do it in any way shape or form how they've done in the show. No sense at all.

Hate to say it but unless they pull some credible twist out of their butts, it deserves to be canceled.

FOX did not pay for this episode. Sister company 20th Television commissioned it.

He said something along those lines. He is/was tired of the creative interference. He wanted to look at internet projects.

I really doubt this will be his last television project.

While I agree, I have to wonder if this 13th episode opens up a whole new can of crap for subsequent seasons while illuminating the whole arc (not unlikely in a Wheedon series' season finale).

However, I bet that Wheedon is more likely to have that episode potentially wrap the series with an open end for another (see also Buffy S1 - it could have ended right there). So why FOX wouldn't air it is beyond me...

I feel the same way. Honestly if Joss's name wasn't on this I doubt I would've continued past the first episode, but he's bought enough good faith with me that I gave this one more of a chance.

To me, the biggest problem was the decision to have everything revolve around Echo. I understand casting Eliza was the genesis of the concept, but this show really needs a real lead character... Echo is either a random character or she's mentally challenged, nothing we can really get invested in emotionally. I understand the goal is to tell her story through the others, but none of the supporting characters are interesting enough to pull that off. This is in sharp contrast to the other Whedon shows, where both the leads AND the supporting cast were people you wanted to root for. Hell, those shows even got me invested in 3rd-tier characters like Joyce and Lorne (RIP, Andy).

Thinking about it, if Whedon was really good and wanted his shit on TV why not go to SiFi with an idea? Maybe even HBO. FIrefly woulda been the shit on there. WHy stick with FOX

Re: Dollhouse to be cancelled?

I'm fine with it being cancelled. I'm a huge Whedonite. But Dollhouse, even with the dramatic week 6 improvement, isn't up to standard. I will however support it on dvd.

lamphorn 04-10-09 06:03 PM

Re: Dollhouse to be cancelled?

It's too bad. I also don't think Dollhouse has shown much promise, but I wish they'd give it a chance to generate a fanbase and let Whedon get past the introduction and get the "real story" going, whatever that's going to be. This kneejerk cancelling has more to do with execs trying to save their jobs than with the good of the network.

Don't know about Terminator. They probably won't cancel it with a new movie coming, but the fatal flaw is the miscasting of Sarah Conner. How they thought it was a good idea to cast an actress who seems more like a sitcom mom than a badass is beyond me. I realize Linda Hamilton was not available, but this "Sarah Conner" bears almost no relation to the character from the movies... She also looks like she's about 5 years older than her son. I stopped watching after the Pilot because of her.

Patman 04-10-09 06:13 PM

Re: Dollhouse to be cancelled?

Lena Headey is in her mid-30's, totally plausible age to have a kid like John Connor's age on the show.
