"I discovered halfway through writing the second season the show was going to end," Heller said. "The second was going to end with the death of Brutus. Third and fourth season would be set in Egypt. Fifth was going to be the rise of the messiah in Palestine. But because we got the heads-up that the second season would be it, I telescoped the third and fourth season into the second one, which accounts for the blazing speed we go through history near the end. There's certainly more than enough history to go around."

Fans of HBO’s critically-beloved (but short-lived) series Rome may not have seen the last of Vorenus and Pullo. Multiple sources have confirmed to EW that a big-screen sequel to the sword-and-sandals series is well underway. Rome creator/executive Bruno Heller — who went on to create CBS’s hit The Mentalist — has finished a script for Morning Light Productions, which financed the development and will produce the film. Series stars Kevin McKidd (Lucius Vorenus) and Ray Stevenson (Titus Pullo) will likely sign onto the movie, which picks up in Germany four years after the series ended. The next step for Morning Light is to find a director and a studio, since HBO Films won’t be involved.
Rome the series aired from 2005-07 and took place during Ancient Rome, beginning with Caesar’s invasion of Gaul and continuing with the rise of the first Emperor Augustus. The series centered on soldiers Pullo and Vorenus, who appeared to die at the end of the series.

Would it really be ROME if Augustus has the city easily in hand for the next 40 years and all we have is conflict in German territories?

For me it is 'Carnivale,' but at the same time at least we know this isn't an HBO decision, but the production companies, as they mention they still need to find a studio to distribute.
But, I really enjoyed ROME and will definitely put down $12 to visit it one more time.

I want to be stoked over this ... but I'm not. I would much rather see HBO finish one of these shows (Rome, Deadwood, Carnivale) as they were meant to be. I can't get excited over 2 hours that cannot flesh out the plotlines that made these shows great.

I get what you're saying but, there's no way they can get everyone back to do more seasons of the shows. Hopefully this Rome movie will be successful and open possibilties for the others.

I don't see how they can have a sequel with the same characters given that not all of them were still alive at the end of the series.
A better sequel idea would be to set it 40 years ahead in time as Augustus' reign is ending and the power struggles for his successor start.
