I didn't realize how unnecessary cable tv is until I canceled it

I decided to get rid of cable about a month or so ago and I really think its one of the best decisions I've ever made. Everything I watch has been online ovguide.com and hulu. But I've been keeping up with current events and reading more. Anyone else live in a cableless world?

Absolutely. There's a ton of wonderful programming on HBO and Showtime... which is why I Netflix them.

Well, with Hulu and veoh you pretty much have cable. I haven't watched TV since '05 myself, although I catch the occasional Hulu show (like Tiny Gorgeous Chicken Machine Show).

If I wasn't a sports fan, I would have done this a long time ago. But the thought of being without ESPN is a very, very cold one.

Yup, I'm busy watching ESPN as well as Fox Sports for my Lakers/Dodgers fix. I actually don't really watch much else regularly on cable, but no way i'm giving up sports games.

I got rid of my cable two weeks ago. I thought I was going to 'bunny ear' the basic channels. But where I'm at in Phoenix, I don't get a signal. Walking into the Cox office, sitting down my DVR cable box - oooo it felt good.

I also got rid of my internet at home. I just post here when I'm eating at the office. Other than that, I surf the net without leisure (jerkin' off at the office is a no-no).

TV left me slothy and unfocused. After around two years of becoming a TV junkie, I quit. How many times exactly can one watch Scrubs reruns? I'd DVR Late Night w/Conan, The Daily Show and Colbert and watch all three every single day. And I'd wake up to our fluff new station. When all was said and done, I watched TV for a good three to four hours every single day. My Saturdays and Sundays were melting away from watching the same movies on Encore stations all of the time.

I'll definately miss Conan, Fox Sundays, The Sara Conner Chronicles and Thursday-night NBC. But it's a small price to pay.

I vow to never get cable again.

Next Up: Porn (which mostly went away with my internet).

If I didn't follow the Yankees and Nets, and watch the WWE...I would have no reason to keep cable. Every cable show I like makes it onto DVD, and honestly I can wait for them to release.

thas funny because when I quit cable i was wondering how many channels Scrubs could come on. And HBO is overrated IMO. I mean the original programing is good but the run the same damn movies every day and its HBO and HBO West so I end up seeing Transformers like five times in two days. Not really worth the extra $25 bucks to watch the same movie all month.

And I never realized how unnecessary TV and Movies are when I stopped watching along with my kids(it was their decision) around 3 weeks ago. The only thing we watch is ATP tennis. They decided to stop watching TV so they can concentrate on music(both play the piano), tennis, and studies. That was a pretty brave decision by them(they are 15 and 12)

They sound mature beyond their years.

I couldn't give up TV. Need my sports!

We watch just tennis. My wife and I told them that they are very intelligent(true) and very talented(also true) and they could do so much more if they gave due diligence to studies, the piano, and tennis. My older son wasn't so enamored of TV and video games. The younger one, however did everything so that TV and Video games made up every interval. For example, if I told him he should practice piano for half an hour, he would practice exactly for 30 minutes, then tell me "I practiced for 30 min. can I go watch TV?" He would go down and watch every chance he got. We got a little tired of being asked "Can I go...." every 5 to 10 minutes.

That led to that talk on their talent and potential and surprisingly, the younger one decided to stop watching and the older one and I both joined in.

I canceled cable back in 2002 because I wasn't watching much. We went without until last year when we decided to sign up for DirectTV. The only thing I really watch on that is Red Sox games so I still don't have much use for it.

I honestly can't remember the last time I sat down and watched an actual TV show when it was being broadcast. It was at least four years ago. I don't really watch anything off of my DVR either, come to think of it. Dammit, I should cancel Dish Network.

We got rid of cable last month. Now we only have the internet, netflix, and an HDTV antenna.

The only sport I actually follow is NFL football, and I can listen to the Packers on the radio whenever they are on ESPN. I couldn't give a shit about other sports.

I've been debating the merits of cable for a while now...I love watching hockey, and there's pretty much no other way to do so. I do think I'll be paring down the package though...perhaps soon. Especially with the OTA HD in my area. (which reminds me, I need to start looking for a good OTA box)

If there was an a la carte option, I'd love it, because I'd have about 25 channels, and no need for anything else.

I would reconsider cable if there was an a la carte option. I don't need 20 sports and 20 chick channels
