Like others have said (or perhaps just a select few), I make time for TV, the internet, and gaming.

I still go to work five days a week. I still exercise nearly every day. I still read every day. I still visit with friends/family. I go out and mingle with the commonfolk.

But yes, multimedia is quite good. A lot of TV watching/'net surfing is done at the same time, and other times (Scrubs reruns mostly), the television is on in the background as I do other things; clean, paperwork, etc.

I make time to do that which I enjoy. Life doesn't stop; it merely pauses for a moment to bask in the pleasant, soothing aura that exudes in a dizzying fervor from my television...

I didn't think we could do without cable until we dropped it because the price was just too high. We still keep local channels through our cable provider (about $13/month). Everything we watch is on the local channels and with a TiVo, it still gets interesting suggestions for more viewing. We save about $600/year this way.

Whole thread is giving me the heeby jeebies.

Within the past year I went from an 11" TV/VCR Combo to a 27" Olevia HDTV to what you can see in my signature.

I am a huge movie buff but believe it or not I never quite realized what I was missing out on until I started upgrading my stuff. I'm glad I did.

On the subject of cable: I don't need it. I own too many DVD's/Blu-ray's that still need to be watched anyway. There's no time for cable viewing.

I understand that some of you probably just can't afford it. Cable or Satellite is a luxury item and not everyone needs it.

If your not a sports fan, then I can see you not needing. However, I cannot imagine life without FSN West and Lakers Home Games or Thursday Night NBA on TNT.

However, I have a decent paying job and I fucking hate rabbit airs and putting foil on it to get a decent signal.

I got Directv and love it. Cable sucks, but satellite rules!!

Plus, Directv has Friday Night Lights this October uncut and commercial free, so ha ha!

I know people who grew up without cable/dish or much TV at all and it's weird when they're unfamiliar with random movies, cartoons, and classic TV shows which us TV junkies take for granted.

I remember being a kid on the school bus in the mornings listening to the other kids talking about shows I've never heard about. Felt a little excluded then.

I'm so confused by the idea of this thread. What is it you people do then? Go outside? *shudder*. I'm pretty sure I'd wither and die without TV/Sports/Movies.

Gave up cable 6 months ago because we were hardly watching it anyway. The kids watched maybe 30 minutes per day. Now they read or play legos instead of asking to watch TV. My 7 year old read 54 books over the summer (and he was at sports camp all day, so don't think he just sits around). I think that's going to pay off for him a lot more than watching Cartoon Network.

And there's always the internet for wasting massive amounts of time. (Obviously - I'm posting here, instead of studying).

Hell, I'm about to call Comcast to give me MORE cable TV. Got an HDTV now.

Actually I went the other way... Didn't have cable for the longest time (almost a decade I believe) but then last year broke down and got it. Then I got the Tivo and I just switched to FIOS yesterday and now I have more shows to watch than I know what to do w/

If I had to cancel anything, I'd pick network TV over cable TV - I average about an hour of TV a day (not including dvds or videogames), but it's mostly from regular cable (DailyShow/Colbert, Shield, MadMen, etc.), and I only watch a handful of shows on broadcast TV. And my cable bill (which includes my DirecTivo) is only $50, which I consider chump-change for what I get. So I would never consider getting rid of it.

It seems like most of the people giving up their cable are doing so because they have little self-control, so I guess it's a smart move for them.

Also, having Comcast TV makes my Comcast internet price cheaper.

I was googling and found the Top Bunk threads. I laughed over them so hard that I thought "I have GOT to be part of this community," and the rest is history.

I would take it off, but I am fine with the price I have right now.

I keep the most basic of cable service just in case someone wants or needs to stay over - so they can watch if they stay up later than I do - a friend complained about the selection once and I 'threatened' to take it all off. .

I also have cable internet (don't have home phone service - cell only) so I try to bundle that with basic cable service when I can.

I also find it quite ironic that we are even having a discussion about NOT having cable TV (or otherwise), in a forum dedicated to TV watching in all it's glory. Wouldn't that be kinda like going into a crowded bar and starting to preach to all around you about why you don't drink?

After thinking about it, I'm confused by the real point of this thread. This is a forum for people who watch TV (network and cable) and like to talk about it, and the OP is saying that he would rather read more and do other things. If he doesn't have the time/money for cable then great I understand his case. But, I have to agree with the above analogy about going into a crowded bar and preaching why you don't drink...same applies here to people who are coming into this forum to talk about cable and network TV.

It's more like he went to his friends' clubhouse, started a conversation about how he doesn't like drinking, and suddenly found himself in the middle of a crowded bar with a bunch of drunks who had heard every word.

I haven't had cable in about 10 years, and I don't miss it a bit. My girlfriend got over not having cable shortly after moving in with me, and she doesn't want it anymore either. People look at us strange, especially when we mention that we also only have one tv, and it's not in the bedroom. We do have OTA, although I rarely use it.

Every time I think about not having cable, or someone else brings it up, I think of kvrdave.

I agree with this ... no TV in the bedroom.

I remember when i moved a few years back, we went without cable (except for internet) for about 4 months. It was weird, to say the least. My wife even complained a little after awhile because she said "I can't channel surf through my game shows, Lifetime movies, and food network." In the 4 month span we went through a ton of DVD's. 4 seasons of X-Files, 2 seasons of Dead Like Me, a bunch of seasons of Law & Order SVU, 3 seasons of Quantum Leap, and 4 seasons of Doogie Howser just to name a few, not to mention all the movies.

Once we get a laptop we might drop cable again. I have blockbuster online now, plus we are starting to get a stack to go through again.

We do have a TV in the bedroom, but it doesn't have cable. Only a dvd player hooked up.
