Wait--WHY did Jack Tripper have to pretend to be gay?
my coworker insists that the apartment building Janet and Chrissy were living in were for women only--therefore Mr Furley wouldnt let him live there if he was a straight male. BUT didnt Larry live in the same building? I dont remember anything about the place being for women only.

I think you're confusing Three's Company with Bosom Buddies.
but it does bring up an interesting point. Why was Mr Furley AGAINST a straight guy living with 2 straight girls in an apartment of his, but he had no problem with knowing that a guy was boning other guys in his place? Seems a bit strange, especially for the liberated 70s, dontcha think?

It does seem kind of odd that Mr. Roper and then Mr. Furley were so prudish that they wouldn't allow a straight guy to live with women, but didn't mind a homosexual.
Plus, Furley thought of himself as a swinging single, so he should be in favor of Jack banging two chicks at once.

Roper was the landlord when he moved in (not Furley).
Basically, a straight guy living with two chicks = non-stop orgy. Gay guy, no problem. So yes, he was more prudish about the orgy then about him being gay.
Also, I once (in around 1983 I think) had to tell someone my girlfriend and I were engaged to get them to rent an apartment to us, so people did used to be pretty weird about that kind of stuff.

Diidn't Jack confess to Furley in the final season that he was straight after he started dating Vicky?

In 1998, I had to tell the landlady I was engaged so she would allow my boyfriend to live there.

I live with 5 other guys in a house in Philly, so either our landlord doesn't give a shit or he thinks we're swingin' gay-style into the wee hours of the night (and doesn't give a shit).
Oddly enough, the City itself does. There's a housing statute that states that no more than three unrelated members of the same sex can live in the same house. It's still enforced (we had to sign two separate leases - 3 on each - to get around it). I looked into it and apparently it's a law designed to cut down on brothels.
So my point, I guess, is this: Any good looking women who want to mistake our house for a male brothel, we're totally cool with it.

Thanks to Three's Company I was able to rent an apartment with two women during the late 70s. It helped to direct the mind of potential landlords to the TV show, and out of the bedroom (or gutter in a couple of cases).

Here's some interesting Three's Company trivia: Not only was Three's Company a remake of a British show (Man About The House), but both of the Three's Company spinoffs (Three's A Crowd and The Ropers) were remakes of the British show's spinoffs (Robin's Nest and George And Mildred)!

Remember that the trio lived right above the landlord. They might not have cared about what Larry was doing because he was somebody else's problem but may have wanted to make sure they wouldn't hear constant mattress-creaking right above them.

I can't believe I thought this show was funny when I was young. I tried watching an episode recently and found the writing to be bad and the acting to be horribly overbroad.
