Official 2008 Last Comic Standing Thread

Am I blind and not seeing a thread about this show that started last Thursday?

There were a couple of funny comedians (the one with the big nose was the funniest).

I hate what they've done with the format though. The first season will always be the best, because they got to live together and we saw the funny things that happened.

Bring back Dave Mordal.

Chris

You're not blind, it's just that nobody cares enough about the show. Past winners haven't exactly gone on to greater fame.

Although the hillbilly from last season was in the recent Harold & Kumar movie.

I don't know if I'll get into the show again this season.

Charlie Goose 07-11-08 11:31 AM

Well, they went from 12 finalists to 10 last night.

Iliza Schlesinger definitely had better material than the Ku girl, and I guess everyone knew it since Ku was challenged by I think 5 others.

That God's Pottery duo is either hit or miss, but those guys stayed in character throughout the whole thing. I wonder if they kept it up when the camera was off too. I'm guessing it was a miss with the crowd, since they had the lowest amount of votes.

Not that ANYONE cares!

wishbone 07-11-08 12:47 PM

Iliza has the goods to go pretty far -- and her standup is pretty solid too!

innocentfreak 07-11-08 04:22 PM

Iliza was definitely the best of the three and hope she stays around even just for the eye candy. I am a fan of Sean Cullen's from back in his Corky and the Juice Pig days so I will at least keep watching while he is on there.

Patman 07-12-08 08:49 AM

Thank goodness Iliza made it through, she's funny to me, reminds me of Tea Leoni in her "Flying Blind" days in the 90's. She sort of goes out of her way to not wear tight-fitting tops, but she'd be rocking in a bikini, as would Sean Cullen...

mdc3000 07-12-08 09:33 AM

I'm watching this season, but was pretty pissed that Dan Cummins didn't make the top 12... I don't think Ron G is that funny, so I'm surprised he made it...

Glad Ku and God's Pottery went home, Iliza was WAY funnier. My favourites so far are Sean Cullen, Jim Tavare and Paul Foot.

mrpayroll 07-13-08 12:03 AM

We lost the eye when Ku left. :(

But, she wasn't the funniest.

Chris

I TOTALLY agree. To me, Dan Cummins material was among the best (even though his delivery reminded me of another comic that I can't put my finger on - maybe Mitch Hedberg a little). He was way better than the guy who kept talking about "what stays in Vegas ... " I was really surprised he went on to the finals.

I think Ron G was on last year and went on to the final 10 where he was eliminated. I was surpised then as I am now that he went on at all.

I haven't watched Thurs episode yet, but it doesn't surpise me about God's Pottery. You can only take that act so far. I did think Ku might go on a little further. I thought she had better material than Iliza in the semi-finals, but her delivery was not quite as good. But I haven't watched the most recent episode.

What has surprised me is that many of the comics had really good material in the showcase or semi-final rounds, but when they went forward, their material was definately poorer. I guess they have a few really good bits, but when it comes down to it, they will never be a George Carlin or Mitch Hedberg.

I

You may be thinking of Ralph Harris.

So, during the Bed Bath & Beyond prop comedy immunity challenge last night, it was funny how most of the comics crapped all over prop comedy, even after most of them bombed. Carrot Top might not get a lot of respect from "real" comedians, but the guy sells out Vegas every night. And I think he's pretty funny. He definitely picked the right winner in that challenge, the fellow who used props to spoof movies.

Unfortunately, I dozed off toward the end. Who were the 3 on the line, and who stayed?

acubfaninmd 07-18-08 08:05 AM

^paul foot, papa cj, iliza

iliza stayed

Thanks.

She's going to be awful proud of herself, having knocked off 4 people.

Patman 07-18-08 08:36 AM

I was just hoping for more wet t-shirt action (mainly of Iliza) from the carwash sequence. Papa CJ just crapped the bed in the middle of his routine, and Paul was just too nervous and less likable, while Iliza is very relatable and likable, and performs with a good energy level.

Groucho 07-18-08 08:51 AM

I like Iliza. It's always refreshing to see a female comic that doesn't focus on relationships and periods. I'm not sure what Foot and CJ were thinking when they picked her, considering her performance last week.

She has good observational material -- especially for the young adult crowd -- and she is not afraid to interject physicality and voice work into her stand-up. Even if she does not win I think she will do well for herself.

Yes, Iliza is the only eye candy left since Esther Ku was eliminated last week. I'll be the first to admit her performances in both eliminations were clearly better than everyone else, but I'm not quite sure how I feel about her. I can't tell if it's the editing or her being the only girl in the house and having to face elimination twice, but there seems to be an undercurrent of insecurity and meanness when she's not performing.

I could see Papa CJ rehashing his material a mile away, but what happened in the middle of his routine. -eek- Also Paul Foot seemed like he completely lost it. He was actually my favorite comic of the three based on his dry humour during the Las Vegas auditions.

Barings 07-25-08 09:58 AM

Is this show pretty much dead in the water? Looks like the producers were smart to have double (and triple) eliminations each week.

I don't have an opinion on their routines since I'll watch over the weekend, but it looks like the voting may have closed shortly after the airing of the show.

mdc3000 07-25-08 10:06 AM

It's because of the Olympics that they sped up the format, no other reason.... I think on the 'reality' bits, Sean Cullen is easily the funniest, but on stage, he's in trouble. I love the Girls Next Door but think they should have picked Iliza - her joke about Cybergirl was hilarious...as a GND fan, I loved all her in references to playboy etc... I'm not sure who I'm rooting for right now, but I can't stand Ron G... he was sort of funny last night, but most of the time...not so much.

Patman 07-25-08 10:23 AM

Is Kendra sort of mentally deficient, her laugh was just strange.

Groucho 07-25-08 10:25 AM

Not an actual spoiler, but I put it in tags because there's a lot of white space:

Spoiler:
Iliza

Everybody else

Ron G

JasonF 07-25-08 11:22 AM

I like Iliza and Jim Tavare. Louis Ramey isn't bad -- I wouldn't go out of my way to see him, but if I were flipping channels and came across him doing a set, I'd watch. The impressionist guy would be killer if he had some jokes to go with his voices. The guy who looks like Jim from the Office has potential. Ron G, Sean Cullen, and Adam Hunter do absolutely nothing for me.

Agree totally. Ron G just stretches one-note jokes out... I can't even imagine how repetitive he would be in a half hour set. Whereas Iliza took a chance with untested material, but she had to... the tv voters wouldn't be very forgiving if she'd just repeated the same stuff she did the past two weeks. And her untested 'third-tier' stuff was still better than most of the other contestants' material.

I think Sean Cullen is hilarious offstage, but his humor just doesn't translate to a stage act. And I think eating up your whole routine with a song is a bad idea unless the song absolutely kills, which it didn't.

mrpayroll 07-25-08 04:30 PM

It's pretty sad what America accepts as funny these days. Each season seems to get worse and I haven't laughed much this season.

Maybe next year I will get smart and not watch until the finale. I really miss the comics from Season 1 and the format with us watching them live together and have fun.... at Dat Phans expense.

Of course he got the last laugh! :mad2:

None of those 3 were really pretty to me.

mdc3000 07-27-08 03:45 PM

Kendra's laugh kicks ass! Such a funny and obnoxious laugh...I love it.

Da Thrilla 07-28-08 12:40 AM

Ron G does suck quite a bit, Iliza keeps getting hotter and hotter to me as the weeks go by, and Sean Cullen is one goofy funny bastard. But as for the funniest for me has to be Marcus. You can't, not for a second, beat a Christopher Walken impression done to PERFECTION. I see it as it's his competition to lose.

Big Boy Laroux 07-28-08 11:26 AM

holy crap, i've been retelling that Louis Ramey joke about sex and honey for years. I saw a guy in Tunica, MS tell it exactly like that about 10 years ago. It very well could have been Louis Ramey, all I remember is that it was a black guy. He also told a pretty funny joke about what it would be like to be in the locker room with manute bol (using the microphone as a "prop"). That joke probably is dated now, but still funny. if ramey pulls that one out, I'll KNOW it's the same guy.

P.S. - loved the Iliza panty shot. :)

Charlie Goose 08-01-08 03:04 PM

So they went from 8 down to 5. Definitely got it right, they cut the three weakest comics, Ron G, Sean Cullen, & Adam Hunter.

However next week is the season finale, so from a group of 5, they'll announce the winner. That's kind of odd. I guess NBC didn't want to give them the 3 extra weeks. My prediction is the tattooed guy, but Iliza could pull it off too.

Patman 08-01-08 03:50 PM

The upcoming Olympics had a little something to do with the weird elimination schedule.

Vote-wise - It'll be between Marcus and Iliza, though the crowd was really into Iliza (she's just got a lot of momentum from her 2 wins in the showdowns).

Jim wasn't all that funny, but he's been funnier in past segments. Needed to use the bass more in his act last night.

Louis got long-winded and was losing my attention. He's a little too comfortable, and has lost an edginess to his performance.

Marcus was funny and can go many places with his impressions, but he doesn't use them as a crutch.

Jeff was semi-funny. He's trying to be original, but it's not polished material.

Iliza was usually funny (frat-house funny), but her pacing around the stage can get old.

--------

The Departed:

Ron thinks too much of his own material, numerous funny faces does not make an act entertaining.

Adam is a 1-2 punch joke teller (one setup line, one punchline, wash rinse, repeat), not much of a funny story teller. His comedic rhythm gets a little monotonous.

Sean Cullen is too full of himself to be considered entertaining. If he could clap for himself, he would.

wishbone 08-01-08 04:19 PM

Iliza's stand-up last night did not seem as strong as her past performances but I think she does have a good chance to win. It should be an interesting final. :)

mdc3000 08-01-08 11:24 PM

Marcus was stronger than usual, which surprised me. Jim was just OK. Jeff Dye was good but felt restrained. Louis was not funny. Iliza was OK but not up to her usual standards....I hope Marcus or Jeff take it...or Iliza.... anyone but Louis :)

My thoughts exactly. I hated his first performance where he kept repeating "What stays in Vegas...", but have enjoyed his talking heads.

This mostly mirrors my feelings. I do think Adam Hunter is better than most people give him credit for. If he had delivered the performance he did Thurs, last week, I think he may have stayed (at least for me).

Iliza and Marcus both have the best stage presence. I don't really think Iliza is that funny, but she commands the stage and has enough "acting out" to make her act interesting.

Marcus probably should have used his impressions. This is not the time to "prove you're more than impressions". It may prove his downfall.

Jim Tavarre has the best material. His delivery is good. That would be my choice to win, but I doubt he will.

Ron G and Sean Cullen deserved to be eliminated and Louis deserves to lose.

vaporware 08-02-08 03:28 PM

Mybe it wa just me but Iliza's boobs seemed to have grown since the start of the season.

mdc3000 08-02-08 05:10 PM

^It's called a waterbra, and they are very deceiving. She definitely looked STACKED at the final performance.

Big Boy Laroux 08-04-08 03:18 PM

Iliza was definitely not as funny this past week. I think this is Marcus' to lose. He is actually funny without the impressions...

I like Jeff Dye a lot. I don't think he'll win, but i love his delivery. And his "girls are called sluts, guys are called homosexuals" joke was hilarious.

I agreed with the top 5. Adam Hunter is good, but like someone said above, he is too repetitive in his delivery.

I don't know. I'm not willing to look up past season threads of LCS, but there's been at least 6 (?) episodes this season and this thread hasn't even broken 40 posts yet.

I agree that it will be 1-2 between these two, but I'm not sure who'll finish first. Iliza has built up a lot of goodwill being forced to perform three times, but I don't care for the manic energy and bar jokes that's she's been recently using.

He's actually my favorite since his sense of humour is so close to mine and I liked the "Who Am I?" game reference. I think NBC needs to write an episode of Chuck with him that would also double as an homage to Single White Female.

I like the deadpan delivery and the dry British wit. Hope he sticks around.

He's been absolutely horrible onstage with the songs, but I love his talking heads. His reference to Esther Ku and Dale Evans (being no longer with us) would be the main reason I would have kept him on.

I think he's been doing this longer than any of the others (except maybe Jim). It shows because his performance is too conventional. He looks and sounds like a guy who knows exactly how to get from point A to B safely or recover properly if a joke bombs. I'm pretty much indifferent to him.

I don't have anything against Adam, but the hate/voting directed against him in previous episodes could have equally been applied to Louis. Adam really needs to work on changing up his delivery and pacing to keep the audience interested.

I also agree Ron thinks too much of his material. I'll be happy if he leaves since I think he's full of himself. So is Sean, but he's an absurdist so it somehow seems more acceptable.

Charlie Goose 08-07-08 08:39 AM

Tonight is the night for the crowning of the NEW Last Comic Standing!

Can you feel the electricity? Can you hear the entire nation buzzing with anticipation?

Yeah, me neither. Let's watch anyway.
