American Idol, Top 6, April 22 / 23

Tuesday: 1 hour show, 7pm CDT.

Wednesday: 1 hour results show, 8pm CDT.

So… who do you think will be voted off on Wednesday? The mentor this week is Andrew Lloyd Webber - I'm not sure if they are doing his tunes or broadway tunes in general.

Neil Diamond will be releasing a new album on May 6th, "Home Before Dark". That will be the week of the Final 4, my guess is that he will mentor that week.

And sorry, you won't be able to vote for Kristi Lee Cook this week.

I think Brooke's time has come. It might actually be for her own good, she seems to be cracking under the pressure.

Tough call. Based on the theme, and the trends of recent weeks, I think that my girl Brooke is going home this week.

Let's pick some songs:

Syesha: She likes to tackle giants, so how about "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again"? Actually, that's not famous enough. Maybe "Memory". Then she can look shocked when compared to Paige (or Babs, knowing these judges).

Brooke: A few weeks ago, I'd have said "Only You" at the piano, complete with tears. But she's crumbling emotionally, so "Tell Me on a Sunday" should be perfectly dreadful.

Carly: "I Don't Know How to Love Him" seems in keeping with her song choices, but she'll have to do some lyric management. That's only because the producers won't let her sing "You Must Love Me" directly to Simon.

Castro: Gotta be "High Flying Adored" How about "Any Dream Will Do" with an outside shot at "Mr. Mistoffelees" ?

Giggles: The producers would love it if he closed the show with "Gethsemane", what with him being the Messiah and all, but I'll go with "Love Changes Everything". Sappy, obvious, useless.

Cook: Who knows? At this point, he could do "Mr. Mistoffelees" and get away with it. Something from "Superstar" makes the most sense, maybe "Heaven on Their Minds", but he's too savvy to go up there singing about Jesus. He's proven very arrogant and self-indulgent, though. Would he really go so far as to sing "Gethsemane"?

And for the group number tomorrow: "Light at the End of the Tunnel".

Jason and Brooke will have the most to overcome, as ALW's songs usually require big, full voices. Neither of them have that. But Jason is still emotionally stable at this point, whereas Brooke is a step away from being escorted into a padded room. I'm venturing that Ms. White will be celebrated home by Ruben Studdard on Wednesday night.

Spoiler:

David Cook - "Music of the Night" from Phantom
Brooke White - "You Must Love Me" from the Evita movie
Carly Smithson - "Jesus Christ Superstar"

I admit I'm curious how Cook is going to pull that song off.

I like Brooke, but I was hoping she wouldn't pick that f'n song

I thought David Cook was amazing and I'm not a big fan.

David A wasn't was great as they think he was.

Brooke needs to go home... for no other reason than for her well being.

Jason keeps singing the same song, over and over and over and over.

Jason's interview segment was one of the funniest things I've ever seen on the show. "I didn't know it was sung by a cat!"

Props to Archuleta for trying something different.

David Cook gave me the giggles, he was so good. And I hate that song.

Syesha ROCKED it and Carly made a wise choice.

Brooke has to go.

AI Producers: Sondheim '09?? Please???

I voted for Brooke to go home. This was the second time she's had to start a song a second time, and it's too late in the competition to get away with that type of mistake. Her lack of confidence and borderline nervous breakdowns ruin any emotional element she brings to her performance.

I think I just became a David Cook fan. I still wish his voice had more power to it, but that performance was still impressive. Not Broadway impressive, but I don't expect any of these guys to compare to Michael Crawford or Betty Buckley.

Thanks to Archuleta, I now know what Disney's cartoon version of Phantom would sound like.

Jeeez, what a snoozer of a show. This season just keeps getting worse. Dolly Parton, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Neli Diamond...way to keep your finger on the pulse of modern pop music, AI.

I am not a fan of Carly but I think she pulled that one off, and finally picked the right song. Of course, she didnt pick it, ALW told her to sing it.

Archuletta was predictable. I thought Sayesha was really good, but she lost the power in her voice at times. She brought it tonight though and I think she saved herself with her performance.

Jason picked a terrible song for him. I dont think it was horrible, it just wasnt that good. Brooke was worse though, and I think that was her swan song. I predict she is going home. She has peaked.

David Cook gave me chills. I thought he did that song amazing. I think it will be a David vs David final.

I would say Brooke should go, but Jason Castro's performance was perhaps the single worst performance sans Sanjaya I have seen on AI, so Im hoping its him.

Yeah, his voice was the only one that seemed to be able to clearly touch my ears.

I think Syesha will go home.

Brooke has to be toast tomorrow. Simon called it right - that was just uncomfortable. She's probably better off going home, since she looks to be teetering on the edge of an onscreen nervous breakdown. And as disjointed as Paula's comments can be, I tend to take her opinion on how to handle flubbing lines live more than Simon and Randy. Seeing as how she's the only one who had a career singing live, and all.

Syesha did great, doing a fun performance and showing cleavage again. She seemed to minimize the vocal runs, just letting the song flow normally.

Jason ... go figure, a song from a musical called "Cats" would be sung by a cat. Vocally, the worst of the night by a mile. I just think he has a bigger fan base than Brooke, so will pull it through. Anyone else notice the big gasps of breath he seemed to take between lines? I didn't notice that of him before, but it was really distracting (on top of the weak vocals).

David Archuleta takes a showtune and makes it sound like a drippy boring pop ballad, the likes of which you'd hear on a radio station advertising itself as playing "mellow hits of yesterday and today" and marketed for the 50+ age bracket. He sung it decently, but damn ... you couldn't force me to listen to this guy's debut CD.

ALW saved Carly's ass this week (and he seemed to do a really good job in with the mentoring). She sounded a bit out of sync with the background singers at time, but overall it was a strong performance. And a much better song choice than the ballad.

David Cook actually did a pretty decent "straight" version of "Music of the Night". I noticed he handled the lower registers better when not singing in his "rock" voice.

I'd rank them (best to worst): Syesha, Carly, David C, David A, Brooke, Jason. With a drop-off after Carly, and another gigantic drop-off after the Davids.

I thought Brooke was going to have a breakdown right on stage. That was definitely a train wreck and probably will end her time on the show unless she gets a ton of sympathy votes.

I thought Carly was best tonight.

Syesha Started off weak and uncertain, and then bam -- she found the tune, kept the energy, and owned that song.

at ALW's reaction to Castro singing "Memory". Did Jason even bother to look at the lyrics? I don't care that he has feline DNA; he's 21 years old. It makes no sense. Also, he sucked. Go away.

Kudos to ALW noticing what I've been complaining about for weeks with Brooke. She doesn't understand wtf she's singing about. I don't know why it didn't occur to me for her to sing this song earlier. It's perfect for her. Just like Eva Peron, she's dying. Everything she's built is crumbling before her, and she can't stop the inevitab -- whoa! Did she just reboot again? Ricky Minor's incredible. And she still doesn't get the song. In 7 seasons of this crapfest, I've never turned on a contestant like I have with Brooke. I went from adoring her to wanting to deliver a boron cowpunch to her kidneys. Can they eliminate two people this week? Please?

"Think of Me"? Seriously? This should be interesting. OK, there's no way in hell he had anything to do with that arrangement. The song's been completely rebuilt into a pop ballad and very professionally. When do we find out who created that version? Strange to see Simon not like it. David did exactly what Simon always wants: turn a classic song into a contemporary hit. Sure, it's a shitty ballad, but it would still be a hit. It will be playing in elevators for the next 50 years.

Two weeks in a row Carly's dressed appropriately. And I'm glad someone decided to sing this song. I figured they'd all run from it. Unfortunately, her vocals just aren't powerful enough to sell it. And she blew the lyrics. Still, I like that she had fun with it. I'm liking her more now that she's realized she's going to lose and is just having fun.

Phantom is a good choice for Cook. He needs a mask to hide that disfigured hairdo. I crowned him the winner of Season 7 last week, and I was right.

It's always hilarious to me when people say things like "they dont understand what they are singing about". That is one of the most moronic things to say, seeing that you have no idea what the person is thinking.
People choose to sing songs in all different ways. Some try to push the 'meaning' of the lyrics more. Some choose to find and exploit the melody, etc. etc. Having an opinion of the performance of the song is one thing, saying they have no idea what they are singing about is another.

After that, Brooke looks like she's going home. Probably for the best, as she seems on the verge of tears after every performance.
