Montel Williams calls it quits

Talk show ends production after 17 years

By CYNTHIA LITTLETON
Posted: Wed., Jan. 30, 2008, 12:46pm PT

Montel Williams is calling it a wrap after 17 years in daytime.

CBS TV Distribution confirmed Wednesday that it will end production on the syndicated yakker at the end of this season. CBS does plan to offer stations a "Best of Montel" package for the fall of '08 that will feature segs from throughout the show's run.

Fate of "The Montel Williams Show" was sealed when key Fox-owned stations opted not to renew it for the 2008-09 season. But a number of other stations had cleared the show for next season, prompting CBS to offer the "Best of" package. The rerun package is sold on an all-cash basis, which is a boon to stations who had been handing over three and a half minutes of barter ad time per seg to CBS for the first-run episodes.

"Stations continue to embrace Montel and the message of social responsibilty that has been the cornerstone of his show," said CBS TV Distribution prexy and chief operating officer.

Williams, a former military officer, launched his yakker in New york and a handful of other markets in 1991. Show was picked up for national distribution by Viacom the following year.

I had no idea his show was still on the air.

Does this mean he'll return to his roots, playing "Gordon" on Sesame Street?

Thank god.

The guy is disgusting for letting that fraud Sylvia Browne spew her lies and plug her products on a weekly basis.

I know for a fact a number of ex-military men had started writing letters saying they found him to be a disgrace as long as he promoted her.

What makes Sylvia Browne a fraud? Because you don't believe in psychics, or is there some sort of "evidence" out there that maybe I missed recently?

Do you have any "evidence" that there isn't a Santa Claus or a Tooth Fairy that maybe I missed?

Sylvia Browne is a disgusting waste of space who preys on peoples' grief to make a quick buck. You can find plenty of videos on YouTube of her getting busted.

Ehhh, it's your opinion. I'm not one to say whether or not she has true ability or not. She obviously has enough of a fan base and credibility with Montel, Larry King and others.

It's fine to have your thoughts, but unless you have some actual articles or investigations proving she's a flat out scam, best to keep your biased opinions to yourself on that one.

There's enough testimonials there from former Browne believers to, IMO, prove she's full of shit.

Sounds like some people here have sipped some of Browne's Kool-Aid...

That woman exploits the pain of others, giving either false hope or false despair.

Didn't she crush the hopes of some family by proclaiming their missing kid DEAD years ago only have the kid show up ALIVE recently(in the last year or so)?

I'm waiting for the day Maury opens the paternity results and instead finds divorce papers from Connie. That's the only way it should happen.

That was James Van Praagh, who said Shawn Hornbeck's body would be found in a railroad car. Hornbeck, of course, was discovered alive about a year ago.

If Syliva Browne was the real deal, she would have collecting a million bucks from James Randi a long time ago.

Because she claims to do something that is beyond the realm of possibility? She also charges for her "readings", which would make it fraud. If she did it for free, I would have no problem with her scam.

That bitch Browne has caused many families even more pain than they were suffering to begin with, telling them their loved ones are alive when they are dead,
vice-versa, useless information that prolongs the ability to have any closure, and no one with any sense should believe in her at all. The fact that people HERE are defending her...ugh.

Montel was pretty much the ONLY talkshow host that made shows that weren't absolute FILTH. He was a breath of fresh air amongst the many crappy "who's the father?" talkshows on TV.

It's pathetic that he goes off the air while trash like Maury stays on.

I use to watch Montel back in High School when this show 1st started. I'm amazed at his longevity, especially when he revealed over a decade ago that he had Multiple Sclerosis.

I think it's definitely time for him to do something else with his life.
