I know most High School coaches are also teachers, but I think Eric was hired solely to be the football coach.

Yeah, I think the assistant coaches have to teach (as we saw last year) but not the head coach. I was expecting them to come up with some ridiculous teaching assignment to get Coach more money, but the AD stuff is gold (who didn't see the angry woman's coach tirade coming once he took the AD job?).
As far as the kids not all hanging out together... they were pretty much in different cliques last year too, just came together after football games and after practice. So far, we haven't seen that much football, and I'm wondering if that was a conscious effort on the part of the creators to give the show more appeal.
I liked that Riggins didn't get an easy out with Coach. I also liked that he didn't just stop teaching the convict after Coach left the field.
To me, the whole Julie thing was a show-killer, and I'm actually happy to see her pining for Matt. Though Tyra seems to have changed a lot, the last thing I expected her to do to cheer her up was to offer to down a vat of ice cream and cry together.
Still no other underclassmen introduced, though we'll probably find out that convict's really a freshman or something.
