Can someone fill me in as to why Michael hates Toby? I don't remember what happened, and Toby seems like one of the less insolent people in the office.

He hates Toby because Toby is the HR guy and Michael is always over-the-top offensive. Obviously Toby has to side with the employees due to these gross violations of their civil rights, etc. This upsets Michael as he thinks Toby is doing it to spite him.

He's always hated Toby, it's not something that came out of a specific episode. However, there have been episodes where Toby has gotten in the way of Michael's plans, and Toby is also the guy in the office where complaints about Michael go.

Toby is HR and Michael has no authority over him. Generally when Michael has some absurd activity planned for the whole office, Toby has to be the buzzkill by pointing out any violations of policy.

The proverbial straw that broke the camel's back, was during "Casino Night" when Michael wanted to present a check to Boy Scouts, and Toby kept listing obvious reasons why inviting children to such an event was innapropriate.

Michael uttered the now classic line: "Toby, I hate so much about the things you choose to be."

Terrible episode but not really surprising since that Whedon hack directed it.

Jim started dialing for a cab, but then stopped when Michael said that he was going to miss out on the best prank ever. Jim cannot resist the allure of a good prank. However, he realized how poorly conceived Michael and Dwight's plan was, so the prankster had to assume the role of responsible party.

One interesting thing about Dwight is that he is alternatively industrious and committed to his work and, when it's a boys day out with Michael, a wild-eyed mad man.

Michael sees Toby as a 'party pooper'. Someone who won't allow any kind of fun and exciting ideas that Michael might come up with. Once you get the disdain between the characters, it becomes one of the more hilarious running gags of the show, IMO

Another great episode. I love to come in here each week and see all the bitching about how "it's not the same anymore!" and all of that. It's the same hilarious Office I've loved for four seasons now.

I love that people actually bother to "critique" every episode. I like that some of the smaller characters seem to be getting more time this season since the Jim and Pam will-they-or-won't-they plot is over (for now).

I know. I think people were watching previous seasons through rose colored glasses.

I can think of a dozen times when Michael has done something as crazy or stupid as he did in this episode.

Dwigt "de-volving"? Are you serious? He hasn't been a real person since the 1st season. Does anyone recall future Dwigt? Vampires? Jim's psychic powers? Countless other times?

I thought this was a good solid episode. Niether the best nor the worst. Does anyone know who directed it?

Nope, no one knows. It's a mystery.

Finally caught it on my DVR last night and I'm definitely in the "loved it" camp. Yes - it was over the top and there were several cringe-worthy moments, but that's the allure.

And I definitely like the 1/2 hour episodes over the 1 hour episodes (though I never would have thought I'd say that last year).

I was still cracking up an hour after it was over thinking about the penis/coke lid thing.

That is some sweet deleted scene action right there. Jim explaining why he has to go along on the prank and Pam mercilessly busting his balls really needed to be kept in. "I cut a chunk out of my penis for nothing."

Parents always freak out about crazy people giving their kids apples with razorblades hidden inside for Halloween. Those parents are idiots. If you’re getting a free razorblade inside your apple, you shouldn’t be complaining. And if you really want to impress me on Halloween, give me some licorice. That stuff hits the spot.


I think I beat my Halloween candy record this year. I’ve got six garbage bags full and that’s after I threw away all of the Smarties and hard candy. Before you go all crazy saying “Creed’s too old to be trick-or-treating,” let me tell you something: if you rat me out, I will come after you. This is the only time of the year where I’m in a disguise and people give me candy. Don’t ruin it.


When I trick-or-treat, I always wear a full facemask so nobody knows how old I am. This year I went as classic Montreal Canadiens hockey goalie Jacques Plante. You’re always good to go when you’re dressed as a famous former athlete. People revere athletes. They love giving them candy. To further get around the age issue, I pretended I was a deaf-mute version of Jacques Plante so nobody could hear my voice. That really made the difference. I carried around a note to explain the whole thing.


Dear Person,

Happy Halloween. I’m a deaf-mute, which is why I can’t say trick-or-treat. I still want your

dump 30 rock and give me 40 minute episdoes of earl, the office, and scrubs every thursday night and I'll be happy.

not only were those deleted scenes decently funny, they should have been included to show pam's jealousy. my wife even commented during the regular episode - "wow, most girls would be pretty jealous/angry about him seeing his ex".

Why should they dump their funniest Thursday night show?!!

Because it's their least funniest Thursday night show.

I don't care why he does, but Michael's hatred of Toby is one of the funniest things going on that show. When he saw him with that big bowtie and the delicate teacups, the look, the "Oh my...I have no words" as he walked away--just brilliant.

I find it important because it speaks to character motivation. Now I know why, but I think it's a flimsy excuse for such continuing and open hatred.

that's why it's funny.
