The Office -- "Branch Wars" -- 11/01/07

BRANCH WARS
9/8c TV14
11.01.2007

Spoiler:
BATTLE OF THE BRANCHES - RASHIDA JONES ("Boston Public") GUEST STARS - When Karen (guest star Rashida Jones) tries to woo Stanley (Leslie David Baker) away from Scranton, Michael (Golden Globe winner Steve Carell) fights back, dragging her ex, Jim (John Krasinski), into his war. Meanwhile, the existence of a "Finer Things Club" further disturbs Dunder Mifflin's calm.

A return. . . and perhaps a departure?

Dwigt/Michael: "We will burn Utica to the ground."

Jim: "I... will... " (turns, walks away)

Joss Whedon this week. Jason Reitman (Thank You For Smoking) last week. Again, I ask: where's Mike Judge?

Baffling.

Too much absurdity in this episode for me.

Loved this episode.

Didn't know that Joss directed this before I watched it but it doesn't surprise me. Joss delivers for the 2nd time (not that he deserves all the credit mind you).

Some of this ep was boring but the car scenes more than made up for it.

There was a certain something I really missed this episode.

Her name was Angela.

Aside from that issue, it seemed like a solid enough episode. I thought last week was much better, though.

Man, even I wanted to kill Michael and Dwigt this week. The stuff based in Scranton was decent, but I hated everything else. Why the crap didn't Jim just follow through with getting the cab?

what? the car stuff was great, Dwight cutting his penis on the pop can lid, the mustaches, Jim trying to hide, the walkie talkie stuff, Jim and Karen stuff. Just an AWESOME episode.

It was just the whole situation that pissed me off; I'm getting very sick of over-the-top Michael and Dwigt. I'm usually very forgiving of the show, but tonight their antics just didn't sit well with me.

Wasn't feeling this episode, although Michael running into Toby all propered up was hilarious. Dwight's moment in the car was too Dumb and Dumber-ish for me to find it real funny.

Anyone else refreshed by a tightly scripted half-hour episode after a flabby expanded 'Earl'?

Not a single Hallowe'en joke, though.

Huh.

Good to see Karen again.

It's idiocy overload when Michael and Dwigt are teamed up.

This show definitely works better in the 30 minute format.

Ugh... a lame episode. Michael, Dwight, and Jim disguised in mustaches to steal a copier from the Utica branch? Really? Are the scriptwriters raiding old Three Stooges episodes for ideas now?

I wish that they would stop trying to turn The Office into Arrested Development. That show was fine for what it was, but the tone and style of The Office is light years away from the style of comedy that AD mined for laughs. These types of plots that are built around extreme comic antics (often involving Michael and/or Dwight) are jarring and just plain do not work in the context of this show.

The genius of the comedy of this episode is that they stayed in the car with Jim on the walkie talkie while Michael and Dwight were trying to steal the copier. Much funnier than cutting back and forth or going to the copier scene at all. That would've been bad. Some over-the-top scenes like that need to be off-camera for the jokes to work.

Loved when Andy referred to Stanley as Uncle Remus. Not sure if Stanley was offended or just confused.

I don't think they said "Utica" enough. Holy cats! What a dangerous drinking game that would've been! Anyone want to do a count?

I'm not one of the usual complainers, but this episode was way too ridiculous & over the top for me.
