Anyone here concerned about the looming WGA strike?

You all may think there is enough entertainment medium to keep you occupied during a writer's strike and that's probably why most of you don't give a shit, but you also have to think about the economic ramifications for California, New York and other states that have TV/Movie Productions going on. That's hundreds of millions of dollars of lost revenues for all these states. Also, tons of crew members on all these productions will lose their jobs.

There's more to this than just the writers though. The DGA and SAG contracts are up in June 2008, so I'd be surprised if the WGA went on strike before that. If all 3 unions are able to collectively bargain, they're more likely to get what they want.

The even crazier thing is, if the strike does happen, and we end up with shortened seasons, you better believe we'll still be paying FULL price for the season set when it is released on DVD.
I really hope that a strike can be avoided. I want my entertainment, and I don't want to have to pay the same price I've been paying, for less of it.

The first victim of the potential strike: "Heroes Origins"... NBC has pulled the series from it's schedule and stopped production. While they havn't used the phrase "canceled" yet in any press releases, aparntly they make it clear the show won't happen for awhile.

Yup. If the strike happens it will have long term effects. I doubt that the strike will last till when SAG and DGA contracts expire. the last strike only lasted six months.
The real hard hit from all this will be the late night shows. Without writers Leno, David and TDS and Colbert will go black.
I feel for the writers, but as a below the line crew member I also feel for my wallet and paycheck. I think I can weather this storm for a while. I doubt I'll have to work on porn or anything. Though the idea that "MTV's Next" is a safe option seems just as bad as doing porn.
I think this will help all those working in the industry as the current residuals from DVD and internet media are just so poorly divided and the writers/producers really do get the ass end of all this. So something has to be done or else SAG and DGA members will just follow suit.
The strike bumped up from when they were originally going to strike in the summer was a smart move by them. It raised their barginning chips by a ton as Summer has light production schedules anyways for original content by writers.
Lets see what happens.

Frankly - it would be pretty sweet assuming repeats and reality fare coming during college hoops season. Then start everything up again in early April and run it through summer.

Advertisers say they will stick it out and keep their bought air time. But if this goes on for long and the viewerships of those reality shows starts dipping as there isn't any other options, then what will happen to those advertisers buck? Eventually, it will be felt.
Remember, Reality tv is good for a while, but these networks are also big studios and there's very little in terms of syndication money that can be made from a reality tv show opposed to an original content program when it comes to second run showings.

Obviously when dealing with the people effected by loss of work, I feel for them and hope this can come to a quick and fair resolution. However if for some reason I lost television and the movies I am pretty sure I would be fine. With books, the internet, sports, and most importantly my family in the grand scheme of it all it is not a big deal.
That is why if I was in the WGA I would be stressing the role that this strike will have on families and not that we will not be able to find out what happened on Lost until this is over.

WGA voted to strike tonight. They will strike as soon as Monday.

The sticking points are DVD/Internet residuals.

Considering the quality of most TV shows, it's hard to believe some of them have writers anyway.
I guess this will mean a whole lot of new reality shows.
First up: FOX's "Who Wants To Be A TV Writer?"

Well, I was complaining that I haven't even got around to watching a single episode of Dexter or Curb Your Enthusiasm this season, still have half a season of Big Love to get through, as well as the pile of shows on DVD I have to watch someday. And then there are the shows I'm been meaning to check out but never had the time. This isn't even counting movies and games... So it'll suck but there's at least a bit of a silver lining for me.

To me what the writers are asking isn't unreasonable at all. They said they want 8 cents per DVD unit sold as opposed to 3-5 cents. The studios nixed that idea and said it was unreasonable.
If this drags out, we're going to be getting 10-13 episode seasons.

Once the scripts dry up, then the season is over, which should be very soon. I believe most shows are probably getting ready to shoot episode 10 by now.

The WGA agreed to the lower number in part to help the studios support the format. Now it's time to pay up.
