2007 Primetime Emmy Nominations

A list of the nominations can be found here in several formats:

http://www.emmys.com/awards/2007pt/nominations.php

Reactions:

Pleasant surprises-
Rainn Wilson and Jenna Fischer for "The Office"
Rachel Griffiths and Sally Field for "Brothers & Sisters"
Michael Emerson & Terry O'Quinn for "LOST"

Not really surprises, but pleasant-
Steve Carrell and Alec Baldwin
Tina Fey and Mary-Louise Parker
30 Rock and The Office

Unpleasant surprises-
Keifer Sutherland somehow made it in for a dismal season of 24 over Michael C. Hall's brilliant portrayal of Dexter?!?
Jim w/o Pam (No nomination for John Krasinski?!?)

INCREDIBLY unpleasant surprises-
No LOST Best Drama, but Best Directing and Writing in a Drama (Yeah, that makes sense.)

And, perhaps the MOST pleasant surprise-
No Best Drama nomination for 24, in perhaps the worst season of television, ever. (And this is coming from someone COMPLETELY behind the 5th season Best Drama win.)

I was pleased to see Studio 60 get five noms.

I was not pleased to see the final episode of The Sopranos receive a Best Writing nom.

THE WIRE not getting nominations proves this award show is bullshit.

Heroes, Grey's Anatomy and Boston Legal for Best Drama but not Friday Night Lights or The Shield or Rescue Me or Deadwood or Rome or Lost.......?! Then no noms for Kyle Chandler nor Connie Britton?! You've got to be kidding me. The Emmys continue to be a total joke. Of course when you have it based on 1 episode out of a season, what should one expect.

Btwn the turnover in NBC mgmt, no major noms and the boomtown-like exile to Fridays, I really fear that FNL won't be with us much longer.

I was pleased to see the following happen:

Kevin Dillon for Entourage
Rainn Wilson for The Office

I was expecting Jenna to get nominated for The Office so that didn't surprise me. I was disappointed that John didn't get nominated.

Scrubs got 5 nominations, but no major ones. Boo!

Who exactly is watching Two and a Half Men? I've never seen a thread about it here, at Home Theater Forum or at Television With Out Pity. It can be funny, but I think it's pretty telling that the last new episode I watched, I changed it to watch a rerun of House instead!

I was surprised not to see Michael C. Hall nominated for Dexter.

I expect The Sopranos to take home Best Drama, thereby becoming the first drama series to take home the award after its' final episode aired.

I love how on Yahoo's front page, it says, "No love for Lost or 24." Is it even fair to compare the 2? 24 was so bad last season it was a joke, and they are making it sound like it got snubbed? I don't consider shitty shows not getting nominated a snub, I call it justice. Lost got snubbed.

Grey's Anatomy.
Heroes as best drama.
Charlie Sheen.
Emerson and Quinn.
No Rome, Deadwood, or Big Love?

Comedy side looks about right. Drama side is all messed up and extremely laughable - especially series. I could think of five shows that are much better than the ones listed. Thank God The Sopranos is over with. I'm tired of that show taking undeserved nominations (Bracco? Falco?). Especially in the writing category. One is fine. Three (almost) every year is not.

It was a mortal lock that Sopranos would get a lot of noms, so I resigned myself to that fact, but the continued nominations of Bracco who has a few lines each episode will never cease to perplex me.

They got some stuff right:

24's shutout in the Best Drama category. This isn't a shocker since Lost got shut out last year after a mediocre 2nd season following its Emmy-winning first season(they even poked fun at that in Conan's opening segment). And with 24 having an absolutely horrific 6th season, it had no business even sniffing a nomination.

Heroes' nomination for Best Drama. It had some weak acting performances and a lame finale, but overall it was one of last season's most exciting shows. And it's always a pleasant surprise when a genre series gets some love from Emmy voters(just ask Buffy or Battlestar Galactica fans).

Jenna Fischer for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy. Pam is a reserved, low key kind of character on a show known for having some pretty whacked out ones, so it's good to see Fischer wasn't overlooked for her performance. Either that or the Emmy voters just felt sorry for her after she broke her back.

Masi Oka for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama. This one isn't a shocker. Heroes was likely to get one token acting nod and it was either gonna be Oka or the dude who plays HRG. But it's still really cool to see him nominated.

Kevin Dillon for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy. Jeremy "Droz" Piven was a lock for this category, but the heart of Entourage is Johnny Drama. Somehow I don't see him standing at podium accepting the Emmy while exclaiming "VICTORY!!!".

They also got some stuff way wrong:

Grey's Anatomy for Best Drama. I realize the networks only submit an episode or two to the voters for each series, but how can the Emmy folks be THIS out of touch. Grey's Anatomy might not have had the dramatic dropoff in quality last season that 24 did, but it wasn't far behind. The only good drama coming out of Seattle Grace lately is Isaiah Washington calling T.R. Knight the "f-word". And the worst part of this nomination is.....

Friday Night Lights and Lost shutout of Best Drama. Friday Night Lights was the best network drama last season. I can think of only 2 reasons it failed to get the nomination. First, its ratings were dismal. Unlike the Oscars, success matters to the Emmy crowd. And secondly, it's about high school football in a small West Texas town. If ever there was a show that was doomed with the blue state elitist snobs that make up the Emmy voting bloc, it's this one. Lost had a helluva comeback season. I've been one of the show's biggest critics, but even I have to acknowledge that. Unfortunately the Emmy folks felt otherwise.

Connie Britton shutout of Best Actress in a Drama. Not only should she have been nominated for Friday Night Lights, she should've been a shoo-in for the award itself. I dare anyone to name me a better lead actress on a network or cable drama from last season. She ain't out there.

T.R. Knight and Katherine Heigl's Best Supporting acting nods. Considering they were paired up in one of the worst "romantic" subplots in recent memory, it's disheartening to see them rewarded for it. Knight's nomination could in part be due to sympathy from the voters due to the Washington "f-word" fallout. But what's their excuse for Heigl?

Tony Shalhoub for Best Actor in a Comedy. No, I have no problem with Shalhoub's work in Monk. But the voters seem obsessed with giving him the award, so this nomination likely means Steve Carell will go home empty-handed for the 2nd consecutive year.

The fact that Two and A Half Men, Dancing With the Stars (which I enjoy, but 8 nominations?), and a season of 24 that almost everyone panned each got more nominations than Friday Night Lights says all you need to know about this year's awards.

The list for "Outstanding Original Music And Lyrics" makes me wish they did live performances on the telecast like they do on the Oscars:

Family Guy - "Peter's Two Dads"
MADtv - "1209"
SNL - "Dick in a Box"
Scrubs - "Everyting Comes Down to Poo"
Scrubs - "Guy Love"

Oh I gotta say that the best thing about the Drama Categories is Minnie Driver is in for The Riches. I usually cannot stand her as an actress, but I loved her on that show. The worst thing about the drama categories is no Michael C. Hall. That category would have been awesome if he and Eddie Izzard were there.

It was fully eligible. And one of the five shows that, IMO, are better than the five nominated...

C.S.I. (was really good this year!)
Dexter
Friday Night Lights
The Shield
The Wire

I am not caught up with BG so I didn't consider it.

NO FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS?
It was completely SHUTOUT! NOT ONE FRICKIN nomination.
Not even a nod for the kid who plays Matt.

This show is too good for Television.

Keifer Sutherland? Are you kidding me? He performance was an exact repeat from the season before. He did nothing different. Grrrrrr.

I'm also ticked that Michael C. Hall was left out.

I haven't checked the obscure tech categories, but it got a directing nod for the pilot which was definitely deserved.

Thank you very much for saying that about Sutherland. You are exactly right. The writing didn't help, though.
