Not necessarily my favorite, but just to throw this out there, I thought that Delta House was really well done. The first episode was especially good. It likely couldn't help but suffer in comparison to the movie, though. All three networks had an Animal House-like series in 1979, and all were done before the end of the season.
Worthy of mention - The Waltons, preceded in theaters by Earl Hamner's Spencer's Mountain. The family name and location is changed, but basically the same setup.

I loved the movie, hated the TV show.
M*A*S*H the TV series to me at least is probally one of my top 50 (I can't narrow it down to 10 shows, its just to hard) TV shows of all-time.
It was smart, funny, sweet, brilliant & just about any other high praising word.
Alan Alda as Hawkeye Pierce is much better than Donald Sutherland's Hawkeye Pierce, In the TV show he made jokes and pulled pranks but at least they were you know-Funny, unlike DS's Hawkeye who was just a plain jackass who really needed a punch in the face.
The only thing good about that horrible Altman film is that the TV show used some of the props and whatnot in the early seasons of the show.

"The Magnificent Seven" was good while it lasted.
