What's relative to the viewer is how time passes on the island. The characters repeatedly update the audience on how many days have passed (Ben did so in "The Glass Ballerina", Sayid or Jack will usually mention it whenever they meet someone new, Juliet told Sun they'd been there for 90 days). What we aren't certain about is how the time passes on the island relative to the outside world.
