Also, is there anyone who watched a regular broadcast (non-HD. 5.1) who DID hear it?

The more I think of it, I think it came throug on my rear speakers.

I'll rewatch it, but I watched the HD w/5.1 and didnt notice any monster noises.

It seems like grasping at straws (or completely overanalyzing) to assume the 'monster' had anything to do with Nikki's death. We already had a perfectly good explanation for the resulting spider swarm (released pheremones) so I don't see why anyone is trying to create an alternative.

You can believe the monster was involved if you like, I'm pretty certain that you'll never get any closure one way or the other.

It is not "grasping at straws". Both things were thrown into the episode so we wouldn't know one way or the other. There are two alternatives that no one can prove right now.

I heard it on SD in prologic sound. I just don't think it really meant anything important since the spiders were already explained by Artz.

But I don't watch the show to analyze every little thing either.

boogieman03 03-29-07 02:22 PM

By the way, youtube has part of the premier episode. I'm rewatching it now.

I watched this twice in HD through my 6.1 650Wt system using both HDMI audio and digital fiberoptic, and both times I thought you people were out of your frackin' mind. There's no monster audio. It's the sound of other animals peacing the hell out of that area because hundreds of venomous spiders were now making their way there.

It's likely that Paulo covered it himself after he left (FWIW, I don't think the plane had fallen off the cliff yet when Paulo was stashing the diamonds; that probably happened later).

Finally, the cover on The Swan had a window on it (remember Locke pounding on it and a giant beam of light shining out?) The doors on The Pearl had no windows, much like the doors we saw Nikki and Paulo open.

Anyway, fun episode. I love this show.

Ahhh. You are right. I don't know what I was thinking. It's been so long since I saw the first season I could have sworn the plane was at the first hatch location. Oh well.

Around the same time in the episode that Artz explained the spiders to Nikki, Paulo and Nikki had already discussed if there was really a monster on the island. That was on the first day of the crash. Both things were talked about early in the episode and both showed up during that end scene. Coincidence?

Nikki definitely looked around after hearing smokeys noise. One theory is that Smokey just distracted her for the spiders to get into place.

i definitely enjoyed this episode. Felt like ender's game/shadow with the whole same events through different perspective mixed a twilight zone ending. sad to see nikki go though. why do all the hotties die?!?

i didn't feel like it was a filler episode at all, just another great episode in a great tv series.

Go to ABC.com. Watch at 39:39 in the show. Nikki looks around while the sound is heard. It is Smokey's noise.

Could somebody go back and watch it with the closed captions turned out? The text that describes the noise might help us decide.

[spiders crawling noise]

sinister 03-29-07 02:47 PM

I think the monster sent the spiders because it judged her, ala ecko. All she cared about was the diamonds and not the love of paulo. while paulo didn't care about the diamonds because he thought once she had them he would get dumped. why would the spiders go after her. the insinuation of the spiders from Artz was what the monster used. the monster uses a person's fear as a tool. nikki thought it was the pheromones but it obviously wasn't, just the monster using her fear to judge and kill her.

Big Boy Laroux 03-29-07 02:48 PM

I watched it live in HD with surround and DID NOT hear the monster noise. After i read on here that some had, I went back and watched my TiVo recording (not surround sound) and DID hear the noise. it was definitely smokey's noise.

I have a feeling the monster noise was just there since the monster was discussed.

Could it have something more to it down road? Possibly, but I doubt it. It's just a filler ep, but the writers are clearly making this shit up as they go so who knows.

As for distraction. They're tiny spiders, its not like it was a polar bear that needs distraction to sneak up on her.

Meglos 03-29-07 03:03 PM

The monster noise was definitely there. But, as a previous poster suggested, I think it was just a red herring.

As an audience member, you hear the noise and think,"Aha! This is where Smokey gets Nikki and throws her around like a rag doll!", and then you're totally caught off guard when that turns out not to be the case.

DthRdrX 03-29-07 03:11 PM

I'm not sure if it was a filler episode or not.

There are numerous things that were shown that may or may not be important with regards to the timeline. I'd have to go back to previous episodes to check some of this stuff. Keep in mind that Nikki and Paulo never showed up until after the Swan inccident.

First, we have the Mcguffin of the episode, the black bag they were looking for. Is that the same black bag found with Adam and Eve in season 1? I can't find any screencaps to compare the two. They definitely said this would addressed again with regards to Adam and Eve having a story behind them all along.

Also, Look at what was posted over on the fuselage.com. Look at the title and the date of the paper Nikki was reading at the airport. "This Life - Thursday, September 24th, 2004". Keep in mind the plane departed on Wednesday, September 22nd, 2004 at 14:55. I'd guess it was an error but no way would they label the paper "This Life" and make an error like that. Also, look up Sept 24th, 2004. It's actually a Friday!

I'd look around too. I'd be thinking, "where the hell are all the animals going to and why?"

Josh H 03-29-07 03:38 PM

Jesus. And I though the chess argument a couple weeks ago was one of the lamest internet nerd debates I'd seen in recent memory.

Time for a hearing check-up then! :)

There are no visible animals in the area.

The best thing about this episode was that it is the first I got to see in HD.:hump:

Spend a lot of time in jungles, do ya? for every one you see you hear 50. I feel so stupid even having this ridiculous argument. It's a stupid filler episode that will have absolutely no effect on the rest of the series. So you know what? Fine, it was the smoke monester. The invisisaurus rex turned into a bunch of little male spiders and bit her, knowing that it would paralize her and that her friends would bury her alive, because ol' smokey has a twisted sense of irony. It's also responsible for the exploding submarine, Desmond's visions, and Hurly's inability to lose weight. It's also the chess board, the ping pong table and Vincent, the dog. You win, the smoke monster is everywhere and responsible for everything.

Bout time you came around!

Josh, nothing tops the chess argument. Even I steared clear of that, for the most part. :)

At least we're not that bad, DthRdrx. Although saying that we're not as bad for our argument when compared to the chess argument is like saying, "Well we're not as bad as THAT Star Wars geek... I only have ONE X-wing replica in my room and I don't even OWN a light saber."

Down the hole is down the hole, and I feel like I should have GEEK permastamped on my forhead for at least a month for arguing so furiously that "NO! The spiders were NOT the SMOKE MONSTER!"
