Overall not the greatest, and certainly no other show out there makes me cringe so much. I did enjoy how Kevin went from talking about the lost uncle, "It's a very serious situation," to immediately kicking out "ROXANNE!"

Anyone else catch that Michael's definition (straight from Webster's) of "wedding" was actually the definition of "welding."

Yes. I was expecting Bob Vance, Vance Refrigeration to call him out on that.

When he started it, I thought that it would be the definition of "weeding", like Homer did on the Simpsons.

The trouble is, he can't turn it off when he's outside the office. He tries to be the go-to person he is in the office, even though he shouldn't. When he gets shot down, he over compensates by making it worse. I don't see it as Homer Simpson-type slapstick. It's social awkwardness taken to the extreme.
Exactly what I was going to post. The way he was acting at the wedding is not at all out of character for who he is: an insecure man who is still getting over his adolescent awkwardness. Take another look at the Booze Cruise episode and you'll see the same sort of behavior; he couldn't stand that the captain of the boat was going to be running things that evening, so he tried to step in and be the center of attention again, and got shot down again.

I thought one of the funniest moments was the look of joy on Michael's face the first time he shouted "Ladies and Gentleman, and now for the first time, Bob and Phyllis Vance" or whatever he said.

Yes I did. It took me a few seconds, but I figured it out once I noticed the red bowtie.

That is absolutely not true. Michael has never ever been close to having an internal 'is this ok?' test.
No way. He's an attention craving baby - which makes him kind of an asshole.

He was totally in character the whole episode.

I'm was all about the home video of Michael at his mother's wedding. Who would yell at a kid for pissing himself? It's no wonder he's so screwed up.

A total asshole, which made watching his buffoonery this episode a bit too tedious for me.

But it also made me love Dwight's smile to the camera after he threw him out.

So I guess that's what I like about The (US) Office: the reactions to Michael Scott rather than the character himself on display.

Spoiler:
• Boston Legal's Mark Valley is one of the two leads in NBC's Business Class, playing a charismatic and thoroughly amoral traveling salesman. Legal partner Craig Bierko, meanwhile, is a newly single guy in the Fox comedy The Rules of Starting Over, which also stars The Office's Rashida Jones as a lawyer looking for a decent fella. Um, Jim Halpert?!
Son of a BITCH! I hate spoilers but had to read to see if it was her and it is... That pisses me off. They keep that Andy but rid of her. This is crap!

When the old man got up and walked I thought they were going to have Michael piss himself or something. Now that would have been funnier than him banging the wheelchair down the aisle.

Yeah but that was a night out on a booze cruise where the group took up a good portion of the passengers this was someone's wedding. I can't believe anyone being as annoying as Michael was at a real wedding. This isn't the first time that I have felt this way though. Maybe it is one particular writer.

kind of unrealistic that she would invite everyone from her office to the wedding, especially people that dislike her like Angela.

Well, thanks a heap. I also hate spoilers, but your use of pronouns and context clues screams the answer.

It's a relatively small office, I think it's pretty realistic that they all got invites. Remember when Pam was making invitations for her wedding she wasn't going to invite Angela but ended up doing it anyways after Angela commented that she hadn't gotten one.

I don't understand this sentence. This isn't a show about real people in real situations; they are caricatures in invented situations. Comparing what Michael did to what a real person would do is just silly, because he's not a real person in a real situation.

Michael's long term character development depends upon believability. For the most part, he has to behave like a normal person as a setup for his outlandish moments. When too many insane moments are strung together, it waters down the comedic impact and makes some viewers (me) wonder why anyone would invite him anywhere. Once this happens the viewer is distracted and pulled out of the show.

Same thing with Dwigt. Last episode, when he questioned whether Ben Franklin really was alive, it pulled the viewer out of the show, wondering "How could someone think Ben Franklin is alive?". Poor writing in an otherwise brilliant show. Hey, no show is perfect.

But there are essences of a real character in his outlandish moments; there is a reason why he was acting the way he did at the Booze Cruise and now at the wedding, and the reasons are all based around how his character has been developed over the previous seasons. I'm always surprised after these types of episodes on the amount of comments to the effect of "it was completely out of character" or "too weird" etc. None of these characters, as far as I've seen, have acted out of character from how they've been setup previously. They haven't magically been given a new skill or loads of money or anything like that; it has all been organic to the progression of the show.

I think these types of shows (faux documentary) have a difficult line to walk, because they still need to bring the laughs but they also need to be based somewhat in reality, which isn't nearly this funny all the time. Sometimes the show wanders too far over the "silly" side of the line in order to get the laughs, but for me, if the silliness is true to the essence of the existing character, then it isn't necessarily poor or lazy writing.

I think a lot of it has to do with one's viewpoint while watching the show; I never watch the show believing these are real people with real problems. They have problems similar to real people, but they are just characters and problems manufactured by the writers. But the characters still need to have caricature-ish qualities in order to function as a comedy, otherwise it becomes a melodrama and something better suited for day time soap operas.

I can never get too much of Michael's antics and "left field" observations.

There is a difference between the the Booze Cruise episode and the Wedding. The BC was Michael's party and the Wedding was not. The BC was informal, the wedding was not. One blunder, maybe two, but 3+ huge blunders in a matter of minutes at a formal wedding. That is over the top ... even for Michael.

The real problem is that it pulls the viewer out for a moment to say WTF! is wrong with him. Showing a little restraint (as in the BC), allows us time to recuperate and set us up for the next joke.

I also loved the way he kept repeating "My name is Michael Scott" during the speech. And then stating that he would be up there entertaining them for the next 40 minutes.
