Overall not the greatest, and certainly no other show out there makes me cringe so much. I did enjoy how Kevin went from talking about the lost uncle, "It's a very serious situation," to immediately kicking out "ROXANNE!"

The trouble is, he can't turn it off when he's outside the office. He tries to be the go-to person he is in the office, even though he shouldn't. When he gets shot down, he over compensates by making it worse. I don't see it as Homer Simpson-type slapstick. It's social awkwardness taken to the extreme.

I thought one of the funniest moments was the look of joy on Michael's face the first time he shouted "Ladies and Gentleman, and now for the first time, Bob and Phyllis Vance" or whatever he said.

No way. He's an attention craving baby - which makes him kind of an asshole.
He was totally in character the whole episode.

But it also made me love Dwight's smile to the camera after he threw him out.
So I guess that's what I like about The (US) Office: the reactions to Michael Scott rather than the character himself on display.

When the old man got up and walked I thought they were going to have Michael piss himself or something. Now that would have been funnier than him banging the wheelchair down the aisle.

Take another look at the Booze Cruise episode and you'll see the same sort of behavior; he couldn't stand that the captain of the boat was going to be running things that evening, so he tried to step in and be the center of attention again, and got shot down again.

It's a relatively small office, I think it's pretty realistic that they all got invites. Remember when Pam was making invitations for her wedding she wasn't going to invite Angela but ended up doing it anyways after Angela commented that she hadn't gotten one.

Same thing with Dwigt. Last episode, when he questioned whether Ben Franklin really was alive, it pulled the viewer out of the show, wondering "How could someone think Ben Franklin is alive?". Poor writing in an otherwise brilliant show. Hey, no show is perfect.

Once this happens the viewer is distracted and pulled out of the show.

I think these types of shows (faux documentary) have a difficult line to walk, because they still need to bring the laughs but they also need to be based somewhat in reality, which isn't nearly this funny all the time. Sometimes the show wanders too far over the "silly" side of the line in order to get the laughs, but for me, if the silliness is true to the essence of the existing character, then it isn't necessarily poor or lazy writing.
I think a lot of it has to do with one's viewpoint while watching the show; I never watch the show believing these are real people with real problems. They have problems similar to real people, but they are just characters and problems manufactured by the writers. But the characters still need to have caricature-ish qualities in order to function as a comedy, otherwise it becomes a melodrama and something better suited for day time soap operas.

The real problem is that it pulls the viewer out for a moment to say WTF! is wrong with him. Showing a little restraint (as in the BC), allows us time to recuperate and set us up for the next joke.

I also loved the way he kept repeating "My name is Michael Scott" during the speech. And then stating that he would be up there entertaining them for the next 40 minutes.
