O.K. Did he actually think, if he got cut loose, they'd let him leave with show props ???? (the compass) ...must have been a mad scientist!

I actually kind of enjoyed the basic concept of the show, but having the contestants dress in pirate clothes and such heavy emphasis on the pirate tie-ins distracted from what could have been more interesting.

Especially when the host comes on...he looks and sounds like he's part of a different show completely.

The guy who was sent to sea was pretty crazy and it seemed like he was in his own world. But the guy who was captain sure seemed drunk with power.

It was sort of like Big Brother except on a pirate ship.

Is there such a thing as a scripted reality show?

Somehow it was better AND worse than I expected. Basically Survivor on a ship, with a big chunk of Big Brother and more elaborate challenges.

A fundamental problem with this show is that the captain is just going to sit and collect money for doing nothing, the crew will eventually get pissed that he's collected too much, a new captain will be put in his place, and the cycle will keep repeating. Unless the captain is generous and gives away a lot of his money, in which case what's the point? The first mates have the best deal IMO.

The bigger problem for me is that reality shows that go for a "make believe world" gimmick (Murder in Small Town X from many years ago was another) rely too much on a level of artifice to sell the gimmick, but that in turn takes away from the reality aspect. It's like some of the people act like they are in a reenactment or pirate improv or something, while the other half are just being themselves and playing the game but not *really* playing along with all the pirate silliness.

I tried watching a couple of minutes and couldn't get hooked. My wife watched the whole thing and said it was just OK. I've seen every season of Survivor and TAR, but this one doesn't do anything for me. Watching LeBron James score the last 25 points of the game last night was much more interesting so I watched that instead.

Ever see "The Simple Life", or that "Rob and Amber" one? Rob just so happens to decide, on the very day that the camera crew arrives at his house, that he's gonna try and become a professional poker player! What a coincidence! Hang on for the wackiness!

Even ones that are unscripted are still fake as hell. They do multiple takes of things to get them filmed just right.

Thats why I tend to like shows that deal more with the game than the drama. I'm a big fan of Amazing Race, for instance. Sure there is drama, but for the most part, the game is the centerpiece. I even still like The Apprentice because of this as well (the tasks, at least). Talent competitions are also nice.

Early Real World (first 3-4 seasons) were also pretty cool because people weren't acting for the camera.

So for whatever reason, I just watched this. Tonight's episode was basically a carbon copy of last week. Not particularly engaging. And now that Okoye is off, there's 1 less person I like on there.

What was with the Blonde that they had to blur her chest for most of the Snake pit? You would think she would notice, or one of the other women would tell her, that her nipples were showing pretty quickly but she was blurred for a long time.

Next why do they keep saving Joy when she obviously isn't up to the challenges? She kep throwing up on the first show and she hurt her knee on this one.

Well, after two weeks it's time to say goodbye to this show. There's a lot of potential with the whole pirate theme but if they're just going to do the exact same things each week then I don't see the point. Plus, could they have found a bigger group of people with no TV personality whatsoever?

I did like the twist that if the other crew won they would elect a new captain. But none of the game strategy does any good if the crew are too chicken to go against the captain. That's two weeks in a row that the crew voted out the person who called for the mutiny. Last week I understood, but now?

2 questions:

1) do people get to keep any money they earn, even if they leave or get kicked off? or do they have to win at the end to keep money?

2) are the only time they are split into teams is during expeditions? after that they are all basically one big group?

The Futon Critic reports:

[06.08.07 - 12:51 PM]
'BIG BROTHER' TO RETURN TO USUAL NIGHTS, 'PIRATE MASTER' TO WALK TUESDAY PLANK
By The Futon Critic Staff (TFC)

LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- CBS has confirmed its rollout schedule for "Big Brother" while newcomer "Pirate Master" is being sent to Tuesday nights.

"Brother" will launch its eighth season on Thursday, July 5 at 8:00/7:00c with its Sunday and Tuesday editions due on July 8 at 8:00/7:00c and July 10 at 9:00/8:00c, respectively.

Said installments mirror its broadcast schedule from last summer, save for Tuesday nights where it aired at 8:00/7:00c instead of 9:00/8:00c.

As for "Pirate Master," the show's sixth episode will follow "Big Brother" at 9:00/8:00c on July 5 before it settles into its new Tuesday, 10:00/9:00c home on July 10.

I dropped it also. The second episode bored me to tears.

Has everyone given up on this show? It certainly is worse than Survivor, but I enjoy seeing the ship. I actually saw the Picton Castle motoring from the St Clair River into Lake Huron, last summer while on a boat trip. It's hull was painted white then; it was on its way to some "tall ship" event. It also is used as a sail training ship

For the show, it has been completely repainted and some falsework built on the stern to look more "piratey."

The red crew won this week, and elected a new captain.

Alright , I have 2 episodes sitting on the DVR. I sat through the series premiere and it really didn't thrill me like Survivor. Should I stick with it or dump it?

I thought the captain Joe Don was an arrogant prick and that stupid captain hat inflated his ego.

I tried, I really did, but I just couldn't stick with this one. I didn't see the most recent ep and seriously doubt I'll watch any more.

It's just got to a point where the show wasn't nearly good enough to have grown people acting so silly. It's hard to believe the grown men and women could look at the camera and with a straight face utter lines like "She has a lot of heart but I'm not sure she's got what it takes to be a pirate" or "I came here to be the best pirate I can be."

And then how inflated that guy's ego got when he put on that silly little pirate hat. I think the show had some potential, but this isn't a play group. I don't think you should want these people to actually think they are pirates. No one on Survivor ever became convinced they were really Robinson Crusoe.

And for me to drop a show like this in the summer, when I'm so very desperate for TV shows to watch, just shows how laughable this one is.

I watch this show because it is just so bad that its great. The cheesiness of everything involved just adds to that charm. Plus, the strategery involved in bribes does interest me a little.

The third episode was actually pretty funny:

Spoiler:
The new captain gains a british accent the moment he puts on the captain's hat. No real explanation, but I think he is having fun with how goofy this show is.

I'm currently watching for the cheese factor.

I've been watching this as a summer Survivor replacement. It is certainly cheesy, but not unwatchable. The money aspect lends an interesting spin to what would otherwise be a clone of survivor.

Regarding the current strategy:
Spoiler:
Unfortunately the current trio in power hit early on the formula for winning at least in the short term. With the three strongest players always on the same team, they will stay in power for the foreseeable future. Between the random teams and the complete control the captain has over work and food, the crew does not really have a chance to usurp him.

The mutiny requires that the crew and officers all vote against the captain. All the captain has to do is keep at least one of his two officers happy and he'll stay in power.
