ok vaguely remember it mainly since I had a figure of one. 3 guys each was a rescuer of sort each being a different area (air, sea, land). They would have machines become part of them.

That wasn't Captain PLanet and the Planeteers was it?

I think the reason Transformer and GI Joe are still so fondly remembered are because their toy lines were so much more popular... in fact, both still exist today, despite brief hiatuses, as both toys and cartoons.

I was really surprised that they put C.O.P.S. on DVD... I didn't think it was that popular, though I loved the Bart Sears designs.

The 80's certainly seemed like the era of the cartoon-made-to-sell-toys. Heck, the only reason I remember most of them are because I had a few of the toys or comics as a kid. I used to love the little advertisements in comic books advertising the new cartoon lineup.

I don't think anyone has mentioned Visionaries (with their "animal totems" that they could turn into) or the Mighty Orbots, which did not have a toy line but was heavily based off of the Japanese Godmars show.

I'm actually kinda surprised so many people mentioned the Spiral Zone. That was on so early in the morning, but I loved that show as a kid, and the toys (well, ok, they're really dolls) were spectacular. I also think the guy who mentioned a cartoon where their backpacks became vehicles was remembering this show.

I kinda liked Robotics as well, even though the toys were more really expensive... it frustrated me, though, as it started off this era of combining two ~15 minute cartoons into one half hour... though eventually Inhumanoids and Jem would come out of that as well.

Wow! It took a bit to jog my memory about M.A.S.K. I checked out one of the sites that showed the toys and noticed I had a fair amount of the first run of toys.

I vaguely remembered some mechanical dinosaur show as well as the monster trucks (big foot and organe blossom) being in rotation with Jem.

Z.O.I.D.S. and Bigfoot Monster Truck Power Hour (or something like that)

Nah, the ZOIDS cartoon came much later. The robotic dinosaurs were Robotix, and the Big Foot one was, well, Big Foot (and the monster machines), all three (with Jem) were jammed into one half hour. Later, they mixed and matched and added Inhumanoids.

That's a lot of shows, though... including Transformers and Thundercats.

How could I forget Galtar and the Golden Lance and Hulk Hogan's Rocking Wrestling (though I thought it was late 70's). And Tranzor Z (mazinger Z)? Unfortunately, most of the links are dead as the site is being "worked on" but it was fun to go through the list of names anyway.
