Chase is really getting the shaft as a character on this show. Everyone else has had some major character developments since the show started (even Cuddy had her contractor injury episode), but Chase gets little more than "my Dad and I don't get along" story. Now they basically wrote him completely out of an episode!

Well there is definitely something potentially chemically unbalanced about his behavior. He's smacking that nicotine gum like his life depended on it. Halfway through this episode I found myself shouting "GO SMOKE A PACK ALREADY!" at him.

The cop is so unlikeable that the payoff when House eventually gets his back will be huge !

Good episode otherwise

The cop is very devious, but I think House really is just getting his due. Even though it was technically ok, he really violated (not sexually) the guy. They both are very wrong, but House really just met his match. The cop is abusing his power, but House pretty much does the same thing.

Makes for fun tv.

House abusing his power, for example, with the thermometer thing, isn't a legal issue, it's a lawsuit issue.

The cop however, abusing his power, can be a legal issue if taken to a certain point. That can result in court orders against the cop, harassment, etc. The cop can do a lot within his power, but he can reach a point where he LEGALLY steps over the line and be subject to the law himself.

Fair enough. To be fair, House usually just comes across as bitter, grumpy, and short with his patients. Nothing terribly wrong with that. The thermometer incident was one of the few times I actively disliked House's antics and was glad to see this guy "fight back".

True... I wasn't saying what House did was right either... just that the two's antics are/can be operating on different levels of punishment.

The problem with the cop's actions is that he's abusing his police authority to correct a rudeness problem. In the grand scheme of things, that's just stupid. Plus, after the verbal sparring didn't go his way, the cop did trip House's cane (and House could have lost an eye from the coat hook on the back of the door when he caught himself from having his face bashed into the door, I checked the footage). It was only after the cop went "physical" in his response that House "acquiesced" in the request for a more thorough exam.

House might have abused his medical authority, but he did state (true or not, I have no idea) that the chewing of nicotine gum could have an effect with an oral temp reading, thus the ironic use of the rectal thermometer since the cop was being a pain in the ass for House.

Y'know, I never really thought of it that way. It would be like House not curing someone because they pissed him off. He may not pity or even care about his patient, viewing their cases more like puzzles, but he does still actively try to "fix" everyone.

The actual medical part of the episode was terrible. I didn't enjoy that at all. The rest of it was decent. Definately not one of my favorite episodes.

When is Morrison going to get rid of her helmet? Damn that drives me nuts. I do like how she's stepping up, though.

I wouldn't imagine that is far from the truth. Gum chewing has been proven lead to increased heart rate... so exercising your jaw could have some kind of effect on your mouth's temperature.

Yeah I think this would be true; one of the byproducts of muscle activity is heat (part of why we sweat on exercise), and the muscles of the jaw, tongue and throat are pretty active when chewing gum so the mouth's temperature should go up a bit..

I thought this episode was alright, i wish they went a bit further into that debate about the ethics of treating willingly overweight patients. Tomorrow's episode looks pretty interesting as well... I didn't know you could wake someone up from a coma temporarily and have them walking around and acting completely normal.

In the the episode the cop first appeared he kicks House's cane out from under him causing House to trip and fall into the door. That's Assault, hitting, breaking, or taking a disabled person's assistive device can break many laws, and as a cop he should know this, I think the writers probably didn't realize that or something. Then there's the arrest, some of that the cop fabricated, IRL the cop would have a camera documenting it which would get himself fired for the bs arrest and violating House's rights by lying about the reasons to search him.

I've been waiting almost 20 years to get that cleared up. Thanks
