My best guess with the father is that he's working for the government and that they're trying to maintain the status quo. I'd call him a grey actor, though he may end up being the enemy in the future if we go to some sort of Sentinel storyline in subsequent years.

I just got caught up on the first 5 episodes in time for tomorrow night, and so far I'm loving it. I was skeptical at first, but once I heard all the praise and that it was popular enough that NBC had picked up a full season (nothing's worse that getting emotionally invested in a show that gets canceled in less than 10 episodes) I decided to check it out, and I'm glad I did.
I think they've got a pretty solid cast of characters built up, but Hiro & Ando are awesome enough to have a show just about them. I loved the part on the train where Hiro showed up, and he was this badass samurai from the future.

I just finished watching Season 1 on DVD and the only thing that bothered me was that Nathan was able to actvate his power with The Haitian around him. I thought that one of the Haitian's power was to nullify any other being with power around him. That's why Parkman can't read thoughts and Hiro can't time travel when he is around. but the first time we see Nathan use his power of flight is in front of the Haitian. Was this a goof or did I missed something?
Other than that, Heroes is a great show.

You're assuming that the Haitian's powers are on 24/7. But I see no reason at all to assume that. It seems reasonable to me that it's a power he has to intentionally activate. Like all the other heroes.

After the future episode the way I took this is that if you are strong enough in your powers you can overcome the Haitian.
I came to this conclusion after Future Hiro said he wasn't strong enough to break into the building to get...himself. He needed Peter to pull it off. Future Peter was just badass with his power, and maybe he might've struggled a little bit but could overcome the Haitian.
I also believe this because even though they didn't know Nathan's power, they knew he could do something. I think the Haitian's powers were on but Nathan had a 'Oh Shit' moment just took off. HRG & the Haitian were looking like 'damn'.
But, it could be Future Hiro wanted Peter for a good distraction...I don't know.

Well, some heroes clearly have their power on 24/7. Otherwise Peter would never be able to absorb anything. Everything he's picked up so far has just happened by magic without any intervention on his part. Clair's power also seems to just be on by default. I would say Parkman may also fall into this category.
On the other hand, you have someone like DL. You could sneak up behind him, shoot him and kill him. But if he sees you coming, he can turn on his power and your bullet would pass right through him. He has to consciously use his power. As does Hiro, Nathan and Molly.
I think the Haitian falls into the second category. He has to be consciously using his power or else it has no effect. It's turned off if you will.
Of course this is nothing more than a rationalization. It was probably a plot hole that was never given serious thought.

I think the Haitian clearly has one of the most interesting (sets of?) powers. He can apparently:
1) Block mind reading
2) Suppress powers (which may or may not be how #1 works)
3) Wipe out memories
He clearly has to be trying to wipe memories -- people don't just naturally forget seeing him as though he's one of the men in black. It appears that in order to suppress powers, he also has to do something, which is clearly what they were trying to establish with Nathan's escape. Whether he can stop mind reading only at will or if it's a natural effect seems to be an open question.

Remember when HRG & the Haitian were walking to a building or car or something and Parkman was trying to read HRG's mind from the car...and gave himself a nose bleed. He struggled like shit and all he could get was the name Sylar. Haitian's powers appear natural.
