Back to "The Client" - Michael knew what he was doing the whole time with Tim Meadows. Right before he closed the deal, Jan started to see what was happening and began to talk. Michael silenced her with a look and a "shush" that made her mouth drop open - he was completely in control of that situation and knew exactly what he was doing. She responded to that confidence.

Of course, Michael than completely blows it, but that's the other side of his personality. He is an outstanding example of someone that was promoted one level too high.

I loved that he seemed half-drunk when he announced the Hammermill deal. Like that wasn't a big deal to him at all - the PARTY was a big deal to him. Sales is something he can do without thinking. It's such an awesome way to humanize him.

What a great post. You nailed it right on the head.

Toby's played by Paul Lieberstein, who's written for the show several times ("Health Care," "The Client," "Dwight's Speech" and "The Carpet"). He also wrote several of my favorite King of the Hill episodes. I remember reading somewhere that all the writers for The Office have appeared or will be appearing in episodes--it's writen into their contracts.

About this ep: I just wanted to say that Jim's physical reaction to Angela in Dwight's room was hands down one of the funniest things I've seen on television this year. And one of the deleted scenes puzzled me:

Spoiler:
Was Jan really so desperate for male company that she hit on Josh, which could have had disasterous effects on the company? I mean, she and Michael nearly losts their jobs in "Valentine's Day" over similar events. Was I missing something here?

For those of you wondering about the Stamford vs. Scranton branch thing:
Spoiler:
From what I've read, Stamford DOES close down, with some of the employees being folded into the Scranton branch--so yes, Jim will be back at his old desk soon. Also, Jan is supposed to oversee the merge, and winds up tormenting, micromanaging and emasculating Michael the whole time. Of course, those spoilers could have been wrong, but it does sound plausible.

Paul Lieberstein is also one of the producers of the show. And yes, a LOT of the writers and producers act in the show (Ryan, Kelly, and Toby are 3 examples)

I think that's part of it. I also think he's just that guy who doesn't care enough to really know who the hell anyone is.

I think he's also just partially oblivious by nature. He did point out that he may have slept with a man or two in the 60s and that there would be no way of telling.

I think it's pretty clear from a few episodes that theyr'e painting Creed as a burned out ex-hippie who's fried his brain.

Yeah, and I think he referred to Angela as "Andrea".

On Creed, also recall that last season when Michael let out the secret on Jim's thing for Pam, Creed asked "Which one is Pam?"

I think this long-running gag on the show is a combination of both him not caring to know anyone in the office and the long-term effects of too many drugs in the '60s.

I think this is because...
Spoiler:

...Jan was reacting to Michael's "800lb Gorilla" aside that he's still with Carol. It's been shown in previous episodes that, despite Jan's stand-off-ish treatment of Michael, she really is attracted to him (for instance, the change of clothes she brought with her in the "Casino Night" finale last season - she was prepared to spend the night with Michael). Jan just has a strange and unpredictable way of showing it (she's a bit of a romantic headcase, quite frankly). So I think hitting on Josh is Jan's odd way of getting back at Michael for being with Carol - she really just wanted to make Michael jealous so he'll keep pursuing her. (Of course, this is just my opinion and I could be wrong.)

The thing I got most from this deleted scene is that Josh is probably gay. No way in hell would I ever have said no...

I disagree; the other deleted scene where he talks to camera about how discussing Jan and Michael's "history" is unprofessional (and gross) I think shows that he is just too professional himself to fall into that. Plus, he got arrested for breaking into the women's barracks in the Coast Guard.

Well, exactly. When was the last time you heard a straight guy describe a hetero relationship as gross? Unprofessional sure, but gross?

And in your modern "don't ask, don't tell" military, he probably just went along for the ride to the women's barracks.

Hey, maybe if the Scranton and Stamford offices merge, there'll be some "will they or won't they" sexual tension between Josh and Oscar.

Gay people in committed relationships often wear rings.

Because if you are straight and are married and turn down the advances of another woman you are gay. Yeahhh right!

If Michael had been given a normal childhood he wouldnt need to spend 99.9% of his time trying to get people to like him and he could just do his job, which, I believe, if he ever DID pay attention to, he would be unstoppable.
And don't forget, the camera's presence for the "documentary" is what leads him to take his foibles to a whole new level likely not seen before.

He's probably implying that the thought of Michael having sex with anyone is gross. Doesn't sound gay to me... I suppose it's still a possibility, but I just don't think that line implies it.

He's probably just married to a woman, and thought sex with michael was gross.

Otherwise Michael would do something to offend Josh which would lead him to a 3 month long paid vacation.

I tend to agree. In fact...
Spoiler:
...I'd bet that Jan was secretly hoping to hook up with Michael that weekend, just as in "Casino Night". I'm not sure if she was intentionally looking to make Michael jealous, but after hearing him talk about still being involved with Carol, I think she needed to convince herself that if Michael could hook up with someone else, so could she. It is interesting and probably telling that she went for "the poor man's Michael Scott".
