He has to have the best agent and publicist in the business. Five months ago I had never heard of him. Then after he hosted SNL, I've been constantly hearing his name. Oh, and he is not the least bit funny.

I don't hate Dane Cook or think he's bad, but I'm another person who doesn't understand how he's the hottest comedian today and sells out 18k arenas. I could see Chris Rock selling out arenas, but Dane Cook?

He is an "ok" comedian as far as his jokes go, but what really makes me not like him is the over-exaggerated movements and crap he does during his act. To me that just SCREAMS hacky. I don't necessarily want a comedian to just stand there and tell some jokes, but I also don't want to watch every action taking place in your joke acted out poorly like a retarded mime.

That's why there is as many people that like him as there is that hate him. The way he acts out his jokes is why I think he's funny. And who cares if he stole jokes from Louis CK. At least they're funny when Cook tells them. That Lucky Louie show is crap.

Exactly my point, his jokes are nowhere near strong enough to not resort to some hacky theatrics IMO.

I wasn't too impressed with the first few shows but, I think Lucky Louie got a lot better as the season went along. Louis CK is one of the best comics working today as far as I'm concerned. At least Dane knows who to steal from.

I guess MySpace could be Dane Cook's secret. I never heard of him until he was in the news for having the #1 album on the charts, which I think wasn't too long before hosting SNL. Maybe a few months. I think I saw him mention on a talk show how he spends a lot of time on MySpace.

I like him, but he isnt laugh out loud funny to me, most of the time.

His jokes are long...its like he tells a story. I just like watching/listening to him (no homo).

I find him pretty darn funny in the material I've heard. All I have to go off of is the two cds he released.

I wonder is some of the backlash against him is "Oh, I hate him because he's popular and its trendy to hate popular things."

I'm sure that isn't the case for everyone that doesn't like him, and many here have pointed out reasons they don't like him. But in general, some have to hate him solely for the fact that he's popular.

I enjoy his material. I like many other comics. I wish they could have his level of popularity as well. But, such is life.

I think there's some lingering Former College Radio DJ elitism in the way I look at Dane Cook these days, but...yeah, I'm with das. I really did enjoy his first album. Kinda uneven but there was some good stuff on there, and I was really won over by his hyperkinetic delivery. His second album got about as many laughs from me as the first -- only it was twice as long -- and there does seem to be kind of an inverse relationship between Cook's popularity and the quality of his newer material.

Someone must tell me why Reagan isn't super-famous by now.
It could be that Cook pretty much stole his delivery style, and happened to become popular first, so now anyone seeing Regan dismisses him as a "Dane Cook wannabe" when really it's the other way around...

I don't even know who he is.

What should I seek out to judge whether or not I find him funny?

His monologue from hosting SNL. It's basically a 10-minute "greatest hits/best of" his standup act. Perfect for testing the Cook waters.

I was able to watch about half of the special last night. It starts out a little slow, but then I found myself laughing more and more.

I do like his 2 previous albums though. I think they're pretty funny.

I'm always in the mood for Dane Cook. It's not that he tells "jokes"..he tells stories, and it's in his delivery and enunciation of the words. Loved his first cd,( the monopoly bit and spelling bit is hysterical!) second was okay...he is really really big with my daughters age group (18-21). He is quotable..that's what they do all the time..they quote him.
but hey, if he doesnt float your boat, it doesnt mean he isnt funny...funny is in the eye of the beholder.

Watching the HBO special is NOT a good judge, because the 1st 30 minutes were terrible, but it got alot better.

Since the joke stealing charges emerged, Ive been a bit standoffish with Cook, but he was excelent on SNL.

And why is Cook 1000x more recognizable than Reagan?
because reagan is a middle aged family man while Cook is a Gen XYZ type who is embraced by college kids.

No Dane Cook joke is ever told that 100% of the listening audience under 35 CANNOT relate to.

ASK ANY COMEDIAN in the buisness who the best comic they know is, and 95% will answer Brian Reagan.

My personal take on Dane is this...

I think Dane Cook, the comedian, is funny... I liked both his albums and went to the Vicious Circle taping in Boston... Laughed for pretty much the whole show, and he was on for close to 3-1/2 hours...

But I also think Dane Cook, the phenomenon, is really overrated... I thought he came off as a millionaire cry-baby on Tourgasm. Speaking of which, the only good thing to come out of that show, in my opinion, was people taking notice of Bobby Kelly... Who is fucking hilarious.

Dane is no longer a comic, he's a product... and he knows exactly how to market the product... That's my take anyway...
