Dane Cook- Do you think he's funny?

I've smirked once or twice and thought he was sort of funny for a minute or so doing his Tom Cruise/Oprah bit on Jimmy Kimmel.
Overall I've seen enough and just don't get the hysteria over this guy.

He gets shredded pretty good in these two articles.

I have to be in the mood for him. I wasn't tonight, so I TIVO'ed the special. But wouldn't this conversation be better suited for the special thread?

Yeah you're probably right but since 'Tourgasm' is on HBO I figured i'd post in 'TV Talk'.

I just linked this from the otters 'Favorite comedian thread'. Now I think I just confused myself -ohbfrank-

Here's that link.....

He's OK. Not really my kind of humor for the most part. He certainly has a lot of energy. I have a friend who really likes him and got me to watch something from him probably a year or so ago, a Comedy Central special I think. I just shrugged a bit. It was entertaining I guess, but I didn't think he was as good as she built him up to be. And now that his popularity is even greater, I just don't really get it.

Gdrlv 09-04-06 11:29 PM

Incredibly unfunny. Don't care for his stuff at all.

Bill Needle 09-04-06 11:36 PM

Decidedly not funny.

slop101 09-05-06 12:05 AM

Since I graduated college more than 10 years ago, I guess I'm just too old to get him.
Just like I don't have enough chromosomes to enjoy Larry the Cable Guy...

Dane Cook is to comedy what Limp Bizkit is to rock & roll.

How is Dane Cook the best thing to ever happen to comedy!?!

MasterofDVD 09-05-06 02:36 AM

I think he's very funny and I was pretty bummed his part in Waiting... was so small. Hopefully Employee Of The Month will deliver.

dvd182 09-05-06 02:51 AM

Another vote for not funny.

Thrush 09-05-06 02:57 AM

Painfully unfunny. Makes Carrot Top look like Richard Pryor. When I think about his success I'm reminded of the Seinfeld Bania Episode:

Jerry: "You think that's funny?!!"

George: "I don't know, I like stuff you don't have to think about too much."

Jerry: "You like Bania's act. You're a closet Bania fan!"

George: "maybe I am."

Jerry: "Oh, I'm gonna puke."

George: "Puke!! That's a funny word. Puke. (laughing) puke! Don't have to

think about that!"

argh923 09-05-06 03:23 AM

Very, very funny. Not sure why haters are emerging.

Roto 09-05-06 04:08 AM

I think he's funny, but I have no idea how he got so huge. The only thing that makes him stand out from other comics is his hyperactive delivery and that he dresses like he's auditioning for an Old Navy commercial.

I think I like him because his goofiness reminds me of Brian Regan, but Regan is one of my all time favorites, Dane Cook isn't even close.

raven56706 09-05-06 06:40 AM

i dont think he is funny...

The first link requires signing up. The second one is a joke. Every paragraph boils down to:

This is, for now, the Cook legacy: He signals the end of the comedian as we knew him — reclusive, angry, socially awkward, anguished, self-defeating.

Negative.
Cook is trying something different than 99% of the comedians that preceeded him and that is the source of the hatred? Because he isn't negative or have personal demons to draw from? Love him or hate him, he is different and that is good. It's better than a fake million dollar redneck any day.

 I'm not some super huge mega fan, but I do find him funny.

DamingR 09-05-06 07:48 AM

I think he's funny. The first 25 minutes of his special last night were not. I will check out the rest of it tonight.

movieking 09-05-06 08:05 AM

I didn't see the special, but I think that he is funny. Of course, his Tourgasm series was God-awful, but on other occassions when I have seen him on TV or listened to his comedy bits, he's a funny guy. Even better than Louis CK ;)

JCWBobC 09-05-06 08:17 AM

Loved him in Simon Sez with Dennis Rodman.

Luther Heggs 09-05-06 08:26 AM

He was funny in Mystery Men, the "jelly" bit is funny, and the "car alarm" bit is funny. And...that's it. Next.

Mr. Cinema 09-05-06 08:37 AM

I prefer Lewis Black, Bill Maher, or Jim Gaffigan over Cook. He just doesn't make me laugh.

funny that the 5th word here is "different", because the primary complaint that I hear in regards to DC is how much of his material he's stolen from other comedians. I have no clue where they are (though a web search will probably turn them up) but I heard a few mp3 clips of him, followed by another comedian, and they're almost the same routine.

Not identical, mind you, but similar in the way that Denis Leary was similar to Bill Hicks.

I've listened to some of Dane's stuff. it made me chuckle a bit, but generally seemed like more energy over funny. George Carlin (1970-1985 or so) he's not.

Obviously his haters are right. 18,000 people show up for his comedy show, selling it out, because they think he's not funny.

He's big now because he's funny, but it seems you have to be 20-something to be a big fan of that type of humor.
I think his CDs are funny- some of the best I've heard. His special is not.

iggystar 09-05-06 08:52 AM

The first 30 minutes of the special weren't as funny as the last, I almost woke up the house laughing.

dadaluholla 09-05-06 08:54 AM

No I do not like Dane Cook at all.
