But we see that he is quirky, not someone that is a cut throat, going into towns like a Viking raping, killing, an pillaging everything he sees. He came into Deadwood with the Captain, not an army, and tried to force his way on people in a more peaceful manor. When that didn't work, now the Vikings are coming into town.
I don't understand what Hearst does. He's supposed to be "the boy the earth talks to," and when he showed up at the end of S2, he said he was only interested in the color, but he sure doesn't seem to spend any time up at the mine. Instead he just hangs around the hotel. I don't even know why he needs to be in Deadwood. I think he's just a nutjob, as is evidenced by his own admission that he can't control his behavior, as well as his recent preoccupation with Bullock arresting him. The men he brought in are there to get revenge on the camp for disrespecting Hearst. He doesn't seem to be pursuing any cognizible self interest or business interest anymore. He's just tearing stuff up.

I agree with a lot of what you said. When Hearst talked to Al he said he gave not shit about the town or how it was ran, he was just there for his color. I think he lied and being one of the richest men in the country and probably the richest in the west, he is probably too egocentricle to just let people not bend to his will.

This season peaked with the Dan vs. Captain fight but it has really dragged into junk ever since, imo. It's still entertaining for the acting but the plot lines have gone nowhere.
