Kyle XY - series thread

Its an ABC Family show and I was extremely skeptical, but desided to give it a shot, and I am now officially addicted to yet another television show... Anyone else give it a try?

Thrush 06-27-06 03:11 AM

Very similar to John Doe. In fact the opening was almost exactly the same (Guy wakes up naked, lying curled in the fetal position in the middle of the woods, with no memory of who he is or how he got there). That being said I enjoyed the pilot. Hopefully they do a better job with this premise than John Doe did.

Chew 06-27-06 05:59 AM

Very John Doe, but found it interesting enough to watch again next week.

I never got into 'John Doe' is it repeated anywhere? I love these kinda of mystery shows!

Chew 06-27-06 12:22 PM

It looks like you just missed the Friday night run of John Doe on SciFi. It's on the schedule for 07/16 and 07/23 Midnight EST though.

SMB-IL 06-27-06 01:35 PM

Never saw John Doe, but loved this! I was skeptical too about it being on ABC Family, but I thought it was very well done. Hopefully it won't just devolve into some kind of 90210 meets X-files....

xnlt 06-27-06 06:50 PM

The Kyle pilot will re-air on ABC Friday night.... check your listing if you missed it.

Awesome, I didn't tape it the first time around because of my low expectations, but now I'll just DVDr the season...

Trust me you're better off not having seen it. Its one of those shows where you get the impression that the producers came up with the original pitch, and I'll grant you its an interesting premise, but they didn't have any idea of where to go with it beyond the first handful of eps. After that it just became an unbridled mess.

You may want to check out a show called Nowhere Man . Similar premise to John Doe, but a far superior show in every aspect.

ABC Family's original scripted drama KYLE XY heated-up ratings on ABC Family with its premiere Monday, June 26, (8:00 PM 9:00 PM), delivering a 2.1 HH rating and over 2.6 million total viewers, the highest for any original series telecast in the history of the channel. The series ranked No. 2 in the time period among basic cable in HH (2.1 rating), total viewers (2, 643), Adults 18-34 (0.9) and Adults 18-49 (1.1).

"Nothing is more rewarding than having a show you really believe in come out of the gate strong," said Paul Lee, president, ABC Family." It's such a great show and our marketing campaign seems to have really resonated with the audience. We're being parodied on YouTube, we're being recommended on iTunes, and we're being watched on cable. We're absolutely thrilled."

The series outperformed year-ago time period deliveries by 50% in HH (2.1 vs. 1.4), 52% in total viewers (2,643 vs. 1,735), 50% with Adults 18-34 (0.9 vs. 0.6) and 83% with Adults 18-49 (1.1 vs. 0.6).

Produced by Touchstone Television, the new ABC Family original series about a mysterious boy with no past and no belly button, KYLE XY airs Mondays (8:00 - 9:00 PM ET/PT). In addition, beginning June 30th the first four episodes will be repurposed on ABC, Fridays (9:00 - 10:00 PM ET/PT). KYLE XY is currently available for download on iTunes and beginning early July on the ABC Family broadband player.

it was defintely decent, gotta love Tivo to find all sorts of stuff you would never imagine, ABC family, having a decent show? Whodathunkit

aktick 06-30-06 07:22 PM

Reminder, the pilot is on in half an hour on ABC, then again tomorrow night on ABC Family.

Chew 06-30-06 08:05 PM

And for about the first 3 minutes, the ABC version was in HD. Then (just about the time I was going to post this!) it popped back into SD.

If it's supposed to be in HD during it's ABC run, that's certainly where I'll be watching it. :D

Assuming that three minutes wasn't some strange fluke that is. :(

aktick 06-30-06 09:21 PM

HD feed came back up here.

aktick 06-30-06 09:30 PM

Aside from that extremely corny ending, I liked it.

I like the voiceovers, makes it a bit more interesting.

Not sure what's going on with the guy following him.

Hopefully it's given a chance to play out.

mookiemeister 06-30-06 09:31 PM

I just saw it tonight on ABC. Not bad. I'll continue to tune in next week.

riley_dude 07-01-06 11:04 AM

I really liked this show. If it is as good as this episode I will keep watching. Good cast, nice lookin lead and love the narration plus Krycheck from tht X-files.

innocentfreak 07-01-06 11:38 PM

Damn I missed all the airings of the pilot. Oh well I don't need any more shows.

Tommy Ceez 07-02-06 12:09 AM

If Kyle shows his powers by killing and devouring the kid brother, I'll keep watching

Showing 1.99 for me now. Maybe I will seek other ways of tracking it down.

Chauzer 07-02-06 02:46 AM

the opening scene was exactly like john doe

i liked this pilot a lot, will defiantely keep watching

WarriorPrincess 07-03-06 11:55 AM

I thought the same thing - John Doe for the teeny bopper set (in a good way :) ). I really liked it - very engaging and I even liked the family members. The peripheral characters can get a bit annoying in some shows, but not with this one, at least, not yet. :)

When I first saw John Doe it reminded me of the Pretender...again, in a good way...so here's hoping this show lasts.

I just happened to notice that the "Sleuth" channel currently plays John Doe on Thursdays (some weeks with two episodes) for those interested. That channel is available on some cable systems and DirecTV.

Wait...was the new ep on Monday? If so, I guess I'll have to wait for the HD feed Friday on ABC. :)

That's what I'm doing, waiting until Friday. ;)

garmonbozia 07-06-06 04:14 PM

I thought this show looked so incredibly stupid when I saw ads for it at the movie theater....

I was visiting my parents this past weekend. On Friday night I decided to go take a nap while the rest of my family watched some horrible crap on tv. I could hear them laughing at Funniest Home Videos. When it was over, I came back downstairs and saw the repeat of the pilot episode of Kyle XY on ABC at 9pm. I don't know if it was because there was nothing else to watch or not, but I watched the whole thing and was actually a little impressed by the fact that an original show for the Family Channel held my interest. I watched the second episode on Monday night on its regular channel. I'll probably check out the rest of the eps for the summer as well. What a nice surpise actually having a scripted drama to watch over the summer that doesn't completely suck or isn't on HBO.

aktick 07-12-06 09:02 PM

People still watching this? I just watched last Friday's ABC airing.

Still looking good to me. I liked the skeleton at the end there, gives us something a little more concrete to speculate about.

Chew 07-12-06 09:09 PM

Still watching, still enjoying.

riley_dude 07-12-06 10:26 PM

I like it. I hope they get more into the Mythology though and away from the sappy family stuff.

Right, and hopefully that's where the skeleton will begin to lead us.

ABC FAMILY. ;)

lucasorion 07-13-06 06:16 AM

I'm still watching this show, but I have a creepy feeling I'm making people like James Dobson happy by doing so.

tucker 07-14-06 06:54 PM

Reminder, Kyle XY will be on ABC tonight......

Chew 07-21-06 12:30 PM

Futon Critic is reporting that ABC has extended the Friday repeats by "at least" two weeks (which would be 08/04).

 More HD!

Charlie Goose 07-21-06 10:46 PM

I was surprised that a show on ABC Family would tackle topics such as teenage sex, skinnydipping, drinking, and masturbation.

Tommy Ceez 07-21-06 11:35 PM

Yeah, it was actually pretty raunchy...

But now that I think about it, this is entirely a teen issues show, with a mystery backdrop...Kyle is a 'blank slate' so EVERYTHING has to be explained to him, which gives ABC Family the ability to teach lessons about alchahol, sex and love without the normally awkward scenes where a character who should know this stuff has it explained to them.

But it was still funny to turn to my wife and ask "Did he just bang her?!?!?" When Declan and the sister were coming out of the woods.

Ayre 07-22-06 04:10 AM

Who else expected the neighbor girl to walk in during a Kyle solo performance?

They certainly set us up for it.

riley_dude 07-22-06 04:08 PM

Kyle kinda reminds me of Mork in the first couple of seasons with A lesson of the week.
I did read an article with the kid who plays Kyle and he says they get more into the secrets in the next few episode.

Tommy Ceez 07-22-06 07:17 PM

BTW...its funny, people talk about American TV being so uptight about sex but violence is OK, then we go posting here about how shocking some making out and offscreen sex is, and no one mentions Kryczeck breaking a mans neck
