i just finished season 5 of buffy and season 2 of angel. ive been alternating between them every night so they match up in case they had any connections between the series. season 3 of angel had 2 episodes in before season 6 of buffy started. were there any connections between these 2 seasons so that i should watch the 2 eps of angel and then start buffy?

Buffy season six and Angel season three don't really have any crossover, so you don't have to worry about that. The closest it comes is that there's an offscreen crossover mentioned in both series, but you don't really need to see it in order to follow it.

There is, however, some crossover between Angel season four and Buffy season seven, and the episodes don't quite match up. So you can't just alternate between episodes.

Buffy 7.17 (Lies My Parents Told Me) leads into Angel 4.15 (Orpheus) which in turn leads into Buffy 7.18 (Dirty Girls).

And then Angel 4.22 (Home) takes place before Buffy 7.21 (End of Days).

I believe they showed this offscreen meeting in one of the comics. I don't remember which one though.

Just finished watching Season 2.

Some thoughts (spoilerized for those just starting the series too)...

Spoiler:

The whole Angel story arc in the season was great, with a poignant ending that's only lessened somewhat by me having ahead of time the knowledge that he ultimately survives (I bet it was better back then on first broadcast when everyone thought he was dead for sure). And Spike and Drusilla were both great additions, a definite step up from the Master and his (yawn) Chosen One. One thing I had trouble with in the Season was the sudden transformation of Giles from dorky librarian into something of a demon fighter with a very dark past (no wonder no one believes Clark Kent is Superman - it just seems too much of a stretch for someone to transform from uberdork to superdude overnight!). However, the scene where Giles find Ginny's dead body in his home was very well-done and moving. And Xander has quickly become a favorite character for me due to his quick wit in every episode - no matter what, he brings the funny. I'm still not totally a fan of Willow yet - sorry! - but I think she was much better in this season than she was in Season 1. And having Cordelia take on a more major role this season was great because she was really good in season 1.

Anyway, overall, this was a great season and I enjoyed it a lot. I really love being able to marathon a good show like this. Now, on to Season 3!

Glad you enjoyed it. For me, S2 is still the best overall. S3 is also very good, and perhaps strong on an episode-by-episode basis, but I still prefer the story and revelations in S2.

My friend just got into Buffy recently and he enjoyed S2 over S3-- although he admitted that S2 has a greater number of crap episodes than S3. Me personally? I prefer S3, but both seasons are excellent.

Dorky vs Badass Giles is a bit of an ongoing battle that depends on who is doing the writing that week. In the Buffy against Dracula he is played off as a total boob, slapstick duty only. Couple that with his badass defining act at the very end of season 5 and you'll only scratch your head even more (especially if you go back and see the first season again).

The rest of my post i deleted as to not ruin Wesley for you, but I'm sure those who ended up watching Angel will know where I was going and what comparison I was making.

Girlfriend: I'm not sure I like Giles...
Me: Just wait. By the end, there will be very few people you like more then him. Oh... and you'll hate Riley.
Girlfriend: Who?
Me: Never mind

To be fair, I don't think I ever hated R. He was always just doing his job. Plus, you could say he got what he deserved in the end.

Re: I just started Buffy...

S2 had a stronger season-long plotline, but S3 had better standalone episodes. It's kind of a draw for me which I'd consider greater.

S3 had outstanding consistency, but lacked the emotional impact of that crazy end-run of S2. Upon a rewatch, I saw S5 was the perfect mix of the 2, and probably Buffy's best (even though S6 is my favorite- fuck the haters).

There's a version out there where Riley slowly gets dismembered?

I've written off his whole bit and the Initiative of S4 as Captain Cardboard and the Spiders from the Military Industrial Complex. Just killed the flow, which is a shame because S4 had some killer character development and the best standalones (S3 had more quality standalones, but S4 had the best).

Yes, I've said that about Wesley to everyone I've introduced the show(s) too. I end up looking like an idiot for a few weeks, but then I usually except their apology.

Oh and fuck Riley.

Been watching this show again. This time with my gf who never saw an episode. We're currently on season two at the point
Spoiler:
Angel loses his soul
Her jaw dropped at that moment and wants to plow through the series. Damn this show still holds up well.

My wife and I have a lot of shows on DVD to watch, and can sometimes go years between seasons with watching other stuff. I think we're finally getting back around to Buffy and Angel again... I believe Buffy season 5 is next... we'll have to watch the last episode of 4 as a refresher at this point though!

Re: I just started Buffy...

You'd probably want to watch the last 2 episodes of Season 4, as the very last one doesn't really have that much to do with the rest of the season.

Hint:
Spoiler:
It's the dream episode

I desperately need to pick up Angel on DVD. I was getting my fix on Hulu, but got rid of it recently.

Both were epic shows.

Oh man, that plot in Angel about you know who getting his master revenge was so great, the viewer watched with horror as all the people were manipulated like chess pieces...and at the end you know who smothering you know who with a pillow....

Who?

Next episode of ANGEL I'm about to watch is from season 4, where they take on a you know what made out of you know what, and you know who gets thrown off of a you know what, another you know who gets tossed against a you know what, and it starts to rain down you know what just as you know who and you know who start doing you know what while you know who is watching from above.

yeah. Love that episode. That sequence was perfection.

Watching season 5 of Buffy for the first time since it aired (about a decade ago?) and its better than I remember. Granted, I've only watched the first two eps...

Season two of Buffy is probably the best season, but season five is my personal favorite. Adding Dawn to the show worked much better than I think anyone could have imagined at the time.

You sound like an audience member of those illegal "Once More with Feeling" screenings.

Apparently yelling that out and booing, hissing and throwing stuff at the screen whenever she appeared is the thing to do at those shows.

I would love to go to one of those. Just so I could slap those people. Hard.

Re: I just started Buffy...

I'm not sure why all the hate for Dawn. She was supposed to be an annoying kid sister and she did her job well. The only thing that season that didn't work at all was the witchcraft/drugs story-lines Marti put together.

Nick Martin 12-10-11 04:14 AM

Re: I just started Buffy...

I know, hating Dawn is one of those supposedly "cool" things to do as a fan.

Except it's not, but whatever. I don't get the hate either because if the average fan is asked why the hate, the stock answer always seems to be "she's soooo annoying" which in itself isn't much of an explanation. No explanation for the extra o's either but they usually appear. Most Buffy-based messageboards aren't the best places to be if you're a fan, which is ironic but very true.

Connor was much more polarizing in comparison, but with him it was very easy to understand why he was the way he was, what made him make such bad choices. Talk about someone who was kicked around all his life. In the end he was fully redeemed, which was a damn good thing at least to me anyway.

If we start bitching about aspect ratios again we can rival the thread in the HD Talk. :)
