Advertisers don't care about time-shifters, they want ratings for live viewing of the shows (and subsequently, the commercials).
Right, but ABC.com does have ads (although it's only like 3 seperate 30 second commercial breaks per episode, but there are still ads.)

aktick 05-12-07 06:17 PM

I thought Lost was the most DVR'd show...not sure how big a difference that would make in the overall ratings.

And while I think what Patman said is generally true, I for one do actually stop fast-forwarding to watch a commercial if I haven't seen it and it looks interesting. So I think there is still some value in DVR users for advertisers.

Right. Which is why website viewings should factor in somehow, but not iTunes, which are commercial free. Then again, the studios will get revenue from their cut of the $2 per download.

Patman 05-13-07 08:38 AM

Wait, it's just 90 seconds of ads in the online version versus 16-18 minutes of ads on the live broadcast? Still not as significant amount of ads for advertisers for an "hour" show IMHO.

True, but they can target ads to specific demos since Internet users are likely to fall into more specific demos.

I have to wonder why NBC doesn't try the two Law & Orders' they're moving to the USA Network on Saturdays. I think original episodes of both could garner around 7-9m a week... Is it cheaper to put 'em on that network or perhaps, more than likely, better advertising revenue?

I think there only moving Law & Order: CI to the USA network. The original Law & Order will still be on NBC, first run. I see what you mean though, In repeats on saturday the Law & Orders do great most of the time taking the #1 slot of the night. 7-9 million people won't be watching CI on the USA network hell HBO doesn't even get those #'s. Althrough its neat that NBC is taking a risk which i applad them for I think business wise they should have just moved CI to saturdays. Hell NBC could've revived primetime saturday from Death by airing new episodes.

Here's how I think they should have done it:

Saturday
8pm-Law & Order: SVU (Repeat) or Dateline NBC
9pm-Law & Order: CI (new episode)
10pm-Law & Order (new episode)

Hell they could even try airing new episodes of SVU on saturdays, but it does well on tuesdays take the # 1 spot in its respective timeslot so NBC wouldn't want to take away one of the few shows that actually do good on the network in terms of ratings.

Regarding fridays ratings, Althrough I don't watch or like close to home if CBS cancel's it they are the stupidest network on TV. None of the shows on Fridays CBS lineup do bad and i don't think they should cancel any of them but if they are thinking of cancelling any of the 3 shows on their friday lineup they should look at Ghost Whisperer cause it does the worst out of the 3. Nice to see dateline not get crushed.

CI is the only Law & Order that is going to USA, and NBC is still going to air it a few days later (on Saturday). Law & Order is being held until midseason, when it'll air Sundays at 8 after football season. Friday Night Lights is moving to Fridays at 10 in the fall, which is a bad move. Those 2 shows should be definitely be switched.

I thought Survivor would have done a little better for the *season finale* episode but still in this day of primetime TV I expect low #'s. 12 million is respectable.
the new episode of King of the hill did awful in the ratings last night & i think sadly FOX will just drop the show. The Simpsons got decent ratings.
I can't believe Family Guy gets the biggest ratings out of all of FOX's animation shows cause the show just isn't funny or good, but its cheap to produce so FOX will Def. keep it.

I'm glad to see KofQ go out with strong numbers. A lot of long running shows limp to the finish line.

It's got a following, and these past few episodes have been hillarious.

That said, no surprise the Simpsons have dropped so much, this season has just been really, really bad.

The 7 - 8pm field is a horrible one, they send shows there to die. Honestly amazed people still watch Survivor.

13.50 million is respectable numbers but unlike Will & Grace which got around 18 million for its finally I wish the KOQ's would have at least reached the 15 million mark for the finally, still I'm glad it gained viewers week by week in its final season.
Great finale and I'm glad the KOQ's didn't fuck its finale in the end so it could never have a spin-off or come back like Will & Grace did in its series finale episode.
Thanks for the ride...
CBS kind of treated the KOQ's final season badly by airing the first 6 eps. in dec. & then airing the final 7 up to now. Of course CBS really have never treated the KOQ's that great over its nine season run which is sad because it had been the funniest CBS comedy for the past 9 years and is one of the few sicoms not to have declined much in Quality over 9 seasons.
CSI: Miami got decent ratings for a pretty awful season finale episode.
Law & Order: CI slightly improved in the ratings but still took third in its respective timeslot. Great episode and I think CI is the best and most underrated out of the 3 L&O's. It's moving to the USA network were I hope it becomes a MEGA HIT on for the network.

I just started getting into Boston Legal, glad to see that has fairly solid ratings as well. (Moderate in the demo, good overall).

To some advertisers, the 90 seconds are better.

If someone's watching live TV, they can (and probably will) be active during the commercials... getting up, bathroom, snacks, whatever. And there are a bunch of them... so they'll only see a few and may not be paying much attention at all.

If I watch Lost online, "brought to you by Brita Filters", I not only remember the sponsor (because it's just one), but I also sit through the ads -- because the show's going to continue in just 30 seconds.

Patman 05-16-07 10:26 PM

For 30 seconds? Really?

Still -- you do remember who sponsors the show (during the show at least) a lot more than regular TV, right?

I'm watching the Tonight Show live right now, nearly 45 minutes in. I can't honestly name a single commercial that has been on the show.

But I watched last week's Lost online and I can still remember that Brita sponsored it.

Patman 05-17-07 07:19 AM

No, don't even care who's doing the sponsoring.

Don't idols ratings usually dwindle as the season progresses? That is, until the finale.

Yeah - I think Idol has reached it's peak next year I don't think it will be that "big." It will still be a great show - look at Survivor (still pulls in ratings) but it will not have Water Cooler appeal.

I'll preface this by saying I watch AI on a very regular basis... but "great" show? Let's not get carried away. There is a difference between "hit" show and "great" show.
