For the record, I've bought 2 Idol records: Kim Locke's "One Love" and John Steven's "Red."

For my money, both are far superior than anything put out by any of the winners or runner-ups so far. Esp. Locke's record, which also includes the best single released by an Idol contestant ("Eighth World Wonder", though "Since U Been Gone" comes in a close second).

Here's the thing: some artists are just naturally better on record than live. And there is absolutely no way to know how someone will sound until they enter the studio. I would have thought Steven's record would be a bust, but it is a great collection of standards which is better than most of the standards collections out these days (yeah, I'm talking to you Rod Stewart and George Michaels). Well produced and well sung.

But, would I pay to see Stevens live? Hell no! He has all the charism of a can of SPAM. But then I love Sade's records and there's no way I would see her live either. Some singers are better left in the hands of a decent producer than a live sound mixer.

Esp after this week, I am sure Elliott falls into this category and, yet, will have the longest career of this year's final four, winner or not. He showed that not only are his vocals consistently good, but that he can stretch past his safety zone. Listen to his performance of "Trouble" again. He out-did Taylor in the blue-eyed soul game. Would I see him live? Probably not. Would I buy the record? Hell, yes!

As for Taylor, I don't really care for him as a stage performer, but I bet when the Idol collection is released in the next couple of weeks, some people will be pleasantly suprised. The music world right now needs someone to fill the shoes of Michael McDonald/Paul Carrack. He just has a great blue-eyed soul voice. Period. Would I pay to see him live? No. He wants to be Joe Cocker on stage, but he's just Michael McDonald. All he needs is the beard. Buy the record? Maybe, but only outside of the hands of Idol producers. And for the record, I do believe he'll have multiple top ten singles.

As for Chris, I thought he sounded good...for a Live wannabe. He's probably the best of the live singers. But he also is a physically careless singer, almost blowing his voice last week. He reminds me of a college baseball pitcher who breaks his arm shortly into his first professional season, never able to again be what he once was. I have a feeling he'll wreck his chords long before he can really establish himself. Would I pay to see him live? Maybe. Buy the record? Maybe. I just don't expect many of them.

Which leaves Kat. Not very vocally memorable and yet tolerable. But a mostly decent live performer. She falls right in the middle comfortablty, and is exactly the kind of performer picked as the winner season for season so far. In other words, forgettable. See live? No. Buy the record? No.

But then...what do I know? I'm still waiting for Skatergirl's record.

I wish the final 4 would have gone with their individual solo's in last nights Elvis medley rather than thier chosen songs. Kat sounded awesome in the "Are you Lonesome Tonight" and Elliot blew me away with his (which name escapes me right now). I almost didnt think it was him singing since he had an edgier sound to hit.

Patman 05-11-06 10:27 AM

Elliott would look at home with a Keebler Elf hat on his head.

SleepyW 05-11-06 10:32 AM

I thought Chris and Kat were definitely the bottom 2, but also thought Kat got hosed with the theme, and they made it tougher for her. After hearing her sing "Are You Lonesome Tonight?", I wish she had sung that Tuesday!

But I'm glad Chris got the boot for 2 reasons:
1. Kat needs to stay at least one more week, for diversity, and because she can sing (hopefully get a better theme next week).
2. I think if Chris does make a record, he will now have more freedom to do a rock album vs. a more commercial pop album if he had won the whole thing.

Just announced on Ryan Seacrest's morning radio show....Chris will be offered the lead singer spot for a major band. they wouldn't say who it is, but Ryan said to watch Extra tonight (7pm east coast) to see the offer made.

Ryan had Chris on this morning and Chris said that he expected Ashton Kutcher to jump out and say he had been punk'd rotfl

What band (of any note) would be looking for a new singer? Anybody got any guesses?

Fuel (but he already turned them down before, but that was when he was still part of the show and couldn't commit to anything at all);

Van Halen

Creed

Queen

Velvet Revolver (rumors of Weiland's drug use)

Wham! (just kidding)

Queen should stick with Paul Rodgers (although not officially part of the band, I guess).

I had hoped he would get with Fuel. Maybe getting the boot will show him the way to saying yes to that deal. I wonder who it is. God I hope it isn't Creed.

Well there is no creed anymore. After stapp left, the remaining members formed the band Alter Bridge with lead singer Myles Kennedy.

Evil never dies.

I really can only see it being Fuel, so I am at a loss. The band is supposedly a household name so I am not sure they would even qualify. I will just have to tune in later and see. I hope it is something good. He wasn't my favorite, but I really liked Chris and would support him easily.

kind of surprising idol would let him do that. unless they are on the same label already. or does fuel not have a record deal and going to be signed along with Chris' restrictive deal?

Dr. Henry Jones, Jr. 05-11-06 12:31 PM

oh, and fuel is definitely NOT a household name

das Monkey 05-11-06 12:34 PM

Fuel's a pretty big name. Unless you're over 40 or just really out of the loop, you should know their name, even if you don't know any of their songs or even their genre.

I LOVE Fuel, and I love Chris. This will be very interesting.

DVD Josh 05-11-06 12:49 PM

I can't wait to hear Chris fronting Fuel. However, Brett was a strong part of the songwritting of that band. Some of the websites about Chris stated that one of the reasons he didn't progress in Rockstar was his lack of songwriting skills.

Confirmed it is fuel:

Breaking: Band 'Fuel' Offers American Idol's Chris Daughtry a Gig

By Cris Bergman
May 11, 2006
The mystery is over. The rock band Fuel has been revealed to be the band that wants to hire Chris Daughtry as their new frontman. It's a tough decision by Chris but appears to be a good fit.

TMZ has the report:

In an EXCLUSIVE interview, the multi-platinum rock band Fuel comes to Extra and to say they want American Idol’s eliminated Chris Daughtry!

Fuel bass player Jeff Abercrombie and songwriter/guitarist Carl Bell came straight to Extra’s Idol Correspondent Terri Seymour with the offer of a lifetime... they want Chris.

The band has been searching for a new lead singer and definitely took notice of Chris’ rendition of their hit “Hemorrhage” March 1st on Idol. “Chris, if you’re watching,” Bell says, “we’ve talked about this before, if you wanna entertain it again, we’ll entertain it again and go!”

How’d the idea get hatched? Extra Senior Executive Producer Lisa Gregorisch-Dempsey played the matchmaker. “It came to me last night as I watched Chris get voted off,” she says, “the wife of Fuel’s bass player works for Extra so I know the guys in the band well. It seemed like a perfect fit!”

As for Elvis, Bell says no worries. “Chris, you won’t have to do any Elvis songs if you come to Fuel bro- they’re no more! You won’t have to do that.”

***

No word yet as to an answer from Chris but even tough he was voted off last night - he's already the big winner this season on American Idol with this offer.

I'm not dissapointed at all with Chris getting voted off. I'm a big fan/supporter of his and always thought that AI wasn't right for him. He's going on to bigger and better things. Good for him, he deserves it.

Elliot on the other hand will win big with his Halloween album. I'm always expecting Elliot to say "My Precious" every time he grasps the microphone. Really I don't know what freaks me out worse, his Mankee, British toothed smile or the camera showing his family all the time. His Aunt Fester is really freakin' me out!!

Gray Charles will get all my votes from now on, I don't care how much camel toe Kat shows.

This might be the most offensive post in the history of this forum ;)

onebyone 05-11-06 04:26 PM

I hope Chris has enough sense to take that offer. It would be a perfect fit for him and them. When the next AI starts up, interest in anyone but the top 2 will all but die, so he needs to strike while the iron is hot. That's a super deal for him.

That was just my opinion.

I think maybe AI should change the voting format. Instead of voting for the best talent we should be voting for the worst talent every week. That may not work either, but that the only thing that could limit the vote-aholics.

Is there anyway to limit voting to one call per Idol per phone line?
