The producers of the show, on their podcast, said that this was deliberate -- that they wanted the characters to start returning to their habits and behaviors as we saw last season, and see how they play off each other now. They also said that no, Tim Daly is not the "Previously on Lost..." voice. :)

I'm sure it's been given before, but can you give me a link to their podcast?

Aah. That makes sense, thanks.

The others could have pumped info from their prisoners and they would be up to date as much as the group from the plane.

Looks like a match to me (except for the unknown 2nd symbol).

He says "to cause to die" means "to kill."

I’m not seeing “to cause to die”, I’m seeing “Swd caus die”. What language? Where did that phrase book come from?

And as far as the pictures go, the first one and the bird are straight from Egyptian hieroglyphs, the folded cloth (long upside down U) being an “s” sound, and the bird (an Egyptian vulture) being an “a” sound. The 3rd and 5th symbols, I have no idea, though they are not Linear A or Linear B for what it’s worth.

It seems like it did before it got reset.

It expired, but the numbers were typed in before whatever message was supposed to come up actually came up (it was one symbol short).

I won’t say that Sayid is a crappy torturer because, after all, he apparently does get the information he seeks when given the time. He would have gotten the information eventually but was stopped by Jack. And I agree, the guy was an Other. Just the way he looked at Sayid, and the way he looked at Danielle when he was first freed. Speaking of which, why would he run towards Danielle to get away? That's what let her shoot him.

Anyway, back to Sayid, do a search on “waterboarding” (may be “water boarding”), an interrogation technique used by US intelligence in the middle east today. You pull a cloth over the person’s face then pour water onto the cloth – that’s all. Gives the person the illusion that they’re drowning and invokes a response to, well, not drown.

mdc3000 02-17-06 09:23 AM

Loved the episode. Sayid has been sorely missing any major screentime for the last few eps so was really glad to have him back in fine form. Jack is starting to piss me off big time, but other than that, the major characters aren't getting to me like they are some of you.

Loved the clock countdown bit...and to those who say "there is no grace period, it's 108min"...What? Do you write the show? The writers can do whatever they want...108:00 is about the same as 108:15...still 108min... the symbols were SWEET and an interesting twist, quit your whining and enjoy the show. Didn't mean to rant, but all the chatter about this being "wrong" or a "copout" has been pissing me off. Can't wait for the next new episode.

All Sayid had to do was ask who the President is. That is unless they have communication with the outside world.

Unless they are refining thier own oil to provide gas for thier powerboat, they probably have contact with the world

True. They said it has to be reset every 108 minutes. Well there are 59 seconds before it gets to 109. Which means a 59 second grace period.

...or other bunkers on the island are as well stocked as we're led to believe. If they have jugs of ranch dressing, I'm guessing they have a few barrells of gasoline.

Although your theory of sustained contact is interesting, and would explain the existence of the new washer and dryer set. :)

That's interesting becuase in my world, time starts from 0. 1 minute = 60 seconds. 59 seconds < 1 minute. 6480 seconds = 108 minutes exactly. If you have 108 minutes, you have 108 minutes. Not sometime before the 109th minute has been completed. I guess every other timed event in the world is wrong, such as sporting events, deadlines, etc.

It was a tease and a cop out. But, now they've set the precedent that there's slightly more than 108 minutes, although no one knows what that is before whatever the "incident" will recur, assuming anything even happens.

And you seem to be the only person bent out of shape over it. I'd be more upset over the fact that Hurley's ranch dressing can evidently be ok at room temperature after being opened. That's some magic fuckin' dressing.

What bothered me more was .... he didn't seem to care. At least he read the label.

Tommy Ceez 02-17-06 10:42 AM

Just like a gas tank that shows empty while theres still gas in it, you could have a 110 minute counter that shows 108 minutes...just to make sure people enter it with time to spare.

Hell, if I had to have someone push a button every 5 minutes or the world would end...I would tell them they had to push it every 3

I'm not bent out of shape about it. I just felt it was pointless. I'd rather he have made it with 1 second left than be teased like that. But I just don't agree with 108 being basically the same thing as 108:59. That's all.

That's a fine point. Just doesn't seem to fit in with the apparent significance of the numbers as the show has led me to believe this entire time. Hopefully we'll see a little more of that "negative time" countdown before the season is over or some explaination as to why the time limit is "more of a guideline, really".

The countdown is 108 but when it gets into the last 4 minutes, the clock no longer flip per minute, instead, flip per second. So, when the seconds are counted down to ZERO, your 108 minutes is over. Who the fuck has an alarm clock, a timer, and any preset time devices to give grace period after the time they set it to?

Rogue588 02-17-06 11:22 AM

Who said there was a grace period? IIRC, I distinctly remember hearing machinery start moving until Locke put the numbers in..

Now, if you want to talk about how he was able to stop whatever process was in the midst of being started by entering the magic numbers, well, that's another whole can of beans..

a can of beans that are also fine at room temperature for a long period of time... ;)

Reeeeaaaaalllllly? I didn't catch that and I don't recall that being brought up yet. At least that would explain a grace period of sorts. If there was some machine cycling up, it did so when the counter reached zero. That's something.

Now, why the computer allowed the numbers to be put in after that time and subsequently cycled this machine down is another debate, you're right. Anyone else catch a power-up cycle?

I didn;t realize Dharma was a buddhist principle or something along those lines, but I thought this was interesting...

Welcome to About Dharma
Everyone wants to be happy and no one wants to suffer, but very few people understand the real causes of happiness and suffering. We tend to look for happiness outside ourself, thinking that if we had the right house, the right car, the right job, and the right friends we would be truly happy. We spend almost all our time adjusting the external world, trying to make it conform to our wishes. All our life we have tried to surround ourself with people and things that make us feel comfortable, secure, or stimulated, yet still we have not found pure and lasting happiness.
It is time we sought happiness from a different source. Happiness is a state of mind, so the real source of happiness must lie within the mind, not in external conditions. If our mind is pure and peaceful we shall be happy, regardless of our external circumstances, but if it is impure and unpeaceful we can never be truly happy, no matter how hard we try to change our external conditions. We could change our home or our partner countless times, but until we change our restless, discontented mind we shall never find true happiness.

Dharma" means "protection". By practising Buddha's teachings we protect ourself from suffering and problems. All the problems we experience during daily life originate in ignorance, and the method for eliminating ignorance is to practise Dharma.

Practising Dharma is the supreme method for improving the quality of our human life. The quality of life depends not upon external development or material progress, but upon the inner development of peace and happiness. For example, in the past many Buddhists lived in poor and underdeveloped countries, but they were able to find pure, lasting happiness by practising what Buddha had taught.

If we integrate Buddha's teachings into our daily life, we will be able to solve all our inner problems and attain a truly peaceful mind. Without inner peace, outer peace is impossible. If we first establish peace within our minds by training in spiritual paths, outer peace will come naturally; but if we do not, world peace will never be achieved, no matter how many people campaign for it.

The concept of Dharma is from Hinduism. It eventually found its way into Buddhism along with Karma and other key concepts of the Hindu religion. The definition of the term you have provided is a simple version, but good enough for the scope of this show I guess.
