Advice for good sci-fi TV shows to watch
Hey,
I never really got into sci-fi shows until recently a buddy of mine convinced me to give Firefly a try. I was hesitant, but I ended up loving it. Soon after I gave Battlestar Galactica (the new one) a shot and love it too.
Since I finished Firefly and am caught up on Battlestar Galactica, I am looking for some more sci fi shows to look into that somebody who loves Firefly and Battlestar Galactica might like. Any recomendations I'll put on my queue on Netflix and give it a shot.
Thanks everybody!

Farscape (takes til the latter half of season 1 to realize its greatness, one of the greatest villains ever in any genre)
Babylon 5 (watch til the end of season 1 and you won't be able to stop)
Deep Space Nine (first two season are lackluster, but season 3-7 is a match for the best non-star trek scifi...also one of the greatest villains ever).
Futurama (cartoon,comedy,very funny)
Dr Who (2005) (I've never enjoyed the older Dr Who episodes nearly as much as I enjoyed the current incarnation of the show...I think it should be airing on the scifi channel soon).
Invader Zim (okay okay getting less away from the realm of real scifi...cartoon...it does have aliens in it, however
One thing to keep in mind is that most of the shows that will be mentioned in this thread require a committment to long involved story arcs and not all of the shows will find their footing fully within the first season the way firefly did. The best ones also transcend their genre and you aren't really watching them because they're scifi but because the story and characters would be entrancing no matter what the setting really.
I love Firefly also so I hope you find another longer lived series to pick up and enjoy as well.
Also, while I recently caught up on the new Battlestar Galactica and find it enjoying enough to continue watching, I think the above series are all much better and, most of the time, I find the plots in BSG pretty cliched from other series...I wouldn't personally own it in my collection but I do own the above series (except DS9, haven't been able to afford it yet;/)

Stargate SG1 - the US military discover a Stargate that can take them to any planet and they visit various aliens, some good, some bad and they try to get alien technology to help defend the Earth. the first season picks off where the original movie left off...
____________________________
Farscape - A Pilot gets sucked into a wormhole and finds himself lost on the other side of the universe and teams up with a group of aliens on the run from the evil "peacemakers". very well written sci fi series, kind of an updated take on Buck Rogers with crazy aliens and lots of humor.
____________________________
Doctor Who (2005) - An alien called "The Doctor" is the last of the time lords and his time / space machine can take him to any planet and any time. Great british sci fi time travel show. The original series of Doctor Who ran for 26 years with 8 different Doctors and over 700 episodes and after 15 years off the air it's back, It already aired in the UK last year but we finally get it on TV here in America and it starts airing on Sci Fi Channel this March. It won best drama, best actor and best actress at the british version of the emmys.
____________________________
Stargate and Farscape both have on-going storylines and I really suggest starting at the beginning of those series and not jumping into it at a random episode. The new Doctor Who is a continuation of the old series (not a remake or a redo) but the new series is writen so if you are new to the show, you can start at the new series and not have to know anything about the old stuff.

I watched the Babylon 5 pilot "The Gathering" (I've actually had it on my netflix queue over the last week) recently and while I didn't care for it all that much I want to hold out and see the show past season 1.

kd0105:
While 'The Gathering' contains several important series plot points, it is NOT reflective of the series as a whole...there are some cast changes by the beginning of season 1 which takes place a year AFTER 'The Gathering'...the sets and effects are more polished. Keep in mind that it may seem that the first few episodes of season 1 are more 'standalone' action sci-fi pieces....it's important to note going into this show that EVERYTHING has significance to the overall story...whether it's to the plot or something that affects character motivations later on..it's not a show you should give up on based on the first half of the season as there are definitely a few stinkers in there...by the season finale, it should keep you hooked.
In Babylon 5, there are always significant changes that occur every year that take things in a new direction...even the voiceover during the opening credits suggests this.
Also, I forgot to mention 'Red Dwarf' on my original list; I see someone else mentioned it so I just wanted to 'second' it also as a great comedy britcom.

Since everyone is posting the "obvious" shows I'd like to submit a different one.
the 4400
It's a newer show and doesn't have the cult following/huge fan base the other "big" shows have but it is pretty addictive and has its own thing going compared to what's out there.
FWIW, it is a cross between the X-files and X-men. Not totally original when you think of it that way, but it is unique in how everything plays out.

Cowboy Bebop = Best Show Ever.
Unfortunately since it is an anime show people will just dismiss it because it is a 'cartoon'.

Farscape and Babylon 5 are definite must-see-TV. You'll probably like both of them. (Give them both a while to get going... especially B5 which basically takes the entire first season to lay the groundwork and start running.)
Buffy and Angel are also fantastic, and you'll likely enjoy them if Firefly was up your alley. (More light horror/fantasy than 'sci-fi'... but well worth checking out.)

4400 Season Two DVD is being worked on.
http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=4530
The first season was short. 2 hour premiere + 4 x 1 hour episodes. It was intended as a miniseries.
It can be had for under $14 at many places. Not a big $$$ comitment to discover if you like the show.

There were one or two good episodes (and a promising cliffhanger ending), but based on what we've seen so far, I have trouble recommending it. I am, however, looking forward to seeing if Season 3 corrects the general 'lack of direction' issues I see with this storyline.
