American Idol -- The Auditions Thread

This show is back and they are starting with the Chicago audition tomorrow night.

Patman 01-16-06 09:28 PM

2 frikkin' hours! Fox will milk the AI cow for all its worth. If Fox would air AI all 10 hours/week in prime time, they would.

... and we would all watch it. :(

Charlie Goose 01-17-06 09:15 AM

These initial auditions kind of bore me after one episode. Too many people who are obviously trying out as a goof. I like it better when they get into the group auditions and start whittling down the numbers.

kenage 01-17-06 05:08 PM

They only allow the very bad or very good thru to the second stage at the audition sites. Some just good enough ones also get thru to Simon and the gang, but only the really bad or really good get onto the show.

tommyp007 01-17-06 06:31 PM

Indeed. One sure fire way to get infront of the judges would be to be horrible. "That's good TV" yuk.

JimmySRU 01-17-06 07:19 PM

well so far everyone pretty much sucks

I believe season 3 started with two hours on Monday, Tuesday, AND Wednesday of its debut week. Now THAT was overkill.

Puzznic 01-17-06 09:47 PM

I hate American Idol but i watch the auditions every year. The self dillusion of the people that suck can make for great TV.

Heat 01-17-06 11:50 PM

That was an interesting show. That Ukranian girl was an interesting performer, half expected her to start stripping.

Is Wednesday's show a one or two hour show? Don't want to miss Lost...

Charlie Goose 01-17-06 11:55 PM

I didn't see anyone who really stood out so far, although 15 seconds worth of singing is hard to judge in most cases.

Funniest one tonight was the guy from NYC dressed as the Statue of Liberty. He even held the torch in one upraised arm. He tried to sing (natch) "New York, New York" but Simon cut him off after two words. This poor sap couldn't believe he was being thrown out so quickly.

WTF was with Paula & Randy letting that last psycho go through to the next round?

I got the impression that Randy did it just to piss off Simon, expecting Paula to say no. I don't know why Paula said yes. It almost makes me feel bad for some of the people who were actually pretty decent but didn't get through.

It's an one hour show to be followed by the exciting debut of Todd Bridges figure skating.;)

LorenzoL 01-18-06 12:40 AM

The funniest/disturbing thing for me was the Paris Hilton wannabe and her mom. And did anybody understood what she was trying to say???

Jadzia 01-18-06 01:16 AM

That girl's suntan reminded me of the dead naked chick from Goldfinger.
She looked like she had been spray-painted with gold paint.

This one was a disappointment. The crazies weren't out in full force and Simon didn't even have much to say. The only good one tonight was the Self Tanned Britney Spears and they did a good job editing the Lady Marmalade bit at the end.

Rockmjd23 01-18-06 01:23 AM

As long as there are hotties like Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood competing, I'll check it out.

Yeah, that was my take on it. I think Paula felt sorry for the guy. Either that or she was interested to see how far he would go in an actual performance and not just an audition. His eyelids were freaky!

The girl who wore the "Catfight" shirt and sang in the band, she was cute and had a good voice. I don't remember her name.

mndtrp 01-18-06 08:21 AM

I didn't see anyone particularly wonderful, although I missed most of the first hour. Statue of Liberty, Baked Potato and Freakout Boy were pretty amusing. I'm hoping that Randy and Paula can have differing opinions once in a while, that would be nice.

Previews showed a guy dressed up as a GWAR character. Did they show him yet? I kind of wanted to see that dude.

StuddThunders 01-18-06 08:42 AM

The fake-n-bake tan girl was weird. What was wrong with her voice? It sounded like she drank a lot of whole milk and had a bubble in her throat or something. I'm glad the crazy dude went on to the next round. I hope he goes all the way. I want him to win. I want him to sing "Rock and Roll McDonald's" at the finale.

Groucho 01-18-06 08:47 AM

The "Lady Marmalade" montage was a bit confusing, as it showed tan girl, but wearing a completely different outfit than at her audition.

taa455 01-18-06 09:03 AM

What about the guy who kept singing "I shot the sheriff" over and over... and... over.

They let him keep going just to see how long he could keep it up.

Sweet Baby James 01-18-06 09:14 AM

One thing that I did notice was that Paula seemed reasonably lucid. Maybe she dried up during the off-season.:)

I noticed that too. That was wierd.

You have to remember that the show's producers/crew/staff AID in the dillusion... those people that genuinely suck but may think they are actually good are bolstered by the multiple audition process they pass through to get in front of Simon, Randy and Paula. That panel doesn't see EVERYONE, the producers pre-audition people multiple times before that final "audition". So after being told by like 5 people that your audition is great and you're going to see Simon, Randy and Paula - you're actually only going in there because you suck so bad that they want to see how you take being shot down (hopefully badly enough that they can get some yucks out of your footage for these shows).

The Baumer 01-18-06 09:28 AM

i'm so glad this awesome show is on and not crappy shows like Arrested Development :johnwoo: FOX

didn't notice the outfit, but the montage was damn funny. The Paris Hilton wannabe part was excrutiating - Randy and Paula's facial expressions were hysterical.

hyperacitve boy was just out there - I can't believe Randy and Paula said 'Yes' to him.

Which probably explains the different clothing on the racoon. I'm sure they tape the "pre" auditions as well, and may even dictate the song the performers sing.

Actually a couple of the losers were in there, and none of them had sung that song in their audition. I almost think that they called them back in in at a later date to perform that song for the cameras just to have a 'funny montage'. I bet the judges weren't even in the room when it happened, and they just edited in reactions from other auditions.

Jadzia 01-18-06 10:00 AM

I laughed that the one guy sang that song from Trading Places. (the one about Constance)

Randy obviously recognized it but did not know from where, and the guy didn't clue him in.

You should probably be saying
:johnwoo: American tv viewing public

It's not *entirely* Fox's fault that millions upon millions of viewers turn out for one and not then other.

I watch both, so I don't have to feel guilty about anything. ;)

Tommy Ceez 01-18-06 10:04 AM

Yeah, Im sick of FOX taking shit for keeping Arrested Development on for 2 more years than its ratings deserved.

Snowmaker 01-18-06 10:21 AM

The sheriff deputy singing the same chorus over and over and over and over and over .....

Anyone have that clip?

xx2000xx 01-18-06 11:12 AM

All the people go in front of the producers first before they see any of the judges the day before. Then they pick out the best and the worst and send them through to the next day to be judged. That is why she was on twice with different outfits.

I'm just wondering if they picked the final 12 yet. Because like other years, most, if not all the people with the backstory (like lost :-) got into the final 12. Fox likes to pimp a few people early so we get attached to them, yet this must not be a strong group this year as the blonde chick with the dad in jail to the bald rocker dude wasn't that impressive in the previews. Tonight we had 3 backstories I think. The two sisters were ok, but the crooner won't make it that far. The "catfight" chick from the band was the best and will probably make it far.

grim_tales 01-18-06 11:54 AM

Sorry for jumping in here - but recently I caught a repeat showing of the 1/2 final and Final of American Idol 4 (I think?) on ITV in the UK. I have to say that, IMO these people blew our UK X factor/Pop Idol contestants out of the water (certainly vocally). :) I liked the exuberant Bo Bice, even though he didnt win that season, and as for when he sang his song one week on stage with no band/music.. whoa! :)

The only problem I had was that I wasn't familliar with most of the songs the finalists (Bo Bice and Carrie Underwood) were singing.

Joeboo835 01-18-06 12:23 PM

I swear on my kids life, for a minute I thought hte fake bake girl was Ashley Simpson. I honestly did.

How did the two sisters BARELY make it through? I thought they were really good and the one was cute as hell (nice rack).

So far, I thought the best was the twins who sang to paula (held her hand). They shoudl just go do their own thing as a duet (i'd never buy that type of music, but i thought they sang well).

El Scorcho 01-18-06 12:25 PM

I used to watch this show for the initial auditions. Now I'm horribly bored with them. I'll start watching when the field gets narrowed down in a few weeks.

Tommy Ceez 01-18-06 12:47 PM

Someone should post a chart with the most auditioned songs, and how many people tried them.

Anyone else think that AI has totally moved away from the Gospel Booming R&B sound, ...there was nothing duller than the '3 Diva's' phaze of the show, and there trying to downplay those auditions and pump the other acts

Groucho 01-18-06 12:55 PM

Considering that last year's finalists were a country act, and a southern blues act, that's probably a good move.

Gil Jawetz 01-18-06 12:59 PM

These auditions are funny, but it's dangerous. If we get stuck falling for a George Huff type and end up having to watch the damn show to see how he does I'll be very upset!

StuddThunders 01-18-06 01:50 PM

There was that one kid who came with his grandmother who looked and acted like a Rachel Dratch impression on SNL. I felt bad for him. Poor kid.

Oh, well. He knew what he was getting in to.

How about those hot sisters?
