my first thought as well. nothing like having no money to keep a roof over your head but having money to make up a boatload of dumbass shirts.

maybe if you rearrange the order when they stand the message will read "a family member got on AI and all I got was this lousy t-shirt"

Although...if they KNEW she was good, the $250 was well worth the extra boost in votes she's gonna get now that the shirt stunt allowed her to basically say on TV that she's one step from homeless.

I saw all of last season (had to download it) of X-Factor and really loved it. I think the rules are more interesting and the show is less cheesy than Idol. I also think the personal vinettes are better, a little more 'heart-tugging' than goofball like Idol.

I don't know if she'll get a boost in votes because she cried poverty. We live in a cynical world. For every sympathy vote she gets, there will be two others saying, "Quit chasing pipe dreams and get a job!" :)

GAY RIGHTS GROUP: 'AMERICAN IDOL IS HOMOPHOBIC'

SIMON COWELL

Bosses at America's leading gay rights group are demanding a summit meeting with the producers of TV talent show AMERICAN IDOL after claiming the programme is "increasingly homophobic".

Officials at the Gay And Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) were appalled by homophobic remarks made by judges SIMON COWELL and RANDY JACKSON on the first show of the new season, which aired in America on Tuesday (17JAN06).

On the programme, Brit Cowell told one effeminate wannabe to "shave off your beard and wear a dress," while Jackson asked another audition hopeful, "Are you a girl?" Both contestants were rejected.

Now GLAAD bosses are fighting back, demanding an audience with Idol bosses.

A spokesman tells entertainment news website TMZ.com, "GLAAD is reaching out to the show's producers to discuss our concerns and the concerns of community members and allies, who have contacted us about this matter."

Let me guess...AI tells glaad to fuck off

Charlie Goose 01-21-06 06:59 AM

Does GLAAD realize that Clay Aiken finished second in S2? In AI's defense, it was difficult to tell if that Zachary kid was a girl or boy. It had more to do with his clothing and hairstyle than it did with his effeminate manner.

GuessWho 01-21-06 07:55 AM

The girl I sit next to at work is best friends with the Assyrian from episode 1 who wore the native costume and sang in Assyrian.

SMB-IL 01-21-06 10:14 AM

Re: GLAAD: I didn't think Randy's question or reaction after he got the answer to Zachary (boy? girl?) was homophobic -- it didn't have that snickering thing behind it and without the name, it WAS hard to tell.

Cowell, on the other hand, ALWAYS comes off as homophobic to me -- most of it comes out when he's interacting with Ryan -- it's always there, just under the surface, like he's looking for it to make sure nobody thinks HE'S gay. (And really, Simon, no one cares.) As far as his comment about the boy shaving off his beard and wearing a dress -- that sort of thing may fly in England, but it came off to me as more rude than homophobic and since there isn't an antidefamation organization for rudeness, GLAAD will do just fine!

xx2000xx 01-24-06 08:07 PM

Finally it looks like this world is going to have another famous Paris.

Time to shut down the competition, Paris Bennet will win for sure.

big whoppa 01-24-06 08:09 PM

I didn't get a chance to watch much of it last week, but tonight's episode is very entertaining. The delusioned ones are funny. The guy flirting with Paula was hilarious too.

dadaluholla 01-24-06 08:20 PM

That 17 year old girl who did the Billie Holiday song was probably one of the best I've ever heard on here. I hope she goes far.
:)

The song selection didn't help any either. Losing more respect for GLAAD everytime I hear about them...

big whoppa 01-24-06 08:40 PM

If they had an effeminate man who can actually sing then they would actually have a case. That certainly would make an interesting AI.

JacksModernLife 01-24-06 08:47 PM

I liked the single mom who got a kiss from simon, the woman who was raised in 42 diff foster homes, the girl who lives with her grandpa, and the girl who has that famous family lineage.

Also...why must all the gay people be so embarrassing? Even though I don't have anything to deal with them...it's still just embarrassing for me...

I also don't think Simon likes the effeminate guys...

I REALLY liked RHONETTA...haha she made my day...HAHA...the pantie shots...HAHAHAHAHA

FantasticVSDoom 01-24-06 08:49 PM

Is Rhonetta ever going to shut her annoying ass mouth??

big whoppa 01-24-06 08:51 PM

They gave her way more air time than she deserved. First, a girl that looked like a stripper and another who looks like a cheap whore.

It would have been great if she got hit by a car at the end there.

Those four are gonna make me watch this damn show. I knew it! Dammit.

The grandpa girl was about the sweetest person I've ever seen in my life. She broke my heart. And her voice was good without lots of annoying flourishes and runs.

The kiss woman had a spectacular voice and a magnetic personality.

The foster home single mom had a really good voice, was beautiful, and had a great personality, plus her story was another heartbreaker.

And the grand-daughter of the Sounds of Blackness singer just about knocked my socks off. Her first song was good but the Billie Holliday song was unreal. I want a recording of that right now.

Haha I was the same! I was all ready to not care about anyone (and not watch on top of that), since I was crushed last season (with Vonzell losing), but then, here come these four magnificant women. Oh well, at least it'll be a fun ride! :)

I've never watched a season of American Idol, but if this girl gets on I'm in for the ride. She was amazing. Not just her voice, but she actually seems to have an understanding of the amost lost art of singing & phrasing. Not just over-emoting. And her reaction to being chosen just sealed the deal. Can't wait to see more of her.

Heat 01-24-06 10:07 PM

Did anybody catch what Paula said to the guy she was dancing with as she went back to him, right before Randy and Simon voted? Something like "don't (?)"

And I liked Pickly, the blond girl whose mother dumped her when she was two and whose father is in prison ("I want to call my grandmother and write to my dad!")

Agreed. I wonder why she's even bothering with AI. With a voice like hers and with her family connections, I would think that she could get a recording deal without having to waste her time on AI.:)

gnradd21 01-24-06 10:56 PM

I think Simon should've saved the "You're better suited for The Jerry Springer Show" comment for Ho-netta. That skank was embarrassing and I hope she never lives it down. The only career she can look forward to based on that outfit and attitude is offering handjobs in back alleys at 3am. Divine Brown and Lil' Kim have more class.

I thought the guy who brought in the dummy was good enough to make it though. They've definitely sent through worse already. I guess he didn't have either the "hip" image, flashy personality, or traumatic past that's saved a couple adequate singers. Soldier guy who danced with Paula, I'm looking at you. :D

I don't feel like looking it up, but does anybody know how many more weeks there are of auditions? They've been pretty fun so far, but I'm ready for them to get to Hollywood. Hopefully by mid February at least.

That is the ultimate testament to the power of this show...her G-mother COULD have made a few calls and got her work BUT she knows that AI is an instant ticket to worldwide superstardom, even if you finish 4th

hahn 01-25-06 12:01 AM

Yeah, I felt bad for the dummy guy. I think he was actually good enough to make it through, but he shouldn't have relied on props. Has ANYONE with props ever made it through?? Don't these folks ever watch the show? You'd think they'd learn.

Paris is definitely the one to watch. She's so much better than every other contestant it's almost painfully unfair. I can't believe she was so shocked at getting through. By the way, anyone know the name of that Billie Holiday song? I want to hear the original and see if Billie herself was that good. Seriously.

mndtrp 01-25-06 12:15 AM

I didn't see much of this episode, but I did catch a cute-looking Rainbow Brite when they had the loudmouthed girl blabbing away. I, too, was hoping that she would get hit by a car on the way out.

Groucho 01-25-06 12:18 AM

Paris Bennett (sang "Take 5" by Billie Holiday) is my early favorite to win this whole thing.

No way...nice voice, but not easy enough on the eye, without an outstanding personality

Ruben: no personality, not easy on the eyes. Fantasia: not particularly easy on the eyes.

hahn 01-25-06 01:06 AM

I don't think she was particularly ugly. She has the kind of voice where you kinda just don't care what she looks like.

Here's a link to her audition: http://www.rickey.org/blog/american_...paris_bennett/

Actually, thinking back on it, Lisa Tucker was pretty damn good to with her rendition of Whitney Houston's "One Moment in Time". Didn't think anyone could come close to the vocal range of Whitney, but damn, the girl was only 16 and already 95% of the way there. If you delete out Paris's name from the above address, that site has clips from many of the better auditions.

SMB-IL 01-25-06 06:28 AM

Kellie Pickler (the blond girl with the grandfather and the father in prison) is the one to watch! Well, unless they don't want to pimp another Carrie Underwood type because she's VERY Carrie Underwood, but still watching her....

StuddThunders 01-25-06 06:40 AM

Pickler was good. I think she has a good attitude. Same with Paris Bennett.

I'm glad the effeminate dude with the wicked underbite made it through. He seemed to have a good sense of humor, rolling along with the clothing jokes. I want him and the guy who talks to the animals to team up.

I have to admit, the tall muscley guy who sang the Rascal Flatts song had me worried. When he said he was doing a Rascal Flatts song, I said, "Send him home right now!" But he did all right despite the choice of song.

LorenzoL 01-25-06 07:33 AM

I was blown away by Paris audition like everybody else. There's no way that she can be left off out of the final 12 (regardless whether people think that she's pretty or not).

potvin48 01-25-06 08:24 AM

Like I said before, those people who get the extra video of their home life are going to be the top 12. At least the majority of them will be.

Charlie Goose 01-25-06 08:32 AM

Paris was definitely the best audition I've heard since Ruben. She was amazing, and didn't fall into the same trap as many many other singers who do ridiculous vocal gymnastics rather than just sing. She has to make the top 12. If she doesn't, then America sucks.

The chubby, squeaky-voiced girl with the oddly thin nose who said that she wanted it "more than a whole bag of gummy bears" looked like something out of a Tod Browning movie.

The big guy who brought in the red carpet and shook his booty was definitely doing it for a gag rather than a legit audition.

I would've sent the soldier guy who danced with Paula away. His voice was only okay, and he annoyed me. Kind of obnoxious.

Yea, she was awesome, shows a lot of versatility to do a modern country pop song and then a soul/jazz standard. She has to work on her look though.
